The Kuban is one of the largest rivers in southern Russia with a large number of tributaries suitable for fishing. Not only local fishing enthusiasts come to these places to fish, but also tourists. They are attracted by the availability of fishing and the variety of prey.
Peculiarities
Kuban begins in the mountainous regions of Karachay-Cherkessia, from there it goes through the Stavropol Territory. The length of the river is approximately 900 km, in the southern part of the Russian Federation it is the longest and deepest river. There are many fishing spots where you can fish all year round. In different parts of the Kuban reservoir, the Kuban has varying degrees of transparency: depending on the type of soil, in some areas it is crystal clear, in others it is cloudy. However, even in muddy waters the fish feels quite comfortable, easily adapts and actively reproduces.
At the point where the river flows into the sea, a wide delta has formed. This area is distinguished by a wide variety of fish species; many of them have successfully taken root in both fresh and salt water. The deep Kuban reservoir abounds in fry and plankton, so the fish here never go hungry and often reach quite large sizes. The efficiency of fishing depends on many different factors:
- chosen place for fishing;
- bait and bait used;
- fishing skills;
- and of course, fishing luck.
You can fish in the waters of the Kuban all year round. This river periodically overflows and fills other small reservoirs. Some of them are covered with a dense layer of ice in the winter, while others do not freeze even in the coldest season.
Mouth and delta of the Kuban River
Cossack Erik
In close proximity to the Sea of Azov, where the Kuban River flows, a vast swampy delta is formed.
Now, flowing into the sea, the river forms three main branches:
- “Petrushkin Sleeve” is the main one (115 km), replenishes the Temryuk Bay of the Sea of Azov.
- The channel, the right navigable branch, separates near the village of Achuevo, 111 km from the mouth. Half of all Kuban water flows through the Protoka into the Sea of Azov.
- The Cossack Erik (left branch) through the Peresyp branch enters the Bolshoi Akhtanizovsky Estuary, and from there into the Sea of Azov.
Previously, the Kuban could flow into the Black Sea. This fact is evidenced by a lake in the river’s floodplain, which was once its left branch and flowed into the largest Kiziltash estuary in the south, adjacent to the Black Sea.
What kind of fish can you catch?
Kuban attracts all fishing enthusiasts with a wide variety of representatives of its ichthyofauna. Among the most common aquatic inhabitants that can be caught in this water area are several varieties of fish.
- Perch is one of the most common and well-recognized predatory fish that can be caught in many rivers, lakes and ponds. The Kuban River was no exception.
- Walleye is a desirable catch for most anglers. This is a fairly strong fish, which can offer serious resistance when fished. To catch this predator, you need strong gear and good fishing skills.
- Pike - this toothy predator is a sought-after catch, which is caught in the Kuban waters all year round.
- Bream - this fish can be caught in the deltas of the Kuban. Most often it is caught together with pike perch.
- Catfish are inhabitants of bottom layers. A strong and powerful fish, you need the strongest gear to catch it. In the Kuban waters there are catfish of different sizes, so equipment with bait is selected in accordance with the expected weight of the fish.
- Chub - the largest specimens can be caught in the upper reaches of the Kuban. Many professional fishermen go in search of this particular prey.
- Mullet - this type of fish is most often found in the seas, but some varieties can be caught in the Kuban rivers. Mullet meat has exceptional taste and nutritional characteristics. It is highly prized, but it takes a lot of effort to catch this fish. It is best to look for it in quiet channels and bays.
- Asp is a rather tasty fish, and in Kuban you can catch quite large, truly trophy specimens. However, it is not easy to fish them out due to the natural timidity and caution of this aquatic inhabitant. To get a good catch, you will need certain fishing skills and, of course, powerful equipment.
- Ide is one of the largest representatives of cyprinids. You can catch it throughout the entire water area of the Kuban.
- Chekhon - in Kuban this fish is not caught all year round. She swims in these waters in the second half of spring and early autumn; these days there is a great chance of catching a truly weighty specimen.
- Shemaya is one of the most popular varieties of fish found in the Kuban; it is highly valued for its juicy and nutritious meat. To catch fish, the simplest float rods are most often used.
- Carp - this fish can be caught mainly in the lower reaches of the Kuban. Some individuals grow to very heavy sizes.
- Crucian carp - this fish is ubiquitous throughout the entire water area; it is mainly caught in places overgrown with vegetation. In Kuban, it is not uncommon to catch individuals weighing up to 1–1.5 kg.

Fishing on the Kuban River
The Kuban River attracts a huge number of fishermen, both local and visitors. This is due to the fact that the river flows through the most picturesque places of the Krasnodar region. In addition, it is rich in fish, which cannot leave any fisherman indifferent. Having gone fishing in these places, you can be sure that you will hardly be able to return home without a trophy specimen of pike or catfish. Conditions allow you to fish in these places at any time of the year.
Fishing for catfish
Catfish is a fish that is found in the Kuban River, and in sufficient quantities. The dream of every fisherman is to catch this river monster, despite the fact that this is not true and easy, if this applies to a large catfish. It is possible to catch catfish here, both from a boat and from the shore. The main thing is to find a promising place with great depth.
Catfish are a nocturnal predator and are best caught after dark. If you use a boat and a quok, you can count on catching this predator in the daytime. The fact is that the sounds of the quok attract the predator and it rises from the bottom, heading to the place where these sounds come from.
When going for catfish, it is better to take an assistant with you, especially if fishing is done from a boat. It is difficult for one person, when biting a large specimen, to cope with this river giant. He is capable of turning the boat over or breaking the gear, especially since someone else needs to steer the boat.
Fishing on the Kuban River
The Kuban River delta includes:
- Her sleeves.
- Some bodies of water with running water.
- Some bodies of water have standing water.
What kind of fish are there?
There is a sufficient amount of various fish in the river. For example:
- Pike.
- Som.
- Carp.
- Mullet.
- Perch.
- Chub.
- Asp.
- Zander.
- Carp.
- Rudd.
- Bream.
- Silver carp.
- Crucian carp.
- Roach, etc.
Fishing gear on the Kuban River
The main fishing gear on the Kuban River are:
- Spinning.
- Float rod.
- Leash.
- Feeder.
When going fishing, you should take care of spare equipment, because there are often snags here. Having hooked the tackle, from time to time it is quite difficult to unhook it, so you have to break it off. Therefore, having spare leashes with hooks is a must.
Features of Kuban fishing
Fishing in the upper reaches of the river
The Kuban River flows into the Sea of Azov and a large delta has formed in this place, which creates all the conditions for the life of various species of fish. The upper reaches of the river are distinguished by clear and ideal clean water.
The river has a fairly fast current in some places, which creates ideal conditions for the life of Caucasian chubs and barbels. To catch a chub, you need to have reliable tackle, since carp are characterized by great resistance when fishing. A spinning rod can cope with this task, but to catch a barbel, you will have to arm yourself with a donkey. If you use a regular float rod, then with a certain skill you can catch any fish.
Flat areas
In such areas where the current is not significant, the main representatives of the cyprinid family, such as carp, carp, bream and roach, live. Moreover, some of them grow to impressive sizes. This factor is the main one that influences the attractiveness of these places. In bays where there is practically no current, you can count on catching quite large crucian carp. Unfortunately, these places are characterized by the presence of coastal vegetation, which greatly complicates the fishing process.
River fish
Kuban, flowing into the Sea of Azov, formed a large delta, with favorable conditions for the habitat of many varieties of fish. Some fish adapted to living in the sea, while others went to fresh waters. Thanks to the mild climate and the diversity of zooplankton, fish grow very well here and also spawn.
Upper river
In the upper reaches of the river, the water is clean, transparent and fast flowing. Its main inhabitants are the Caucasian chub and barbel. The chub is a strong fish that lives near the sources. To catch chub, spinning rods or fly fishing methods are used. And barbel can only be caught using bottom gear.
In the flat part of the river
After descending from the mountains, on the flat part of the river, a family of carp appears:
- Bream,
- roach,
- carp,
- carp.
Bream is a large fish and is very popular among fishing enthusiasts. In river bays where there is no current, crucian carp live, hiding in nondescript coastal places.
A quiet and calm habitat has a beneficial effect on this fish, and it reaches a kilogram weight. But due to the high and dense thickets of the bay, it is difficult to catch it.
Let's talk separately about the carp, which has a decent size. They catch it using the makushanka method, although the most avid fishermen prefer it with a feeder or carp fishing gear.
Fishing on the Kuban River

Fishing on the Kuban River in the upper reaches
Features of this section of the river:
- ideal purity of water and, as a result, its transparency to the bottom;
- predominantly high-velocity currents.
The most attractive catch for fishermen is Caucasian barbel and chub. In open water, chubs are often caught using spinning rods, fly fishing, and barbel – with donks of various designs. Considering the power of the prey, strong gear is used.
Spinning baits - small spinners, small-depth or surface wobblers; The color varies, but large catches produce dark, almost black colors. In fly fishing, they use flies that imitate local insects that fall to the surface of the reservoir and are eaten by chubs.
In the upper reaches of the Kuban, when the water is clear, float gear is popular: fly and match fishing rods. Baits - dough, maggots, worms, insects living along the banks. The catch includes roach, perch, and bleak. Bream and white bream are often found in suitable areas. Fishing spots are calm backwaters, calm water off the coast.
In winter, fishing in the upper reaches of the Kuban is problematic due to the harsh conditions and the unpredictability of the river and its tributaries. In areas not covered with ice they hunt chub and perch with a spinning rod. In places where the water is reliably covered with ice, they fish with jigs and vertical lures. The catches include perch, roach, barbel, and pike.
Fishing in the flat part of the Kuban River
The river is home to most of the carp fish (carp, bream, carp, roach). Among them there are specimens of impressive size - an important factor influencing the attractiveness of places for fishermen and vacationers.
Crucian carp are hunted in bays, which in summer are overgrown with dense coastal vegetation, which makes the process of catching decent specimens difficult without a boat. The latter is convenient for trouble-free fishing of promising places.
The flat Kuban has a low flow rate. It is visited by many spinning anglers who are not left without prey, where pike and perch are present. There are many places suitable for lovers of float gear. Fishermen, using fly rods and match rods, catch bream and bream. Carp lovers prefer to use donks, which are equipped with makushatniks. Many people prefer feeder gear.
Large bream in the lower Kuban is caught in early spring. It also bites in the summer, but the catches are smaller and are represented more by bream. In summer, individuals sometimes respond to plant baits, although they do not refuse animals. The latter become more catchable during cold spells in autumn and early spring.
The arrival of autumn rains encourages fishermen to go to Kuban for tugun, which has tasty and tender meat. If you're lucky, you can come home with a loot worth 10 kg. Although more often the catches include 7…9 kg individuals.
Pike, which bite well in the summer, become more active in the fall and are caught in large quantities, without giving preference to any special baits. Of the latter, silicone ones are the most popular among fishermen.
In winter, fishing begins after the ice freezes. Initially, it appears in areas of bays, straits, and off the coast, gradually moving towards the middle of the channel. In the arsenal of fishermen: girders (there are pike perch, but more often pike are caught); jig tackle, on the jigs of which, to improve catchability, bloodworms, maggots, and worms are attached (perch, roach, and less bream are caught en masse); float gear, used more for catching bream and roach.

Fishing spots
Depending on the specifics of a particular area, fishing on the Kuban River has its own characteristics. In the upper reaches of the river, the water is quite clean, thanks to the melting of the glacier.
And in the flat areas located here it is muddy, which, by the way, does not mean that fishing is inappropriate. The fish adapts well to certain conditions and feels great.
There are fishing bases on the Kuban River. Specially equipped and selected places can significantly save time and not waste it searching for new fishing spots.
So Kuban can be considered an excellent fishing place, or simply a paradise for both fishermen and fauna.
Fishing on the Kuban River. Temryuk area
Temryuk is a wonderful place for those who love fishing and sports recreation. Not far from Temryuk, numerous estuaries and floodplains originate. The estuaries intersect each other with narrow channels and artificially constructed canals.
Fishing in such places is a real pleasure! To sit comfortably on the shore of the estuary, with a fishing rod, is the true embodiment of any fisherman’s dream.
There are many places for fishing in the Temryuk area, these are basically all the reservoirs between the road to Temryuk and the Sea of Azov. The canals in Golubitskaya and in front of the Maly Akhtanizovsky Estuary, in the area of Peresyp, and the Bolshoi Akhtanizovsky Estuary are most in demand.
It is better to fish on canals from the shore, and in estuaries - on the water from a boat.
Here is an incomplete list of the catch that can be caught in the Temryuk area:
- carp,
- crucian carp,
- tench,
- carp,
- rudd,
- roach,
- bream,
- perch
- and pike.
Among fishing enthusiasts there is a very popular base called “Temryuchanka”.
It is located in the delta of the Kuban River, about 13 kilometers from Temryuk. The necessary conditions for relaxation and excellent fishing have been created here!
The Kuban River delta has many tributaries that flow into numerous lakes and water channels with unique fauna and flora.
The variety of fish that lives in the River Delta gives every angler the opportunity to get real pleasure and a lot of impressions from such an activity as fishing!
Most of the reports provided by fishing enthusiasts are positive. Fishermen enthusiastically talk about their trophies and the gear they used in this or that case.
According to their stories, the fishing process itself is quite different from fishing in other regions. For example, the advantage of fishing here is the use of a green worm as bait (you can get it right near the water), which can be used to catch large pike perch, catfish or perch!
In addition, if you choose the right time for fishing, then your catch, even with a simple fishing rod, with any bait, will undoubtedly please you. Pike, perch, crucian carp and rudd - this is an incomplete list of successful fishing in the Kuban.
Lures, techniques and tactics of fishing on the Kuban River
Shemai fishing
Particularly popular in Kuban is the fishing for shemaya, the most valuable carp fish with a mild, pleasant taste, the name of which in Persian is translated as “royal fish.” For fishing, float rods are used, on which mainly animal baits are placed.
Shemaya is a pack breed. It constantly moves around the reservoir, making it difficult to find. But once you find it, you can become the owner of a hefty catch.
The best time for catching shemaya is autumn, when it appears en masse in the waters of the Kuban, rising to spawn from the Sea of Azov. The best places are considered to be riffles and areas with fast water.
Bream fishing on the Kuban River
There are many fishermen who like to catch bream. In Kuban, especially in the flat part, it reaches considerable sizes. It is better to fish from a boat, using a bottom, which is equipped with a sinker that matches the current at the fishing spot. Best places:
- near steep banks;
- areas with a bottom strewn with shells, which bream feed on;
- in holes (can be found by buoys that are installed to mark deep places).
Kuban bream bites all year round. Successful fishing requires:
- pre-feeding the place;
- using special feeders to supply bait;
- varying the flavors of the bait when the intensity of the bite changes;
- silence.
The donkey rig is according to the angler’s preferences. It is advisable to have a powerful rod, as it is possible to catch a large specimen. Accordingly, the fishing line is 0.25...0.30 mm, the leash is approximately 1 meter long from the fishing line 0.16...0.20.
Fishing for sabrefish on the Kuban River
The fish constantly moves around the Kuban, preferring places with strong currents. It is usually found at considerable depths, which excludes bays and river floodplains from its search areas. In the surface layers it can appear only during hot, prolonged weather. In cold weather, sabrefish should be looked for in areas with depths of 14...16 meters.
The species migrates en masse along the river in spring. Stopping places for flocks where saberfish can be found:
- underwater pits;
- areas with shallow depths;
- areas where the bottom has complex terrain.
In summer, fish prefer:
- boundaries between slow- and fast-flowing jets;
- the edges of the pits are the exits and entrances to them.
The saber fish bites well on worms, maggots, and caddis flies. A wasp, a fly, a gadfly “works.” The fish attacks and is caught using wobblers, twisters, and small vibrating tails. There are fishermen who prefer to fish with fry 4 cm long.
Given the mobility of sabrefish, they hunt for it by constantly throwing bait. The latter is supplemented with bait, which is used to catch fish. The best gear is the bottom one. In this case, you need to make sure that the hook with bait does not lie on the bottom.
Catching predatory fish on the Kuban River
Among the Kuban predators are perch, catfish, pike perch, and pike. The fanged fish prefers deeper places and is easily caught using foam rubber. Trophy individuals are found in the lower reaches. In the same place, but in the deep pools, decent catfish are caught.
Whiskered predators live throughout the reservoir in large numbers. Most are caught with donks, on which, as bait, they put live bait (preferably crucian carp), a frog, offal, a green worm (reed), a fried sparrow, and a mole cricket. Gear is thrown from the boat, the shore into the deepest places.
They go out to hunt catfish in the evening (before 18-00) in order to have time to cast gear during daylight hours and wait for the night, when the barbel begins to feed. During the day, fish are caught in boats using the kwok method. The period of greatest activity of the predator is morning, 9…10 o’clock.
If catching catfish is carried out purposefully, then it is better to do it together. This will help cope with prey if a large specimen bites.
In August-September in the Kuban, chub are actively caught using spinning rods. The best baits for it are wobblers and spinners. The right time for hunting is sunny days when there are no gusts of wind. The rod must be strong and reliable. Silence must be maintained during the process.
Free fishing spots in Kuban
Kuban River
Free places in Kuban should be presented from the main river itself, which gave its name to the entire region. Of the 870 km of the total length of this water artery, the majority - 662 km - falls on this edge. The deep-water beauty hides more than 100 species of different fish in its waters.
Some of them are characteristic only for it - the Kuban barbel, fisherman, shimaya, Caucasian chub. The river is home to silver carp, catfish, asp, goby, ram, carp, crucian carp - you can’t list all the fish. Fishing on the Kuban River occurs along the entire channel. However, the best places are in the lower reaches of the river and on the bottom rifts.
The former are rich in predatory fish species - mullet, pike, carp, silver carp and carp. And the latter are famous for fishing with asp, chub, and ide. The most famous for their generosity are the fishing spots on the river “Reset”, “Zamanukha”, and Fedorovsky hydroelectric complex.
Ponura River
One of the most catchy areas of Kuban is considered the Dinskaya district. People come here to fish on the Ponura River. The most fishing places are located near the villages of Novovelichkovskaya and Novotitarovskaya, as well as near the village of Osechki.
Azov estuaries (Yeisky, Akhtanizovsky, Beysugsky, Vostochny, Kirpilsky, Kurchansky)
These unique slightly salted sea bays are rich in the presence of different species of fish due to the mixed waters of the sea and the river. Lovers come here to catch pike perch, ram, rudd, bream, sabrefish, pike, crucian carp, and carp. More experienced fishermen manage to pull out the pelengas, but this is a great success.
Sea fishing in the Azov and Black Seas
Lovers of flounder, horse mackerel, herring, and goby come here. The greatest activity begins at the end of March, when the fish are closer to the shore. To catch herring, they use a spinning rod and a float rod; many people simply catch it with an elastic band. To catch horse mackerel, they use “tyrant” tackle, consisting of a sinker and several artificial flies.
They catch it from a boat. For small flounder that live close to the shore, bottom gear is quite suitable. And larger specimens require the use of serious marine devices, including a reliable watercraft that can be used to move away from the shore. Large specimens are usually found deep.
Stanitsa Novomyshastovskaya
This is a real fishing paradise. Approaching the village from Krasnodar from the eastern side, passing the first entrance, you need to move on. Having reached two gas stations, you need to turn onto Fedorovskaya. Fishing here is especially popular in the fall on rice paddies, when there is a massive release of water. Then in the canals you can catch tens of kilograms of ruffs, auks, perches, catfish and carp.
Kirpili River
The climate is greatly influenced by the nearby Greater Caucasus system, as well as the close presence of the Black and Azov Seas. The river flows along a fairly wide channel and forms a chain of estuaries. The most catchy places are considered to be near the villages of Prirechny, Olkhovsky and in the Timashevsk area. They catch pike on a spinning rod, rudd, perch and other freshwater fish.
Rybnaya River
It was named so for a reason; almost all types of river fish native to this region are found there. From toothy pike to the legendary roach. The most catchy places are considered to be near the villages of Otvazhny, Balkovskaya and Irklievskaya. Of the other rivers, Gendzhirovka (near the village of Zarechny), Beysug (near the village of Zarya and Novomalorossiyskaya station), Chelbass, Kalali, and Eya are considered the most fishing.
Pond between Baku and Martanskaya
A quiet, attractive reservoir that few people know about. However, there is very successful fishing here for carp, crucian carp, and carp.
Dam in the village of Novokorsunskaya
You have to get there by car; the road is gravel and dirt. Bream, carp, carp, crucian carp are caught.
Dam in the village of Dyadkovskaya (Levyy Beysuzhek River)
It is located 13 km from the previous dam. Catfish, pike, pike perch and perch are found here. And among peaceful fish you can catch crucian carp, bream and carp. In general, the most up-to-date information can be found from fishing forums, or best of all from local residents. They know exactly where the good bite is.
Features of fishing on the Kuban River
The main one is the wide variety of fish inhabiting the reservoir. The river is practically unregulated, so aquatic inhabitants do not encounter problems during spawning, which affects their rapid reproduction. This and a good food supply contribute to the rapid growth of fish to trophy sizes. The special feature is fishing with a green worm, which is harvested on site, near the water. Such bait often brings prey in the form of large catfish, pike perch, and perch.
Kuban fishing is not simple and greatly depends on the “mood” of the fish. From the secrets of local anglers:
- the use of float rods only in quiet places, when hunting with a retrieve in areas with medium currents; in other cases, donka is used in all varieties;
- catfish (up to 3 kg) should be looked for under the shore, especially in places where there are flooded bushes; the bait should be placed above the bottom, at half-water;
- determining the probability of a good bite by the turbidity of the water: they lower a stick into the river and if it is visible 10...20 cm deep, then you can catch fish in such a place by chance - they look for a clearer area, for example, nearby canals, lakes, channels.

Headwaters of the river
Three characteristic parts of the river can be distinguished, the fishing in which is similar, and the fish composition is approximately the same. The beginning of the Kuban is located in a mountainous area; the upper waters are dominated by rifts and fast sections of the river, so the most common trophy here is trout, Caucasian chub and barbel. Naturally, there are backwaters and flowing lakes with carp and bream, but this is rather an exception to the rule.
Chub fishing is the main activity in such terrain. The chub is a strong fighter that resists to the last, so you need to prepare for fishing and stock up on a reliable fishing rod and line.
Most often, experienced fishermen use wobblers and spinners on a powerful fishing rod for fishing. The jerks of the chub are quite sharp and strong, so a weak rod can simply break.
The main fishing period begins in mid-August and ends in September. Already at the end of September the catch drops, but if you choose the right place and time, you can still count on a good catch. To do this, you need to choose the right day - warm, windless weather is ideal, and the place - the chub lives on riffles and gullies with uneven surfaces. For bait, worms, maggots and algae balls are used. Naturally, this does not guarantee a catch during the off-season, but it significantly increases the chances of catching.
Fishing for chub and podust on the Kuban River
The most promising fishing for such large fish as chub is fishing with a wobbler or spinner.
The chub is a “fighting” representative of the carp family; it often emerges as the “winner” and gets off the hook. August and September are the best times for chub fishing. Its greatest activity occurs during the day when the sun is shining.
Catching chub requires the ability to accurately cast a spinning rod without disturbing the silence. To prevent the chub from leaving, you need a stronger rod and a stronger spinning rod. And then a successful catch is guaranteed to you!
Podust habitats are mainly rifts, unevenness and gullies made of sand and clay. The greatest bite of this fish is in May and June. The bait can be worms, maggots, rolled algae balls, and bark beetle larvae. Podust are caught using float or bottom gear.
