Each river lives its own life: it overflows its banks and becomes turbulent during floods and floods, and during the summer heat it becomes shallow. The river greets winter with freeze-up - the process of formation of a continuous ice cover on its surface.

Freeze-up begins with the formation of banks - a crust of ice along the coast. Then slush appears - lumps of snow and ice floating on the surface and in the water column. The autumn ice drift begins, lasting for several weeks. The river becomes an obstacle. Driving along it during ice drift is difficult and dangerous.

The autumn ice drift cuts off the cordons of the reserve from civilization. Until the snowstorm is cleared, it is impossible to enter or leave them. The only communication with them at this time is exclusively by communication.

Ice drift changes life not only on the cordons, but also on the estate of the reserve. The boat becomes covered with ice, becomes heavy and clumsy. The motor refuses to work. The wind pierces with cold. Ice floes force you to maneuver and avoid collisions. All this accompanies people at the crossing.

Every day people need to travel: reserve workers to work, estate residents to shops, post office and other everyday matters. Of course, this cannot be called a feat, but there is something heroic in it.

Very soon frosts will come, the river will rise and people will calmly walk and drive along it. Snowstorms will be laid and our inspectors will be able to safely move between the cordons. An ice crossing will open at the central estate and it will be possible to drive directly to the office and museum of the reserve by car. Winter will come.

You can get to the river through Nizhny Tagil, then through Lysva, Chusovoy, Solikamsk, Cherdyn to the village of Bondyug. Highways cross the river in 2 places: 5 km from the mouth (a good dirt road from the village of Bondyug to the village of Chepets) and in the middle reaches (the road from the village of Bondyug to the village of Olkhovka). You can get to the source of the river by motor boat from the Vychegda River through the Northern Keltma River.

From the village of Bondyug along the South Keltma River through the Dzhurich River along the Northern Catherine Canal, 18 km long, you can go to the North Keltma River (Kanava village) and further to the Vychegda River (Ust-Kulom village). But we must remember that the canal has narrowed greatly since its construction (1822), and now only small boats can pass through it. The width of the canal in some places is 1-3 meters. The South Keltma River is a left tributary of the Kama River. The water in the upper reaches is dark, muddy, there are a lot of drifts in it, and the riverbed winds strongly. In the upper reaches, the Southern Keltma is narrow, after the confluence of the Timshor it becomes wide and calm, and sandy shoals appear. The banks of the Southern Keltma are hilly, with forest growing along the banks. The river's feeding is mixed, with snow prevailing. Ice from November to the end of April.

What kind of fish lives in Pechora
