Having sailed under the bridge, along which the road laid along the canal passes from one bank to the other, the ship goes to the Varvarovskoye reservoir.On the banks there are two buildings, under which the retractable doors of the repair and barrier gates are hidden in niches. If necessary, they can close in the riverbed, separating the entire Volga slope from the watershed. This is convenient in case of repairs when you need to temporarily dry an area.
Meanwhile, the channel bed is expanding, reaching 200 meters in places. Here the route crosses the former bed of the steppe river Chervlenaya many times. This channel was straightened and dams were erected in places. In some places concrete spillway trays are visible.
After we have sailed along the canal route for more than 30 kilometers, the ship comes out to the Varvarovskoye reservoir, which supplies water to the entire Volga slope. From here the descent to the Don, to the Tsimlyansk Sea begins.
On the Volga slope, the path of water and ships is the same - through the locks. On the Don slope, these paths are different in certain areas: water flows away from the locks through feeder canals and reservoirs.
From the Tsimlyansk Sea, a powerful pumping station supplies water up behind the dam of the Karpov Reservoir. From here it goes through a special supply channel, bypassing two locks, to the second pumping station. It pumps it even higher, to the Bereslavskoye Reservoir. Finally, the third pumping station lifts water into the watershed Varvarovskoye reservoir, along which we are now sailing.
To our right is an expanse of water. The distance to the shore is one and a half to two kilometers. The huge dam of the Varvarovsky hydroelectric complex, which stretches in a straight line on the horizon, is getting closer.
The ship goes to the tenth lock. It stands at the beginning of a short section of the shipping canal connecting the Varvarovskoye reservoir with the Bereslavsky. Ahead on the left you can see the village of workers of the Varvarovsky hydroelectric complex with a young orchard. On the shore of the reservoir there is a monument in honor of the heroes of the defense of Tsaritsyn. On the right, on the embankment near the gateway, there are bronze busts of the heroes of the civil war - N. A. Rudnev, F. A. Artem (Sergeev), A. Ya. Parkhomenko.
On the wall of the left tower at the upper gate of the lock, golden letters read:
“Here in August - September 1918, on the approaches to Tsaritsyn, the heroic regiments of the Red Army with selfless courage crushed the interventionists and White Guards.
V.I. Lenin and I.V. Stalin highly appreciated the valor of the revolutionary troops of the Tsaritsyn Front.”
On the memorial plaque of the right tower is an excerpt from a telegram from V.I. Lenin and I.V. Stalin to front commander K.E. Voroshilov with fraternal greetings to the troops of the Tsaritsyn Front.
Until now, the ship approached the locks from the downstream side and rose with the water. Now we are approaching from the upper pool and we have to descend from the watershed into the canal, which has the same level as the Bereslavsky reservoir.
To the right of the lock, a pumping station is visible above the dam.
The waters of the Varvarovskoye reservoir were used to power the new irrigation system. A gravity canal branching off from the highway is almost 40 kilometers long. Along it, water flows to the fields of the Khrushchev and Red Partisan collective farms, and irrigates the lands of the Volgo-Don state farm.

Greetings brothers in arms. Yesterday, Nikolai Polukhin and Borisych visited the Varvarovskoye Reservoir, in the area of dachas. The object of fishing was perch. I am writing the report today, because yesterday we returned very tired, and I decided to postpone writing until today.
We arrived at the reservoir, as usual, at dawn, and immediately onto the ice. My friends fled to their old places, but I went to look for and explore new places. Having previously prepared the points and entered them into the navigator, where, in my opinion, the perch can stand.
