Lake Gusinoe is located in the northern part of the Leningrad region, on the Karelian Isthmus. Nearby, just 28 km to the southeast, is the city of Priozersk. This region is famous for its bodies of water. In addition to Gusinoye, there are other lakes here: Sukhodolskoye and Otradnoye. They are connected to each other by small channels. On the south side you can see a stream flowing out of the lake. It has an original name – Transparent. Also, through a small strait, Lake Gusinoye (Priozersky district) is connected to the large Ladoga lake.
a brief description of
The lake has an oblong shape, reminiscent of the neck of a goose. Because of this feature, the reservoir got its name. The lake stretches from north to south for almost 9 km. But its width changes. The maximum figure was recorded in the central region – 1 km. The bottom of Lake Gusinoye is uneven; there are often humps and rifts. Bottom sediments are also unevenly distributed. In the southern part of the lake the bottom is silted and overgrown with algae. The northern one is rocky; there are practically no areas with a flat bottom. Sometimes you come across a snag on this side. Due to silt bottom sediments, the water acquires a brownish tint. On clear days, transparency can reach 2 m, and from a distance Lake Gusinoye appears blue. The depth of the reservoir varies. The maximum value is 14 m, found mainly in the central part. In the coastal zone, the depths are small - only 1-1.5 m.
The lake is fed mainly by meltwater during the flood period. At other times of the year it is fed by ground streams.

The thickets are mainly represented by pine species, but fir, birch, and various shrubs are occasionally found. The forests are inhabited by bears, foxes, hares, squirrels, ferrets, and sometimes wolves.
Lake Gusinoye is rarely overgrown with algae. Sometimes plants are found near the coast. The most common types: pondweed, egg capsule, reed and elodea.
Terrain features
The Karelian Isthmus is a piece of land that connects the Scandinavian Peninsula and the mainland of Eurasia. The relief of this area is interesting. Throughout its entire area, the isthmus is composed of hills and mounds, which alternate with valleys of glacial origin. The fact that there was a glacier on this territory for a long time is also evidenced by the presence of a large number of lakes. There are about 400 of them in total. These reservoirs are characterized by a similar origin - they are all glacial.
Gusinoye belongs to the Lake Ladoga basin. It has no islands. Due to the presence of mainly podzolic and podzolic-boggy soils in this region, water mineralization does not occur. But in Lake Gusin, as in other reservoirs of the Karelian Isthmus, the water is oversaturated with iron compounds.
Story
On maps dating back to the 17th century, within the modern water area of Gusinoe Lake there are three lakes, separated by isthmuses. At the beginning of the 18th century there were already two of them, and by the middle of the same century, as a result of tectonic activity, the bottom of the bowl sank and the banks simultaneously rose. After the earthquake of 1742, the reservoir turned into a single whole. A little later, the basin was filled to the brim thanks to the breakthrough of water flows from the Temnik River.
At the beginning of the 19th century, Goose Lake began to shallow, which is why two islands formed in its waters. However, half a century later, in 1862, another shift in the earth’s crust occurred, leading to an increase in the area of the reservoir towards the Zagustai steppe, the disappearance of land areas within its borders and the appearance of a stable flow into the Selenga River. Since then, Goose Lake has not changed its shape.

The water body was first described in 1854 by the historiographer, researcher and writer N. Bestuzhev, who was sent to settle in Buryatia for participating in the Decembrist uprising, and by local historian and ethnographer P. Kelberg. In the second half of the last century, the remains of ancient animals that became extinct during the Ice Age were discovered on the western bank of Gusinoye.
Climate
What weather is typical for this region? This question interests many tourists who want to come to Lake Gusinoye. The climate of the region is greatly influenced by air masses from the Atlantic. Winter is moderately warm, summer is humid, and autumn is often warmer than spring; many call it velvet. The cold season is characterized by thaws when the temperature reaches +5...+7 °C. The summer period is short, the warmest month is July. Average temperature – +17…+19 °С. Sometimes the warmth can last until mid-October. Most of the precipitation occurs in the summer season.
Undersea world
Lake Gusinoe is rich in various species of fauna. This is a favorite place for fishing in the Leningrad region. Although recently there has been a tendency for the population of underwater representatives to decrease, nevertheless, fishermen from nearby cities come to these places all year round. Each of them knows that no one will leave this reservoir without a catch. Common fish species in the lake are perch, ruffe, burbot, roach, pike, and bream. Less often, but it still happens, fishermen catch pike perch, trout, crucian carp and ide.
Toponym
There are several options for the origin of such an unusual name for the lake. The Buryats still mention Khulyn-Nur, which in Russian means “legs-lake”. Most likely, this interpretation comes from the time when three “puddles” could be forded.
Another version is associated with birds of the same name. There are records indicating that geese nested in large numbers on the islands exposed after the lake shallowed. The Buryats, considering the reservoir sacred, did not allow birds to be hunted, thereby ensuring their peace. Currently, the presence of birds in the surrounding areas is not observed, but the memory of them is preserved in the toponym.

One Tungus legend says that people who came to these places heard a restless bird noise at night, and in the morning they saw a huge number of sea eagles flying over the lake. Apparently, they were unhappy with the appearance of strangers here and tried to loudly declare their rights to the surrounding spaces. The most respected Tungus then told his fellow tribesmen that this lake belonged to the Gus (that’s what he called the flock of eagle).
Gusinoye Lake: how to get there?
The nearest settlement is located in the north, a few kilometers from the reservoir - the village of Priladozhsky. To get to Lake Gusinoye, you should go from St. Petersburg to the north along Priozerskoye Highway. Having reached the village of Sapernoye, you need to turn right, and after a few kilometers you will see the lake.
You can also reach these places by rail. The nearest station where the train arrives is Gromovo. But the distance from it to the lake is 28 km, you will have to walk it or, if you’re lucky, catch a ride. The best way to get to Goose Lake is by car.
Goose Lake
As mentioned above, Goose Lake (Buryatia) is important for this region. Here they organize not only simple fishing on boats or from the shore, but also spearfishing. Every year there are competitions between those who want to show their skills. During spearfishing, they not only have fun, but also leave with an impressive catch. As a rule, on average it is about 5 kg. The lake is home to large specimens of pike and perch, and there is also crucian carp. However, it is better to catch the latter in winter. It is not recommended to feed fish in this reservoir, as this will only collect small perch.
Locals advise moving around different places at regular intervals. Fishing in Buryatia for crucian carp is carried out using a jig of bright colors. The most suitable fishing line diameter is 0.2 mm. If you use a float rod with two hooks, the catch can be about 10 kg. The best bait to use is maggots or bloodworms.

Holidays on the lake
Currently, Lake Gusinoye is a popular place among local vacationers. The abundance of fish, sandy beaches, and shallow coastal areas attract many people here in the summer season. There are dirt roads along the eastern and western edges of the lake, so access to the reservoir will not be difficult. Settlements are located in the north, and on the western shore there are boarding houses, recreation centers, cottages, and camping sites. On the eastern side there is a dense pine forest. Tourists go there to pick mushrooms and berries.
Relaxation on the pond
In the summer, especially on weekends, many vacationers come to the lake. They are attracted by the surrounding landscapes, clean air, sandy beaches, clear water and the absence of city bustle. Families and friends, small and large groups go here. As a rule, savages stay in tents.
A feature of these places is sudden changes in weather conditions. On a calm, cloudless day, a strong wind can blow out of nowhere, raise waves and immediately subside. Rain clouds often appear in the clear sky and just as suddenly disappear in an unknown direction. Such situations should be taken into account, but if you familiarize yourself with weather forecasters before your trip, you can expect much fewer surprises during your vacation.
