Brateevsky Cascade Park - a green recreation area with a unique landscape

On the right bank of the Moscow River and Boriskovsky Ponds, Brateevsky Park appeared, which is often called cascade because it descends from an ordinary street to the river in small terraces, like a cascade.

This is a fairly young park area - it opened in 2006. Before the founding of the park, the resources of the territory were used - soil and sand were taken from here, resulting in the formation of a bay.

Historical facts

In the 80s, builders took soil from the coastal area necessary for the construction of residential buildings in Maryino. This led to the formation of a bay with an area of more than 7.5 hectares. Subsequently, decommissioned ships began to be laid up there, turning this place into a dumping ground for “lost ships,” which existed for more than 15 years.

At the very beginning of the new millennium, construction of a tunnel began in Lefortovo. A huge amount of soil and sand had to be transported somewhere.

At the proposal of the architects, a reasonable and timely solution was found: to turn the littered bay in Brateevo into a landscape park. More than 600 thousand m3 of soil were brought in to improve the embankment and fill the wetlands.

Under the guidance of landscape designers, workers built cascading slopes to the river, carried out landscaping work, laid paths, and installed benches. The result is a magnificent oasis next to dense residential development. The townspeople immediately began to come here. The official opening took place in 2006.

Ten years later, landscaping and construction of leisure facilities continued in this area. This made it possible to hold cultural, entertainment and sports events.

The fireworks festival under the auspices of Rostec with the participation of international teams and the youth military sports game Zarnitsa have become traditional. In the summer of 2021, restoration and construction work on improvement was carried out here again.

History of the park

The very appearance of this Moscow landmark is unique. Back in 1980, sand was regularly exported here for construction needs. In the resulting backwater, they organized the last refuge of decommissioned ships, which were slowly rusting here.

Some of them went under water, and the whole picture as a whole was reminiscent of “The Island of Lost Ships” by the writer Alexander Belyaev.

Over time, the idea arose to fill in the creek and create a cascade park. However, a lot of work still had to be done to make the park cozy and comfortable for relaxation. Brateevsky Park was opened in the fall of 2006.

The green zone is gradually developing, more and more vacationers come here, sports and mass entertainment events are held in the park, thanks to which more and more citizens and guests of the capital are discovering this place.

Characteristic

Brateevsky Cascade Park, which can be reached not only from the center of Moscow, occupies a huge area of tens of hectares. It can be divided into several zones; the most developed part of the park is located on 3 artificially created hills. Starting immediately from Borisovskie Prudy Street, the park descends in several terraces (cascades) to the granite embankment of the Moscow River.

Modern stairs with ramps have been built on the terraces. This makes it easier for parents with strollers and people with disabilities to descend them. From the observation deck of the upper tier you can see an impressive panorama of the park, the embankment and the opposite bank of the river.

Throughout the entire territory, which is illuminated in the evenings and takes on fantastic shapes, there are numerous “transport arteries” for walking and cycling, intertwined in an intricate pattern. There are several gazebos of unusual shapes, colorful playgrounds for children with modern attractions and safe rubberized surfaces.

There are gaming devices for children with disabilities. Comfortable benches and tables with benches appeared in different corners, and picnic areas were equipped. Bright flower beds, young trees and shrubs, and weeping willows with luxurious branches are pleasing to the eye.

The artificially created pond is home to fish, and in the evenings frogs perform their serenade. Along the river embankment, families of ducks swim and seagulls fly. You can see white water lilies near the shore. The river backwater is freed from rusty boats, now it reflects the clouds floating in the sky and the enchanting lights of fireworks during the festival.

The park has a football field, volleyball and basketball courts, a tennis court and table tennis equipment, and exercise equipment for outdoor sports.

Park area infrastructure

On the territory of the “Brateevskaya floodplain” the following is organized and equipped:

  • five playgrounds;
  • baseball field;
  • twelve sports zones;
  • areas for quiet relaxation;
  • summer cinema with more than one hundred seats;
  • outdoor solarium with an area of 208 sq. m (with sun loungers);
  • concert stage;
  • cafes and fast food outlets.

A special pride of the park is the baseball field, where training and competitions of specialized amateur clubs are held. Its outline in plan resembles the stylized shape of a diamond, and its special coating complies with the design standards of tennis courts.

There are separate courts for fans of volleyball, football and basketball. Guests can visit the tennis court or play table tennis. In winter, the football field will be turned into a city skating rink with artificial ice, and the bike path will be turned into a ski track.

In the “quiet” areas there are gazebos and swings, tables for quiet games and comfortable benches (there are about a thousand of them in total). Modern trash cans are placed throughout, blending well with the surrounding landscape. For lovers of hiking, there is an eco-trail up to one kilometer long in the park.

The length of the bike paths is more than 13 km. They have special markings. At night they are illuminated, as are all the alleys. The park has about 550 lights and a video surveillance system. There are bicycle rental points on site, as well as several bicycle parking areas.
