Fishing on the Mozhaisk Reservoir
The reservoir is located in the west of the Moscow region in the Mozhaisk district, about 100 km from the capital.
This is one of the largest reservoirs in the Moscow region. It was formed in 1962, during the construction of a hydroelectric complex on the Moscow River, above the city of Mozhaisk, near the small village of Marfin Brod. The length of the reservoir is approximately 47 km, the width is about 3.5 km, the maximum depth of the reservoir is 22.5 m. The Mozhaisk reservoir has an area of 30.7 km². Opposite the village of Staroe Selo is Gorokhovsky Island. Fishing on the Mozhaisk Reservoir
is carried out throughout the year, and winter fishing is not inferior to summer fishing in popularity. The reservoir has a different bottom topography with frequent changes in depth. Most of the bays of the reservoir belong to the bed of the Moscow River. They were formed as a result of the flooding of a large number of ravines. The bottom here is mostly snaggy and in this place there are numerous fish sites.
The right bank of the reservoir is mostly steep and is excellent for fishing for pike perch and large bream using a float rod, donka, spinning rod or feeder. Pike are caught here mainly in circles. You can fish here both from a boat and from the shore. More than 30 species of various fish live in the Mozhaisk Reservoir, but the following species predominate: pike perch, roach, asp, bream, silver bream and peled, carp and burbot, pike and tench, perch and eel, bleak, ruff. Almost all types of fish inhabiting the reservoir live in the area of the dam.
In autumn and winter, the reservoir is good for catching burbot, and in the summer, fishermen catch eels using baits and bottoms using worms. Large crucian carp and carp are also found. As for the asp, on this reservoir it grows to real trophy sizes and specimens weighing 5-7 kg are not uncommon for fishermen on the reservoir. Small asp are distributed in large numbers throughout the reservoir. On average, the catches are dominated by individuals weighing 1.5-2.5 kg. Fishing in
the Mozhaisk Reservoir for asp
is carried out throughout its entire water area. Dace and chub are often found in the upper reaches of the Iskona and Moskva rivers. Roaches are found everywhere.
The food supply of this reservoir is very rich and the fish in the Mozhaisk reservoir are quite capricious. And in order to catch, for example, bream, you have to feed the place with one bloodworm. And the roach bites well if the hook is baited with a sandwich consisting of bloodworms and burdock larvae. The bream caught here is large and fat, measuring 35-40 cm. According to experienced fishermen, the fat content of Mozhaisk bream is much higher than the fat content of, for example, bream from the Klyazma or Istrinsky reservoirs. This is due to the fact that the food supply here is richer, especially the reservoir abounds in large bloodworms. However, this abundance is what makes the local bream so capricious. Such rivers as Koloch and Lusyanka also flow into the Mozhaisk reservoir. There are all the species of fish that live in the reservoir itself, with the exception of pike perch, eel and asp.

History and features of the reservoir
The reservoir is located near the highway of the same name in the west of Moscow, just a hundred kilometers from the capital. This is a huge body of water, man-made; people often call it the sea. The reservoir was created during the construction of the Mozhaisk hydroelectric station in the early sixties. Water from it flows into the Moscow River.
The reservoir, with an area of more than thirty square kilometers, stretches like a caterpillar about fifty kilometers long, up to three and a half kilometers wide, and up to forty meters deep. On the territory of the lake near the abandoned village of Goroshkovo there is Gorokhovsky Island with sandy shores, suitable for spending the night with tents.
The banks of the reservoir are generally flat, but there are also steep places overgrown with tall grass and reeds. In the last century, the reservoir was navigable, but in recent years, like other Moscow reservoirs, it serves exclusively to provide the capital with fresh water. Freeze-up occurs in November, ice drift - in April.
