A special role in spinning fishing is played by raft fishing, when the boat moves independently with the help of the current or wind. The speed then, as a rule, is low, which is why fishing itself is quite convenient and very rational. Since almost all the time is spent only on “clean” catching and weak adjustment of movement. But a considerable area of water is fished in a day. And the fruits are usually appropriate.
Fishing by rafting on the river
Such fishing was very common before, but even today, with the increasing popularity of spinning, it has not lost its importance. It is very relevant if the fish stands sluggishly and does not want to chase an energetically moving bait.
Finding schools of standing predators is certainly not easy - the water area is huge and it is sometimes not always possible to foresee the situation on the reservoir. Consequently, an active search, as a rule, gives better results than a theoretical discussion of the presence of pike perch in a certain place.
Fishing by rafting with a fishing rod
There are two active search methods - trolling and raft fishing, often with jig baits. Still, trolling in a new place that has a complex bottom topography takes time: first you have to study the area, find the optimal passage places, select bait - in a word, there are moments that slow down the search.
As a rule, raft fishing involves vertical trolling while drifting, when you need to test the bottom under a moving boat. Fishing is not very exciting, but it can be very effective, since you can move along the hummocks and hollows with heavy bait. The only problem is where does the wind and current take the boat? It’s great if you come across places where fish suck. And when not? Perhaps the boat is drifting in the center of the channel hole, and the active predator is a few meters away from it near the edge of the dump and simply does not see the bait, or does not want to, and is chasing it?
Finding fish while rafting
I prefer to look for fish a little differently. When fishing with a raft, do not knock on the bottom. And casting fishing with a simple stepped retrieve. This makes it possible to view different levels of the river bottom, for example, the edge, the foot and the slope, where pike perch often stand. Of course, fishing is also made more complete - we cast, control the wiring - everything is as always, but without anchoring the boat, which we do not regret.
Water rafting is an excellent opportunity for fishing
When looking for concentrations of predators, it is possible and even necessary to combine different fishing methods. Fishing by rafting is like a rare comb, but you won’t be able to cover everything. For example, it is better to catch promising pools, as well as snags, with a jig bait. From an established boat, changing several places. There is always the opportunity to catch a fish hidden in a secluded corner, which is waiting for the spinner in the snags. When fishing by rafting or trolling, it is not always possible to put the bait under its nose, since it is difficult to find the predator’s site; you must first “tap” the bottom or study it using an echo sounder. Therefore, when a boat drifts past a bend, I often fish the spit, leaving the pool for later. Relatively straight river sections are the main place for fishing with jig baits during the drift.
Straight sections are the main place for fishing when rafting
In calm periods, and on rivers where there are high banks and when the wind is moderate, the boat moves calmly with the current. Fishing is comfortable and very productive. On the way back you can troll again. It cannot be said that this fishing method is worse or better than raft fishing. Sometimes a predator bites better on a jig bait jumping from the shore and moving downstream, and sometimes on a wobbler moving against the flow; it also often happens that both methods work equally effectively. Fishing from a boat with bait casting is used in almost all bodies of water. When we talk about jig-spinning during raft fishing as a method of searching for the concentration of a predator, it is important to remember that the effectiveness is very dependent on the latitude of the reservoir.

Rafting fishing on narrow rivers and canals is more fun and effective. Where, based on the outline of the banks, you can guess the bottom topography, where you need to cast and how best to place the bait. And when the current is weak and the boat does not move quickly, then one passage is enough for reconnaissance.
On larger bodies of water, jig exploration is also very effective, but there should be more passes. To fully explore a certain chosen area, you need to make at least a couple of swims, sequentially studying each dump. During the period of fishing by rafting along the main Volga, the result can be achieved by casting, rather than knocking, a jig bait on the bottom. If you catch a fish, it’s great, but when you don’t, the conclusion about the absence of fish is very hasty.
Rafting and fishing in Siberia. From Lake Baunt along the Tsipa and Vitim rivers: description
We will cover more than 600 km, overcome 115 powerful rapids, rapid rifts and rapids, following each other. We will finish the route on the Vitim River, at the bridge of the Baikal-Amur Mainline.
The group is accompanied by 2 experienced instructors. We will go on 4- and 6-seater catamarans Raftmaster and Sterkh. We will cross Lake Baunt on motor boats, and row along Tsipa and Vitim - rowing for 5-6 hours a day. We go fishing along the way, and in the evening we will have delicious fish delicacies at our table: fried, smoked, fish baked in foil, lightly salted pike fillet with lemon, pike cutlets, fish soup. We cook food over a fire. All group members participate in cooking with the participation and assistance of instructors. There are also a lot of berries and mushrooms along the route - we will collect them at the stops.
We spend the night in tents for 2-3 people.
Please note that there is no cell phone service on the route, the terrain is wild, and instructors will only have a satellite phone for emergencies.
Baunt is a beautiful lake located in the north of Buryatia in the Bauntovsky Evenki region. The Tsipa River flows from Baunt, which flows slowly for the first 220 km, to the Uya weather station (2-2.5 km/h), and then the most interesting thing begins - Tsipa, squeezed on all sides by ridges, meanders, gaining strength before breaking through the mountains Babants. This section contains as many as 119 obstacles in the form of rapids and shivers - emotions are guaranteed!
In general, the Tsipa rapids are characterized by very large shafts up to 4 meters and barrels. The most serious obstacle is rapids No. 49, where Tsipa loses more than 5 meters of height. After such adventures, we simply need to take a break - just below the cascade, at the mouth of the Tsirik, a good bathhouse and winter hut will await us.
The next 150 km of rafting along the Vitim will also be powerful - the speed of the flow of Siberian rivers allows you to conquer the vast spaces of Transbaikalia, traveling brightly and lively. Despite the route's mileage, the travel schedule is calm - time is provided for rest and fishing.
The alloy can be divided into three sections.
1. Lake Baunt and Nizhnyaya Tsipa to the Uya weather station (250 km, 8 days). The river flows in a basin, the width of the river in some places reaches 250-300 m. The flow speed is 2-3 km/h. There are many lakes and swamps along the shores, but we will always find a parking place. Sometimes there are sections on the river with a high slope, but, in general, it will be calm - there are no obstacles, except for rare short riffles. On this part of the journey we will catch pike: here it reaches incredible sizes and is very tasty because it lives in the purest water. In the river, in addition to pike, you can catch perch, and in the tributaries you can catch lenok and grayling. An excellent opportunity for fishing and training in catamaran control!
2. Tsipa from the Uya weather station to threshold 119 (130 km, 4 days). This is the most interesting and technically most difficult rafting section on the route. Below the mouth of the Talakit, the Tsipa splits into several channels, and soon the valley becomes a deep winding gorge, turning the river into a turbulent torrent. We walk quickly and pass obstacles, and we first examine the most difficult rapids from the shore. The width of the river is 50-100 m, the average speed of the current is 10 km/h, in rapids and rifts it is 18-20 km/h, and in high water on some rapids - up to 30 km/h. In a section of 115 km - from the mouth of the Talakit River to the mouth of the Kadyrin (Kadran) River - 119 rapids, rifts and riffles are concentrated. The length of the rapids and rifts ranges from several tens to several hundred meters! In the most powerful rapids the height of the swells reaches 2.5-3 m, and in high water - 4-5 m.
On this section we will understand that each of the previous 250 kilometers of stretches was not in vain and we will get real pleasure from passing obstacles and riding on the shafts!
3. Tsipa from the Kadyrin River to its confluence with the Vitim River, Vitim from the mouth of Tsipa to the village of Vitim (270 km, 6 days). Below threshold No. 119 Tsipa becomes calmer. Here, at a distance of 140 km, there are 56 natural obstacles scattered: rifts and rifts. If you are lucky with high water, then many of the shifts and riffles will be very powerful - with a high standing shaft. Tsipa flows into Vitim with a calm stream. We will be able to take a breather, stop and admire the beautiful views - for example, the high rocky cliff on the right bank of the Tsipa. Wonderful place! Then everything is more or less calm - we will walk along the section from the mouth of Tsipa to the village of Bambuika - here the Vitim River has no major natural obstacles. Near the village itself, the river emerges from the mountains into the Muya Basin, and below the village a final surprise awaits us - a series of strong registered rifts with a high shaft. The average current speed in the area is 8 km/h.
Take fishing gear with you: spinning rod, a set of spinners, leashes, fishing cords, pliers for pulling out hooks and landing nets. Fishing in Siberia is amazing!
Casting and wiring
When fishing from an anchored boat with a fairly strong current, it is better to alternately use long and small casts in any direction. Then it is possible to fish the maximum covered area from one place, leaving no gaps. When raft fishing, everything is different. It’s better to prepare in advance for the fact that you won’t be able to cover everything. It is important to realize that you need to find pike perch in schools, and not places where they stay compact. They will be the next target.
The purpose of fishing using an alloy
Schools of predators usually consist of several hundred animals in autumn and spring. Of course, such a quantity cannot be accommodated on a “handkerchief”, and the frequency of viewing the water area by casting gear should not be small in order to detect such a school.
When fishing by rafting on a small or medium-sized river, you need to move exactly above the channel depression. If there is no wind, then, as a rule, such movement occurs by itself. After all, the current is strongest above the riverbed, where the boat is pulled. Of course, the wiring speed will then be quite high, but this inconvenience is inevitable. But when casting to each of the banks, the bait will move to depth from the shallows. This is important; there is no other way to avoid snagging on snags and various vegetation. The boat is quickly carried downstream, which threatens to break. Of course, you need to fight for the bait, trying to remove it with jerks of the rod. If it doesn’t work, you can break the fishing line or start the engine and climb to the hooking point, removing the gear, but this is a waste of time.
No need for long casts when rafting. An exception can only be when fishing on wide channels and rivers, including when the current has carried the boat down a steep bank and pulls it along the slope, and course correction gives a very short-term result. There is only one thing left - long casts to catch part of the promising zones in one cast. In general, it is more profitable to use relatively short casts. When the depth is approximately 8-10 m at the fishing site, the bait will be under your control throughout almost the entire span of the retrieve, and you can easily maintain the optimal interval between strikes.
The next important fact is the duration of each transaction. I would like not to delay it unnecessarily. Since it is unknown what awaits you behind the next smooth bend in the river. Suddenly the source of some stream appears there, steep? You can’t assemble thirty meters of cord in an instant, and you may be late in casting to the intended point to set the required trajectory of the bait.
During the period of rafting on a large current, many promising places may remain missed, but upon repeated passage, your chances of success will increase, because the necessary adjustments have already been made to the tackle regarding the weight of the baits.
About fishing in a fast current, read the article: How to fish in a fast current
Repeated passes increase your chances
The boat moves with the flow, the contours of the shore, the bottom topography, as well as the depth of the reservoir under the boat change... Each cast, you need to evaluate the area: where are there more opportunities for a bite? There is only a second or two for this, no more. Since in just a couple of seconds a boat can swim several meters, leaving the unexplored area overboard.
As a rule, the highest bank is fished. Near it there is almost always a steep slope, on which predators often rest. Only when submerged trees or large bushes begin to be found under the shore, will it be possible to make an unscheduled cast in the other direction.
Undoubtedly, there are fish in the snags, and there can be a lot of them in this place, although an attempt to catch them by rafting usually ends with a strong hook. The clutch “screams”, and if three to five jerks did not help to pull the bait from the tree, then you have to clamp the spool so as not to lose all your gear, because if the craft has a tiller control, then you will have to start the engine alone in this situation, most likely you will not work.
In the summer, many fishermen also begin to experience problems with their boat engine due to overheating. Therefore, the coolant must be replaced once a season. The cost of replacing coolant is low.
It is better not to touch the snag for a while, so that then, having anchored, you can fully fish it with jig baits or wobblers, as well as using vertical lures.

In the canyon, the runoff of the Waterfall Threshold is 600 m. There are 40 rapids of 4-5 ks in the canyon. The snag in the “crossing the Kitoi near the Motkin Gol River” node - when the water in the river rises even a little, the category increases significantly - the group is trapped in the cheeks at the crossing! After pr.63 there are several pressures that are simply dangerous to go into deep water! Even more dangerous than the more categorical upper section of Motkiny Cheeks. The section - Shumak - Fedyushkina River is also beautiful and rich in fish - LENOK, TAIMEN. After Motkiny Cheeks the rafting is 150 km fishing and very beautiful.

Needed for the route - Shumak Springs - Shumak-Kitoy rafting - 2 weeks. 5-7 days mountain part and 5-7 rafting. Complete passage of the Shumak River
Ara Oshei - The mountains in the upper reaches of Ara Oshei are very colorful! And you have to stay there! Take a hike into the surrounding labyrinths of the mountains. River 4+ks. There is a waterfall. Rafting 40 km. You can arrange to ride horses onto the river in Khoito Gol. Rafting two three days and Kita - with Motkin Cheeks 5x. For those who are looking for an unusual route and want to see and walk Kitoy. It is even possible for ships to drift higher than the upper canyon and raft along it. This route will be more difficult than pure Kitoy with a car transfer!
Tickets - Essentially a class IV kayak river. Kayakers loved it very much - beautiful waterfalls and canyons. There is no special power. There is Feng Shui. Many rafters go up from Kitoy even with catamarans. For 15 km of rafting along beautiful rapids. In general, the rafting is about 35 km from the very top. This requires several days on catamarans or bubbles.

Zhom-Bolok A unique river in Russia, which flows in a bed of solidified lava! Indescribable park setting on the banks of Zhom-Bolok! There is a certain feeling of being in Jambalga... in Shambhala! The four-kilometer waterfall section is good for rafting. In two rapids 4ks - Touchy, Billiard. Option 3ks. Catapult 5ks. The cascade is short - it’s better to do a rafting camp with us and go through it several times! After the cascade, EVERYONE moves to R. Oka. In general, rafting 5x is the passage of the entire Zhom Bolok - with two blockages - they can be walked, but in general they are more dangerous and more difficult than the rapids! You can combine with Lake Khara Nur, with horseback riding tours, with rafting on the Sayanskaya, Urik and rivers of Tuva. An option for tourists who have visited the rivers of Karelia and Altai.

Plumb fishing using a boat
Nowadays, sheer glitter is very popular. Why? It turns out that everything is extremely simple: if we talk about the relevance of the time spent fishing, then with this method of fishing much less time is used than when fishing with a spinning rod. This fishing is no less effective than spinning fishing, and sometimes even surpasses it. There are two directions - fishing on the river, as well as on the lake or reservoir. If we talk about the seasonality of such fishing on a lake or reservoir, then the fishing is good, from about early spring until approximately the end of June. And the next peak occurs from September until severe frosts. You can fish on the river all season long, even in intense heat. And such flashing with an alloy sometimes gives not a bad result. In the fall, you need to look for fish in the pits; the method of rafting on a boat, gradually fishing the river, gives good results.
Plumb fishing using a boat
What tackle should you choose for trolling from a boat? Fishing rods for vertical trolling, 50 cm or more in length, as well as a spinning rod, but it must be sensitive so that you can feel with your hand when the bait goes down to the bottom. For vertical fishing, it is better to use a simple reel (Neva type) or a multiplier reel; they are much more convenient than inertia-free ones. The rods are equipped with monofilament, which has the lowest stretch and it would not hurt to have fluorescent tones. The thickness of the fishing line depends on the weight of the bait and the fishing depth. Often, a fishing line with a thickness of 0.15 to 0.42 mm is used. You can also use braided fishing line. When using braid, the tackle becomes very sensitive, and when hooking, the fish is caught easier, literally with one movement of the hand.

Several illustrative examples of raft fishing
In particular, you are rafting down the Manguta River. This is a narrow, although very fast-moving river. The steep banks provide good protection from the wind, and therefore it is almost perfectly suitable for alloy jigging. Bites most often occur either on a dump near a high bank or on a riverbed ditch. Accordingly, when searching, it is necessary to alternate casts to the right, and also at the same time downstream, so that the bait falls near the water’s edge, and slightly to the left and up.
In the first episode, after casting, the bait almost immediately “finds” the bottom, then it has to move down the sloping slope. It is necessary that it touches the ground after 2-7 second pauses. It is easier to achieve this by throwing it down the stream. Because at the initial stage of guiding the boat is carried more quickly by the current and catches up with the bait, as a result of this the pauses, which on a steep slope are usually too long, are reduced. The bait has passed the drift and approaches the boat along the flat bottom as the boat at the same speed. However, the duration of the pause remains the same - after all, the distance to the boat has changed, as well as the angle at which the line leaves the “tulip”. At the boat, the pauses increase steeply. We play along two or three times with the tip of the spinning rod, wait for one or two seconds (an extremely effective method against sluggish pike perch, which accompanies the bait, but refrains from attacking), and if there is no bite, we exhaust it.
In another case, it is necessary to do wiring from a slightly shallower to a greater depth. There is a steep drop over which the bait will begin to hover, and due to the fact that you did not modify the bait, throwing upstream is justified. At the initial stage of wiring, we carry out the winding in 1.5-2.5 turns of the coil more energetically, and at the last - short and leisurely. The casting angle is lower or higher upstream depending on the weight of the bait and the desired duration of the pause. Closer to the left bank it is a little shallower - about 1.5 m. It is not customary to look for pike perch there. In fact, there are fewer predators there, although there are some, so on days when trolling boats move along the right bank one after another, you can try to fish the shallow part of the river. It is necessary to cast perpendicular to the current.
In the lower reaches of Enotaevka the picture is different. The channel ditch is small and pressed against the right bank; closer to the left bank there is a wide zone of obvious shallow water, over which the current is noticeably weaker. With a slight wind of any direction, the craft moves on a channel ditch. The distance to the bank dump is 7-12 m. Casting is carried out upstream in order to place the bait in shallow water near the edge. The wiring turns out to be short, which is very good for Enotaevka, since there are enough snags at the bottom. We alternately cast to the right and then to the left. First you need to understand where the pike perch is currently located, as well as where it is the largest.
Fishing by rafting
The weather disrupts plans and prevents new ones from being built. In days of forced fishing downtime, I offer a note from the spring issue of Nizhny Novgorod Fisherman. I hope this reading will be useful for someone. Or at least entertaining, since it is, perhaps, in principle impossible to surprise with anything in our time.
The slow flow of a small river carries a compact inflatable boat. A fisherman in an inflatable. Casting a crank downstream, slowly rotating the reel rotor, a bite, there is! – a handsome roach poses in a landing net in a minute, only to swim away in another minute to heal wounds from sharp hooks...
I consider rafting fishing on the small rivers of the Nizhny Novgorod region one of my favorites. The constant movement of water, changing landscapes, various unexpected encounters with representatives of the animal world - I really, really love all this. And I’ve been practicing for 15 years now, since 2004, when the author of our magazine, Vladislav Andrianov, and I rafted in a few days along the beautiful Uzola from Kovernino to the Volga. And then there were Usta, Vetluga, Kerzhenets, Urga, Piana, Kudma and many, many times Linda. I keep planning to raft along the Seryozha and Tesha, but every time I make a choice in favor of more familiar rivers... maybe this year?
In terms of dynamics, raft fishing has no equal. You can’t “break through” 10 km of a river on foot in a day, and on rivers like the Urga, fishing from the shore in most areas is completely impossible - there are simply no approaches to the water. So boat, boat and more boat.
Watercraft
Kayaks, kayaks and single-oar boats are not very suitable for one reason - the oar is loose. The current constantly changes the position of the angler in relation to the casting places; sometimes you need to row back a little to level the boat, and then, throwing the oars, take up the spinning rod and make that one and only cast that the stubborn current will allow. You can slow down the rafting speed with the help of a drift anchor, which I have talked about more than once on the pages of our magazine, but even with a drift anchor you absolutely cannot waste time “taking and putting down” the oar. On the wide Volga channels, I occasionally practice rafting on a single-oar botnik - where the work is carried out not point-by-point, but more over areas, there is always time for “pick up and put down”. But on small rivers - no, I personally find it inconvenient.
As a result, it turns out that if not a kayak, not a kayak, and not a single-oar botnik, then the choice of watercraft for rafting on a small river is an ordinary inflatable “comb”. And here there are options.
1. You were dropped by car (friend, wife, taxi) to point A, you pumped up the boat and rafted to point B in a day, where you were met again by car. In this case, the boat can be anything, there is no need to drag it and things, you can take the latter and in abundance. The main task of this option is to find people willing to take you to the river and take you out of it. The taxi, of course, will go where and when you say, but it will cost a lot of money. Sometimes I travel from Verkhniye Pechery by taxi to Kudma - in 2021 prices, the transfer cost about 500 rubles. He picks up his wife in his car after work, because if you spend money on a taxi again, it will cost more than 1000 - that’s too much. But if it suits someone, let them take note.
2. You yourself came by car, lowered the boat, rowed 5 km upstream and slowly rafted to the car. Our author Vladimir Fednov spoke about this option not long ago. Or, as a variation: upon arrival, I went downstream the same 5 kilometers, and then rowed up to the starting point. But this is worse: I don’t really want to row at the end of a fishing trip, let alone early in the morning, when it’s cool.
3. Option of our other author - Dmitry Buhonov. I arrived by car, pumped up, went rafting, after a few kilometers I finished the rafting, hid the boat and things, ran on foot to get the car - I arrived at point B. I can tell you from my own experience that walking after hard fishing is easier than swinging the oars: you get tired of sitting during the day, so it’s even nice to walk while warming up. And the speed of movement is higher: you walk lightly 5-6 kilometers per hour, and row at most 3, and if along rapids and rifts, then even less. In general, this is quite a working option.
4. Option without a car. I started from the Moskovsky station, took the train, got off in Kiselikha, walked to the river, went down to Rekshino, took the train again - and home. There are other, no less interesting, routes associated with public transport. You don’t depend on anyone, and the travel budget is quite acceptable, but there is one drawback - the weight of the luggage. My two inflatable boats are quite suitable for the three previous options, but are absolutely not combined with the “pawn”. At the very least, I can roll one of these two boats into a 120-liter comfortable backpack, but taking into account food, water and gear, it still turns out to be heavy and inconvenient - the total weight of the luggage is more than 15 kg. I googled the Internet and found the easiest option - a boat made of Finnish thin PVC called LAS-2. It weighs about half as much as its analogues (the full set is only a little over 6 kg) and should help expand the geography of my fishing trips or, at least, make the already familiar routes more enjoyable. I undertake to tell you in more detail about the new product in the next issue of our magazine.
Tackle
The main goal of my rafting fishing trips is white predator: ide, chub, and in some cases asp. On almost any rafting trip, unwanted pike bites occur, which end with the expensive bait being cut off. And, it seems, a small metal leash suggests itself, but on rivers with clear water the hand does not rise to coarse the tackle, and on rivers with less transparent water I follow the already developed stereotype... In general, I often fish without any leash. And I put up with the loss of bait on the sharp pike teeth. But in general, there is an understanding that a thin (from a vole, for example) and short (5 centimeters) metal leash does not particularly harm fishing, and reduces the number of cuts quite significantly. If the shine of a “fresh” metal leash is annoying, you can let it sit in some damp place and let it oxidize.
The favorite spinning rod for rafting fishing for seven years now is Smith’s Inter Boron XX 53MTH, which is only 159 cm tall. In general, it is much more convenient to fish on rafting with short tools. Although on wider rivers, such as Vetluga or Kerzhenets, it is quite appropriate to use slightly longer ones.
Reel Daiwa Luvias 2506. Cord is usually 0.4 PE Varivas Light Game Super Premium. Yes, it is expensive, but 150 meters bought in unwinding is enough for several seasons of frequent fishing. As an alternative, I’ll name the Daivo eight-core J-Braid x 8 with a diameter of 0.6 PE. It will be a little cheaper with quite comparable quality.
Lures. 90% of these are cranks up to 40 mm. In more or less clean areas, the use of shallow water (SR) engines, such as the Chubby 38F or Hellion 40 SR, is justified. However, by mid-August, many areas are so clogged with grass that there is no choice - only super-shallow ones. The same wobblers, but in the SSR version or, for example, the Camion Magnum SSR from Smith, to which not only the chub of small rivers, but also the ide responds well.
I give the remaining 10% to the turntables. There are situations when the cranks of a white predator “do not start”, at this time high-quality rotating spoons can save your fishing. The best, in my opinion, are handicraft spinners - they have more than once saved float fishing on the most uncool days.
Last year I became interested in “cockroaching” - that’s what we call fishing with floating silicone imitations of insects, at the suggestion of Konstantin Kuzmin. It’s much more convenient to “cockroach” from the shore - and it’s easier to make throws, and the fish’s exits to the bait are clearly visible... But once I found myself in a situation in Urga: chubs “as fast as they can” rush to a wobbler that has fallen on the water, but don’t take it. Silicone “cockroaches” would be just that useful there: it’s convenient or not convenient, and you could leave it for half an hour. Now I take a small box with several cockroaches with me on rafting trips - someday they will definitely “shoot out”.
Tactics and technique
Compared to coastal hunting for white predators, fishing from a drifting boat is quite primitive. Constant movement does not allow you to “unravel” a passive predator; in the vast majority of cases, guiding along a specific trajectory can be only one. No, in principle, anchoring and breaking through some element of the river relief is quite possible, but this is always a waste of time, so you can afford this kind of stop only a few times during the rafting, and not constantly. (If it’s constant, then it’s no longer rafting fishing, but fishing from a boat using points - a topic worthy of attention, but for a separate article.)
There is no point in listing all the possible options for a predator to stay - a bite on a small river can be literally anywhere! Turns, blockages, a grassy island, the entrance and exit from a riffle and, conversely, the entrance and exit into a hole, bushes or tree branches hanging over the water - all this needs to be scratched, scratched and scratched again. Well, I’m saying that fishing is primitive: the more casts and retrieves you make during the day, the greater the chances of holding a small river trophy in your hands: a weighty ide or chub. Along the way, of course, other fish fly in: the ubiquitous pike, perch, dace, rudd... these bites generally diversify rafting fishing, but do not please as much as the “thunderous” blows of a chub or the solid tumbles of an ide. The prestige of catching the last two in the amount of 800 grams is undeniable for me.
I recently talked about light equipment in a separate article, so today I will emphasize the importance of only two things: drinking water in sufficient quantities and repellent. For several years I have been using a compact ThermaCell fumigator against mosquitoes and midges. Look carefully at the final photo of this article - this is the June mass emergence of midges on Kerzhenets. If you get into this “flock” without repellent, believe me, there will be no time for fishing at all. I always treat sneakers and knee-length pants with anti-tick spray. Of course, the chances of catching a tick are greater during coastal fishing, but in any case you still have to get to the river... Take care of yourself!
Lure for raft fishing
As everyone knows, one of the essential characteristics for a jig bait is its weight. For fishing while drifting, you will need bait that weighs significantly less than when fishing the same point with an anchored boat.
Jig baits for fishing
The bait moves with the current almost at the same speed as your boat, as a result of which the influence of the current on the boat and on the line is greatly reduced. In particular, if for fishing from a place in a certain section of the river, heads weighing 25.7−45.5 g are used, then when fishing using an alloy, 14.5−22.5 g is enough.
It may seem that the spread between 25.7 and 45.5 g, between 14 and 22.5 g is very large. The weight of the bait depends very much on the direction of casting (down, up or across the current), on the difference in the strength of the current that passes under the boat, as well as on the place where the bait passes, and on the nature of this wiring. It is impossible to predict in advance what is the best way to lead - with a slow reeling line or a fast one, with minimal steps.
Twister
Often, in unknown places and in strong currents, I use twisters mounted on a jig head, because this is the most universal method. Baits with an articulated combination of sinker and hook are not bad only for places with a flat bottom and not very fast currents. If the terrain is difficult, there is no need to be tricky - just use a jig head. The bait moves along a complex trajectory relative to the current, while at the same time it simply scribbles along the bottom, then ends up in some hillock or “plows” the soil, and the “maneuverable” hook often overlaps with the line. There are no such problems with a jig head. Dragging the bait along the bottom without almost leaving it sometimes turns out to be an extremely effective method.
Twisters for fishing
Hook
A large hook is required, although with a short shank. The wiring speed is high, and the “fanged” one, it seems, will not have time to enter a convenient position for attack. If the bait is significant, then there can be a lot of false bites (I never attach additional tees to the jig head ring). But the fish swallows a small bait and firmly sits on the hook. In areas where snagging may occur, it is best to use hooks that can be confidently unbent on the braid used. Of course, there is a chance that they will be able to straighten up when catching large fish, although, in my opinion, such a chance is small.
Rafting planning
Despite its apparent simplicity, it is a very important aspect of the whole undertaking. Of course, it is advisable to first collect information about the section of the river that you intend to visit.
When I talk about “rafting,” I don’t mean fishing, when we go upstream an nth distance in a boat with a motor and then go down. Yes, and this is also an “alloy”.
But I want to talk about a true fishing tourist adventure.
I will omit the aspects of delivery to the starting point, as well as the issues of departure home. This is different for everyone: the presence or absence of a vehicle, the convenience of bus or train service, etc. These are all side issues of the journey itself.
For me personally, “rafting” is moving along small rivers, with their constantly changing conditions, constantly searching not so much for “fishing spots” - they themselves float past, but choosing the optimal methods, methods and techniques of fishing.
Route
Fishing by rafting in the cold season
In cold autumn or spring water, pike perch can often be found on stretches with a leisurely current. If there are no snags and stumps at the bottom, and the differences in depth are not very pronounced. Then the flock is often distributed along the riverbed at 90–250 m. In such a situation, it is more interesting and also more profitable to fish while drifting. Without anchoring, in order to find out where the larger pike perch are located without wasting time. This is not always easy to do. Large fish very often become mischievous, and as a rule, pike perch from 0.5 to 3.5 kg are caught with a twister. In truth, this is a normal situation; for fishing, we are looking for schooling fish. Although if there is confidence that, in addition to small pike perch, seasoned pike perch have also come out of their dens to plunder the river expanses, it makes sense to try to seduce it with other baits. First, you need to find out whether the size of the potential prey is currently important for large pike perch. Also, in addition to large twisters, you should also try vibrating tails with intense play. If there is no expected result, all that remains is to try “passive” baits - made from foam rubber or polyurethane foam. It happens that they are the ones who “shoot”.
When using baits with a hinge combined with a sinker head, overlaps of the hook with the fishing line are certainly possible, however, this happens at the time of fishing, not reconnaissance, and this is by far the least evil. We can already see that, say, from this bush to the shore along the ditch there are pike perch and, probably, they will not go anywhere in the next two to three hours. Lost two to three minutes due to overlap - no big deal; in the worst case scenario, we’ll catch one or two less pike perch, but after experimenting with baits, we’ll be able to catch a seasoned predator. In an area with a clean bottom and a not very fast current, heavy castmasters can be used with success. And at the same time, the composition of the fish caught may change slightly - pike and asp will be caught more often.
