Inexpensive passenger trailers for transporting boats: single-axle, double-axle

Boat trailers are designed to transport a boat or boat to the body of water where it is intended to be used. A small boat can easily fit in the trunk or roof of a car, but transporting a larger, heavier boat will definitely require a boat trailer. There are a large number of different boat trailers on the market, which differ in carrying capacity, dimensions, number of axles, presence or absence of a braking system and many other parameters. In our article we will talk about how to choose a trailer for a boat, what technical characteristics and parameters you should pay special attention to when choosing, and we will provide a list of the 20 best boat trailers in terms of price-quality ratio.

Maximum dimensions of the transported boat and trailer load capacity

The length of the boat and its weight must correspond to the size and loading capacity of the boat trailer. When calculating the load capacity of a trailer, in addition to the weight of the boat itself, you should take into account the weight of the boat motor, the weight of fuel, and the weight of other cargo transported with the boat. Overloading the trailer during operation can lead to serious damage.

Frame

The frame of a boat trailer is most often made of a special profile pipe. Welds must be made of very high quality so that they do not burst during use of the trailer. Boat trailer frames are zinc coated to prevent corrosion. The longer the trailer frame, the greater directional stability it has while driving. The lower the trailer frame is installed relative to the ground level, the lower the vessel's landing. The low landing of the vessel makes the process of launching the vessel on and rising from the water more convenient; in addition, the lower landing of the vessel ensures a low center of gravity and maximum stability of the trailer while driving. Eyelets are installed around the perimeter of the trailer frame to secure the vessel and the protective awning.

Winch

Boat trailers are equipped with a manual winch, which is designed to lower the vessel into the water and lift it from the water onto the trailer. The winch is installed on a bracket. The bracket can be adjusted longitudinally relative to the trailer drawbar, adjusting to the length of the vessel; in addition, in many boat trailers the winch bracket is adjustable in height and tilt. The length of the winch halyard must be at least 1 meter longer than the trailer frame.

How to transport a boat?

Almost every fisherman and hunter has an inflatable boat in their arsenal. This swimming device is also the main attribute of people who are ardent supporters of active recreation on the water.

An inflatable boat is a floating structure that makes it possible to walk on the surface of the water over short distances. There are a huge number of types of this watercraft. The main ones are rowing, motor and RIB boats. It should be noted that today one of the popular materials for their manufacture is polyvinyl chloride (PVC), which has a number of advantages over other materials:

  • strength;
  • PVC layers provide the boat with tightness and protection from ultraviolet radiation, flammable materials and salt water;
  • resistance to aggressive environments;
  • does not rot, mold, does not wear off;
  • little weight;
  • compactness.

Suspension

Many boat trailers are equipped with a suspension that allows you to adjust the distance from the center of the tow ball to the trailer axle. This type of suspension is called “moving wheel travel”; it allows you to correctly distribute the load between the trailer wheels and the car’s towbar. The maximum load on the towbar must be indicated in the passports for the towbar and trailer. By shifting the axle, it is achieved such a position in which the load on the coupling device was within the limits required by the manufacturer of the trailer and vehicle (towbar). The maximum load on the towbar is usually no less than 40 kg and no more than 125 kg. The suspension of a boat trailer can be rubber-harness or spring-shock absorber. Most trailers are equipped with spring-shock absorber suspension. This type of suspension provides the trailer with a soft ride and good directional stability. Springs that are too soft make the trailer prone to strong skidding, while springs that are too hard reduce the smoothness of its ride. The number of leaves in the springs may vary; many trailers have three-leaf springs.

Cradles or rollers

There are two types of support structures for securing a boat to a boat trailer: cradles and roller supports.

  • Cradles
    are long supports made of wood or aluminum, covered with carpet or covered with plastic pads. Trailers with lodges are well suited for fairly steep descents into the water, where it is possible to drive the trailer into the water to partially submerge the vessel. The weight of the vessel should be evenly distributed between the supports. The cradle is adjustable in three planes: width, height and inclination. The length of the supports must correspond to the length of the vessel. The transom of the boat should be flush with the rear end of the cradle. The cradle on the left side should be adjusted so that it is a mirror image of the cradle on the right side. The vessel must be secured with straps.
  • Roller jacks
    consist of support rollers that support the hull of the boat on the trailer. Roller trailers are suitable for both steep slopes and gentler ones, as they allow the boat to be submerged into the water from a much shallower depth of the trailer. Roller supports are well suited for loading heavy boats and boats. Elastic rollers do not leave marks and do not damage the hull of the vessel. The rollers are located on the trailer drawbar; there are keel and side rollers. The transom of the vessel is located on the rear reinforced roller support, which has the largest number of rollers. The side roller supports on the left side of the trailer should be positioned mirror the supports on the right side. The vessel must be secured with straps.

Some boat and boat manufacturers explicitly specify which support structures on the trailer should be used to transport the vessel.

Number of axes

Boat trailers vary in the number of axles into: single axle, two axle and three axle trailers.

  • Single axle trailers are the most common type of trailer. They are used to transport boats and boats up to 6 meters long and weighing up to 1.5 tons.
  • Two-axle trailers are used to transport heavier and larger boats and boats. Biaxial boat trailers transport vessels up to 8 meters long and weighing up to 2.5 tons.
  • Tri-axle trailers are quite rare and are used to transport the largest and heaviest vessels. Three-axle boat trailers can transport boats and boats up to 8.5 meters long and weighing up to 3 tons.

Increasing the number of trailer axles leads to less demands on the precise alignment of the loaded boat.

Transporting a boat: methods of transporting PVC boats, examples

Good day to all! It is gradually getting warmer, and therefore soon it will be possible to go fishing. This is where I got the idea to talk about such a topic as transporting a PVC boat.

This is the most common option for fishing, since PVC boats are lightweight, relatively easy to transport and inexpensive. You can work with them with your own hands, without the help of your friends. I loaded it myself, went fishing, enjoyed nature, and unloaded my huge catch at home with my own hands. But that depends on your luck.

But you can transport boats in different ways. Which one to choose is up to you. I just suggest getting acquainted with the basic methods that may be useful to you in the future.

Registration of a trailer with the traffic police

Boat trailers require registration with the traffic police. You must register the purchased trailer within 5 days after purchase. When registering a trailer with the traffic police, you must submit the following set of documents:

  • Owner's passport
  • Trailer passport or design safety certificate
  • For rare trailers, for which the traffic police may not have a valid VTTS (vehicle type approval), you should provide it, certified by the manufacturer’s seal
  • A document that confirms ownership, such as a sales contract
  • Receipt or check confirming payment of the state duty
  • For trailers weighing less than 3.5 tons, individuals do not need to undergo technical inspection

After providing all the necessary documents, the traffic police will register it and issue individual license plates.

Rules for transporting a boat trailer

Passenger car trailers are divided into two categories:

  • O1 - trailers with a total weight of up to 750 kg, for their operation a category “B” license is sufficient
  • O2 - trailers with a gross weight of up to 3500 kg, for their operation it is mandatory to have an open category “E” to “B”

Drivers with less than two years of experience are prohibited from transporting any trailer. When driving on highways, the speed of a car with a trailer should not exceed 90 km/h; on other categories of roads, the speed of a car with a trailer should not exceed 70 km/h. When driving at night, in poor visibility conditions, or when driving in tunnels, the trailer's lights must be turned on. The weight of the boat being transported must not exceed the maximum permissible weight established by the manufacturer of this trailer.

Summary

Experts are inclined to the following conclusion: how to transport an inflatable boat in the inner trunk and on the roof of a car is not the best option! The trunk is not an optimal method of transportation, suitable only for the most compact versions of inflatable boats, which can be easily deflated and inflated. In addition, you will have to take into account a number of technical conditions, which will be discussed below.

IMPORTANT! To avoid the load shifting and falling, you will have to strictly adhere to the speed limit of 50 km/h. In addition, the boat must be tightly secured, tied to the trunk in several places at once: along the bow and along the stern.

Tips for driving a car with a trailer

When driving a car with a trailer, to ensure safe movement, you should follow a number of rules:

  • Before you start driving with a trailer, you should make sure that the boat or boat is securely fastened and will not fall off the trailer while moving. The vessel is secured to the trailer's eyes using a special flat-section elastic cable. The boat can be covered with an awning or cover to prevent it from being damaged by pebbles, branches of trees and bushes. While driving, at stops you should regularly check the reliability of fastening the boat to the trailer, the condition of the coupling head, and the correct installation of the safety chain.
  • When driving a car with a trailer, it is impossible to use the interior rear view mirror, and the side rear view mirrors do not provide sufficient visibility; these points should be taken into account when driving.
  • When driving a vehicle with a trailer, obey the speed limit. Excessive speed is the main cause of road accidents involving vehicles with trailers in most cases. Reduce speed when turning corners, in bad weather conditions, or on uneven roads.
  • The driver of a vehicle with a trailer requires more distance when performing maneuvers. Overtaking should be completed at a greater distance from the vehicle in front. You should avoid emergency maneuvers and maintain a calm driving style.
  • When making sharp turns, you must correctly calculate the trajectory of the trailer. On boat trailers, due to their large wheelbase, the wheels do not always follow the rear track of the vehicle.
  • Boat trailers have a large side windage; when the terrain surrounding the road changes, for example, when entering an open, windy area from a dense forest, the driver must be prepared for the fact that the trailer may sway noticeably.
  • When driving with a trailer, remember that it will take you longer to stop, so you should maintain a distance of 4 seconds from the vehicle in front. Note the time when the car in front of you passes a roadside pole, stop or crack in the road; if your car reaches this object in less than 4 seconds, you need to reduce your speed. When driving in bad weather conditions, increase the distance to 5 seconds.
  • When driving on hilly terrain, shift to a lower gear to prevent jerking, reduce fuel consumption and heat the engine. Reduce your speed before starting a descent to prevent the trailer from swaying. When driving a trailer with a coaster brake system, you should not downshift when going down a grade because this may activate the brake system and damage the brakes. When going down a slope, do not press the brake pedal constantly; as soon as the speed has decreased by 10 km/h, release the pedal and allow the brakes to cool.
  • Cross winds, the driver making maneuvers too quickly, improper weight distribution on the trailer, or too high a speed can cause the trailer to sway. Using the brakes or performing maneuvers while the trailer is swaying may cause you to lose control of the vehicle and cause the vehicle and trailer to jackknife. When the trailer sways, release the gas pedal, never try to equalize the trailer's sway by accelerating, do not brake, do not turn the steering wheel, try to move as straight as possible.
  • When driving the trailer backwards, keep your hands on the lower part of the steering wheel. To move the trailer to the left, turn the steering wheel to the left; to move the trailer to the right, turn the steering wheel to the right. If the trailer and vehicle begin to fold when moving backwards, or if the trailer is moving in the wrong direction, stop, drive forward a little, and try again. Reversing is best done with an assistant.

Lovebirds: proper transportation of a boat on a trailer

The luxury of a permanent berth at a yacht club is not available to everyone, so transporting a watercraft from home to their favorite water area and back is an inevitable procedure for the vast majority of Russian motorboaters. And if so, then in addition to the boat itself, its constant companion - the trailer - comes into play.

There is no point in talking for a long time about the dangers of carelessly installing a boat on a trailer - just look at the photographs below. However, even if you don’t go to extremes, there is always the possibility of scratching the bottom, damaging the cylinders (important for PVC boats) or bending the sides while moving.

In order to avoid accidents and misunderstandings on the road, when loading, you need to adhere to the basic and, in fact, the only rule - the boat must lie with the entire plane of the bottom on the trailer. Moreover, regardless of its type, be it a trailer with lodgements (carriages) or rollers. In the first case, it is necessary to ensure that there are no gaps between the supports and the bottom; in the second, make sure that the keel fits exactly between the keel rollers, and the side rollers reliably support the sides on the left and right. To do this, even before the first trip, you will most likely need to manually fit and adjust the trailer’s retaining components to a specific body.

The boat is pulled onto the trailer using a standard winch until the front part fits tightly into the bow stop. It is important to remember here that the tension from the winch itself does not guarantee complete immobility, since it can only keep the craft from moving in the forward-backward direction. Meanwhile, any bump or sharp maneuver significantly increases the likelihood of the front end sliding to the side or bouncing up, after which, when braking, the inertial force can carry the boat towards the car.

The trailer is single-axle, without a brake system, designed for transporting jet skis and boats up to 5 meters long and weighing up to 600 kg. The profile frame of the trailer is hot-dip galvanized. The frame has a curved design and ensures the lowest possible landing of the vessel, lowers the center of gravity and increases the stability of the trailer while driving. The trailer is equipped with multi-leaf spring suspension with hydraulic shock absorbers. Wheels with R13 tires. The trailer is equipped with a manual winch, a multi-adjustable bow stop, movable cradle with adjustable tilt angles, and fastening loops for reliable fixation of the vessel. The length of the trailer is 5.2 meters, width 1.89 meters, height 0.63 meters. Trailer weight 150 kg.

Main methods of transportation

The owner of a PVC boat may have at his disposal an excellent trailer Vodnik 8213 B5, or a similar Vodnik 8213 A5. Someone actually bought themselves an MZSA 817701, and couldn’t be happier. There are quite a lot of examples of high-quality and reliable trailers.

But are they suitable for transporting a boat? I think that you can find a way out of any situation. Even if there is a motor on the boat.

As practice shows, transporting inflatable boats on a trailer or by other methods is much easier than transporting large boats. Yes, there is a special trailer for a boat, but it is expensive, and the water transport itself is heavy. This requires additional equipment, a powerful winch, and sometimes the help of 1-2 people.

If the task is to transport a rubber boat, you won’t even always need a trailer.

There is another convenient mount, in which only your car will participate. I'm talking about the fact that you can literally transport a PVC boat on a Niva.

But let's take a closer look at the methods. Personally, I see several optimal methods of transportation:

  • on a regular flatbed trailer;
  • on transom wheels;
  • on flatbed trailers;
  • on boat trailers;
  • on the roof;
  • in the trunk.

Now what do we do? That's right, let's look at each option separately. This will allow you to understand which method is right for you, as well as what is required to implement your plan.

Flatbed trailers

The option is the most common, since in most cases the presence of a person with a towed vehicle means flatbed trailers.

Even if you need to transport a PVC boat with a motor, you can find a convenient solution. Moreover, the most convenient option here is to use a slipway with supports. This is a special device that is used as an insert.

The slipway is easily fixed on the sides and does not require drilling the trailer. Some people use homemade slipways, although I would advise you to think twice before assembling such a structure with your own hands. Watch the video to see how this is done and what it looks like. For a PVC plastic boat, it is enough to buy an inexpensive slipway with good supports. The boat is thrown onto them, secured with additional devices, and that’s it.

I also advise you to look at all the sharp corners and protruding metal elements. If they pose a potential threat to the integrity of the trailer during loading, unloading or transport, it is better to cover them with soft materials.

But usually the cradle prevents the boat from contacting the sides, which makes transportation much easier.

Flatbed trailer

Another option is flatbed trailers. These are flat surfaces without sides, which can be useful when transporting various things and cargo, including water transport.

Since PVC boats have a flat bottom, they can be placed directly on the platform, secured with straps. But here it is important that the platform and the boat match in width, otherwise there is a risk of contact with the wheels while moving. Also, the same slipway is installed on the platform in case of discrepancy in size.

A convenient and practical option that usually does not require additional manipulations. Loading and unloading is quick and assistance is often not required.

Boat trailers

If you are an avid fisherman, or you often use the boat for other purposes, it makes sense to purchase a special trailer for the car.

Such designs are adapted for specific tasks, have special fastening systems and additional equipment.

There are two main points here. Firstly, the trailer is definitely designed for transporting water transport, and therefore everything you need comes from the factory. There is no need to do any alterations or modifications.

But there is also a second thing. Such vehicles are limited almost only by the ability to transport boats. They cannot be used for other purposes.

Transom wheels

Transportation on transom wheels is an interesting and convenient method for such tasks. Here you will need to buy special wheels for your PVC boat. They are quick-release, so they are used only when needed.

This method is relevant for situations where water transport needs to be delivered to bodies of water in the absence of a normal access route for a regular trailer. The compact quick-release trolley helps out in difficult situations, taking up minimal space.

Today, transom wheels are mass-produced by leading manufacturers. Although many are quite good at making them with their own hands.

But it is important to understand that driving on transoms along the highway is unlikely to be possible. This is a solution for short trips. Therefore, most likely, some kind of trailer will still be needed.

Car roof

There are car owners who literally transport a watercraft on the roof of their car. But this is not entirely the right decision.

You will need some modification in the form of installing a roof rack. This protects the surface of the car roof from damage, scratches and other troubles. The trunk also strengthens the structure and allows you to transport a large number of things. Therefore, you will not be limited only by the ability to transport your boat.

Moreover, among all the variety of designs of this type, I would single out the expeditionary racks, which I have already told you about. You can read and study the main advantages of such solutions. Today on Avito you can buy used luggage racks, or fork out the cash and get a new design from a trusted manufacturer.

The only inconvenience is the loading and unloading process itself. If you are short and the machine is of impressive height, then there will be problems with these manipulations. But you can save a lot and not buy a trailer. Now decide for yourself.

Trunk

This is an extreme case, since a boat will not fit into the trunk of even the largest car. It needs to be deflated, and then inflated again on the spot.

Constant air bleeds can negatively affect the condition of the craft. Plus, in the trunk there is always a risk of accidentally touching the boat and damaging it in some way. And not every deflated boat will fit into the luggage compartment, which should also not be forgotten.

From this it follows that the trunk is not the best option. It is only suitable for small inflatable boats that are easy to deflate and inflate. You will also need enough free space inside the car to place other things.
