Lake name
Lake Ilmen (emphasis on the first I) is a source of myths and legends, for example, some scientists believe that it comes from the Finno-Ugric dialect Ilmeri means “heavenly powers”, while others think that the lake got its name in honor of Ilmera, the sister of the princes of Slovenia and Rusa. Still others talk about the name “Elijah,” which is translated “power of God.” Yu.V. Otkupshchikov noted that the term “ilmen” is found not only in Novgorod, but also in the south, therefore, most likely, it is of Greek origin, as part of the path from the Varangians to the Greeks, and comes from the word “il,” that is, muddy bottom.

Lake Ilmen in the east of the Tambov region has more than a kilometer in diameter.
On the way from Uvarovo, I sat at the boat dock on the southern shore of Ilmen, dangling my feet in the warm greenish water. And he decided to straighten his path - to go to the village of Karaul. I went in a western direction. I missed the clearing that led among the pines to the left, thinking that it would lead me in the wrong direction. The lane first ran along the pine trees, then turned right, passed through two small roads, led into some meadow and disappeared on a mow. For some reason I decided that he would certainly appear after the mowing, and I moved on.
But behind the group of trees there was no path. It was a long way to get to the next ones. At first, the grass in the meadow was short, then thorns, calistegia, and sedges began to appear on it. The further, the more. The bicycle had to be pushed with effort. In the end, there was a continuous sedge up to waist height. Further on loomed a low willow tree, and in front of it protruded reinforced concrete pillars driven into the ground. They stuck out about two meters. I decided that this was where the road was, and rushed towards the pillars. But there was no road there either. Moreover, stopping at the very post, I went more than knee-deep with one foot into the water. And I didn’t reach the bottom!
I went back through the cattail a little and took a left. I reached a tall broom tree. I naively believed that a small river, Chernavka, flows along the broom tree. I decided to force it. The closer to the river, the more moist the soil becomes. Here is the “river”. Only its near edge is visible. The other is hidden by thickets of willow, dead wood and climbing calystegia. I step above the water along the densest areas of interweaving of dry branches. I struggle to push through the thicket with my bike on my shoulder. I'm balancing. I move over the water in zigzags, choosing places where the thickets are less dense. The depth of the reservoir beneath me is gradually increasing. Finally, in front of me there is such a dense interweaving of branches that it is completely impossible to get further. We have to get ashore. I got one leg wet up to the ankle.
Through the tall grass intertwined with calistegia, I emerged onto the path. But the path turned out to be my own footprint in the form of slightly trampled grass. And the trail led to the same broom.
Then I decided to get my bearings properly and climbed onto the willow tree. Five meters, maybe. No more needed.
From a tree over a willow braided with calistegia, I saw... the surface of Lake Ilmen. And this is not the Chernavka River at all!
And we had to get out onto the dirt road through this entire large meadow in the opposite direction. Through sedge, tall grass, calistegia. In general, it took me three hours to make an unsuccessful attempt to go around Ilmen from the west. Having got out onto the country road, I drove along a well-trodden road - through Alatorka - to the Uvarovo - Inzhavino highway. You won't get lost there...

Geography
When Peter I began to build a bypass canal called Vyshnevolotsky - to supply St. Petersburg with food and other goods from the center of Russia, he noticed that almost fifty rivers flow into the Ilmen reservoir, but only one flows out: the Volkhov. Russian Leonardo Mikhail Vasilyevich Lomonosov laid the foundation for a scientific in-depth study of the Ilmen lowland. As a result of the activities of various expeditions in 1962, the Ilmensky Klint, as the longest formation of the Devonian stage on the East European Plain, became an official natural monument.
Today Lake Ilmen can be considered shallow. It has a flat bottom consisting of a ten-meter thickness of silt. The maximum water depth is 10 meters, and along almost the entire length, that is, about 45 km, you can walk on foot and catch either a fish or a mine from the Second World War. The width in some places is up to 35 km, and the banks are low-lying. There are a lot of deltas in those places where numerous rivers and rivers flow into the Ilmen reservoir. This also determined the occupation of the population: there were many pastures and a lot of arable land.

Lake Ilmen is located in the very heart of Russian lands - a few kilometers south of the city of Veliky Novgorod. Today its area is about 1000 square kilometers. During floods, the area of the lake increases to 2,200 square kilometers, and when the water subsides, it decreases to 650 square kilometers. The depth of the lake does not exceed 10 m.
Lake Ilmen is perhaps one of the most significant bodies of water in the history of the Russian people. It is mentioned in legends and chronicles, and there seems to be no end to the archaeological finds on its banks dating back to different historical eras.
The formation of Lake Ilmen dates back to the end of the last ice age. After the retreat of the Valdai glacier, a large reservoir was formed on the site of the lake, the depth of which reached 30 m. And within its modern borders, Ilmen arose, as geologists believe, about 6,000 years ago, when the settlement of this territory by people began. The etymology of the lake's name is quite confusing. The origin of the name is considered to be closest to reality from Finnish words, the meaning of which can be translated as “lake of bad weather.” Ilmen is really known for its harsh temperament: in just an hour, a storm wind can arise on the lake, capable of capsizing fishing boats.

Since ancient times, the lake has played an important role in the lives of the people who inhabited its shores. Ilmen was very rich in fish. Even today, when only a small part of its former greatness remains, the lake is home to quite a few valuable species of fish, and it is a favorite vacation spot for fishermen. Back in the middle of the last century, you could find ancient fishing boats here - sailing soymas.
On its banks are the ancient Russian cities of Veliky Novgorod and Staraya Russa. And in the 15th century, the famous battle between the Moscow and Novgorod armies took place here, and the result of the defeat of Novgorod was the signing of a peace treaty.
The Volkhov River flows from Lake Ilmen and flows into Lake Ladazhskoye. This is the oldest transport route along which large merchant ships moved.
Unfortunately, today Lake Ilmen is slowly disappearing. About 50 rivers flow into it, bringing a lot of sediment and suspended matter in their waters. For this reason, the bottom becomes covered with silt, becomes shallow, the flow of the reservoir decreases, and it gradually becomes overgrown with aquatic vegetation. Of course, this process is still going on unnoticed, and several more generations will be able to enjoy the view of this wonderful lake.
History of Lake Ilmen
Archaeologists, historians and linguists date the appearance here about 75 thousand years ago, which was associated with the retreat of the glacier. This place was inhabited by Ilmen Slovenes and Russ, whose origin we do not know for sure. It is believed that they lived on the shores of the Baltic. They were neighbors and often attacked Slavic villages. Thus, the Tale of Bygone Years mentions the lake as part of the trade route “from the Varangians to the Greeks,” as well as “from the Varangians to the Persians.” Lake Ilmen was also mentioned in epics, for example, about Sadko, who was also familiar with the sea king, apparently derived from the name of the lake. Even today, unique boats run on the lake - Ilmen soymas. This is a punt with a pair of short masts and a small keel 15–18 meters in length. This is what Sadko used a thousand years ago. Nearby is the city of Novgorod the Great with its centuries-old history, and the city of Volkhov, where today excavations are underway to search for those killed during the Great Patriotic War.

Holidays on Ilmen include excursions to historical places, swimming, fishing and hunting. Water riding on the lake is not possible due to changeable weather and increased danger of local waves. They can capsize and sink a small ship, and there are no islands on which to shelter from bad weather.
Travel agencies offer only one option for a boat trip - a tour to the island of Lipno.
Now it is uninhabited, but there are ruins of a 13th century church on it. This is the only safe and proven route.
Lake Ilmen on the map of Russia attracts vacationers from many areas. Near the walls of the Novgorod Kremlin there is the main city beach with equipped places for recreation. But it is located on the banks of the Volkhov. But on Ilmen itself there are not so many places for swimming. This is due to its geographical characteristics: its banks are low, flat, in places swampy or overgrown with reeds.
The uniqueness of Lake Ilmen
The reservoir is unusual for its huge size and banks. They are swampy, and also have an 8 km long ledge and a 15 meter cliff between the villages of Korosten and Pustosh, so for the trip you need to be well equipped with ropes and boots. The lake is so huge that it gives the feeling of the sea, you can even hear the sound of the surf. Now Ilmen is a “dying” reservoir due to the impact of geological processes of siltation and the drift of its bed with river sediments.
Things to do and see near the lake
Seasoned St. Petersburg and Novgorod residents begin the swimming season on Lake Ilmen already in June. The temperature of Ilmen water, even in August, does not rise above +20° C. Despite this, there are many vacationers on the sandy beaches of Korostynya, Sergovo, and Retle all summer. You can stay on the banks of the Ilmen in village houses, boarding houses, and recreation centers.
For fishermen, Lake Ilmen is interesting for its abundant bite. Despite the work of several fishing teams, even from the shores using a fishing rod, the following are caught with spinning rods:

In the forests of the southern and eastern coast of Ilmen, vacationers collect berries and mushrooms. Two or three weeks spent among northern Russian nature will not make you disappointed in your choice of vacation spot.
Vegetation, fishing
The lake is home to approximately 40 species of fish: ruffe, asp, bream, tench, burbot, perch, roach, bluegill, smelt, catfish, pike perch, bleak, sabrefish, ide, etc. They say that there is fish everywhere on the lake, a real “golden bottom" for fishermen. Fishing on Ilmen is reminiscent of the film The Diamond Arm, when fishing was always successful, but here there was no need for Anatoly Papanov to hook the fish. According to reviews from residents, there is so much fish here that sometimes it’s not even interesting. Pike are huge, rich in caviar, requiring special art of fishing with live bait. Bacteria living in the lake eat rotten algae, and this digestion process produces flammable gas. Therefore, in winter, fishermen do this: they chop the ice and set fire to the gas coming from the hole. On such a “bonfire” it is quite possible to warm up, boil water, cook fish or bake potatoes in a pot. They say that today there are few such bacteria and the lake is becoming polluted. The forests are home to raccoon dogs, hares, squirrels, martens, foxes, stoats, beavers, muskrats and minks. You can also meet brown bears, lynx, oxen, wild boars, and roe deer. There are also moose, and among the birds there are ducks, geese, wood grouse, black grouse, partridges, woodcock, hazel grouse, snipe, waders, etc. So hunting is also good during the season.

Church of the Savior on Nereditsa, Church of St. Nicholas on the Divan, Perynsky Skete, Traveling Palace of Alexander the First, Klopsky Monastery. There is even a rock garden. From here it is convenient to get to Staraya Russa and Veliky Novgorod. Notable are the monuments of the war with the Germans, for example, two monuments to the 19th ski brigade of Yakuts who died on the shore of the lake. There is a legend that the stones around the lake are still red because of the spilled blood. On the shore of this lake, an agreement was signed with Ivan the Third about the end of the Novgorod boyar aristocratic republic.
How to get to Lake Ilmen
The most convenient way to get to Lake Ilmen near Veliky Novgorod is by car from the city itself; just take the Yuryevskoye Highway in the direction of Ilmen, Peschany or Sergovo, or take an intercity bus to Staraya Russa and Shimsk.
From Moscow you can get to the lake by car along the M-10 highway to Veliky Novgorod, and near this city you can turn onto one of the roads leading to the lake. You can also get from the capital to Novgorod and the famous lake by train from the Leningradsky or Kursky station - the travel time will take about 10 hours.
From St. Petersburg you can go to Lake Ilmen by car along the Moskovskoye Highway to Podberezye, and then straight ahead, bypassing the turn to Moscow. Another option is to take the Lastochka at the Moskovsky station or use the intercity bus departing from the bus station at the Obvodnoy Kanal metro station.
Tourism
Today Ilmen is a popular travel destination. Along the shores of the lake there are tourist centers, campsites and hotels, many of which provide fishing and hunting. For lovers of antiquity, trips to numerous monasteries are organized. For example, here there is the village of Golino of the 13th century and the cultural places of Veliky Novgorod located nearby, famous for the struggle of Alexander Nevsky with the crusaders, the Mikeshin monument to the Millennium of Russia, known to each of us from a school history textbook. Only here does history come to life and you can see with your own eyes the heroic pages of the struggle of the Russian people against foreign invaders in different historical eras. The Lovat and Shelon rivers will tell you about the battle sites; numerous finds and monuments testify to the original Novgorod architectural style.
Renting a house from local residents is a very expensive pleasure, costing 3,000 rubles per day in the village of Korostyn, so not everyone can afford such an exotic experience and prefers camping for 780 rubles per day.
Recreation centers on Lake Ilmen
You can relax at comfortable recreation centers. They offer year-round recreation and entertainment for lovers of wildlife, hunting and fishing.
The most popular village is Vzvad, located on the southern coast in the area of the Ilmensky Klint. Since ancient times, princes and imperial persons visited these places, hunting and fishing.
During Soviet times, a fish tank was built on the coast, which is still in operation today. This is where popular recreation centers are located, and local residents are ready to rent out a room or house to a visiting tourist. Prices are reasonable.
Many bases are located along the banks of rivers entering the Ilmen basin.

- During the times of Kievan Rus, the lake was part of the famous trade route “from the Varangians to the Greeks””;
- The epic name of Ilmen is Lake Sadko, and in the Middle Ages the reservoir was called the Slovenian Sea - because of its vastness and unique water spill system;
- On the southern bank of Ilmen there is the so-called Ilmen glint - this is a cliff-ledge. Its height is 15 m and its length is 8 km, occupying the territory between two villages - Pustosh and Korostyn. In the limestone that makes up Glint, geologists have found many marine fossils dating back to the Devonian period. Mineral springs and very rare plant species were also discovered here.

The lake fauna is represented by different species of fish. Most of the river inhabitants here are pike, burbot, smelt, bream, perch, sabrefish, etc. Whitefish is rarely found. There was more of this fish, but after the Volkhov hydroelectric power station was built, the whitefish population decreased sharply.

On the shores of Lake Ilmen there are a huge number of insects, which is associated with wetlands and coastal areas, high humidity. There are especially many blood-sucking insects here, among which it is worth noting gadflies, mosquitoes, horseflies, and midges.
There are many birds that nest, such as mallards, corncrake and many others. There are otters that are listed in the Red Book.
