Hunting for salmon on the Kola Peninsula

Reservoirs of the Arkhangelsk region

The Arkhangelsk region is a perfect place for fishing, a large number of rivers and lakes, amazing nature and an abundance of different types of fish, including such expensive species as salmon, whitefish, grayling, nelma, trout.

There are 70 thousand large and small rivers in the region with a total length of 275,000 km, and more than 200 thousand lakes. The deepest rivers, the Northern Dvina and Pechora, are second only to the Volga in terms of water content. In the reservoirs of the region there are bream, pike, vendace, perch, burbot, grayling, whitefish, brown trout, roach, salmon, and sterlet.

Many rivers of the Arkhangelsk region belong to the White Sea basin. Huge rivers such as the Northern Dvina, Onega, Kuloi and Mezen flow here.

The river network in this region is dense and relatively evenly developed. Each there are about 2 thousand watercourses more than 10 km long.

The main rivers of the region originate near the southern borders and flow in a northwestern direction.

  • The Mezen River is a river in the Komi Republic and Arkhangelsk region. Length 966 km. The Mezen River Takes its introduction from the swamps on the western slopes of the Timan Ridge (Komi Republic). Making a bend and turning first to the west and then to the north, it flows towards the Arkhangelsk region. Flowing through the Arkhangelsk region, it gradually turns north. And after merging with Vashka, it turns sharply to the north. In the very north, near the city of Mezen, it flows into the Mezen Bay of the White Sea. In the upper reaches the banks are high and rocky, on average the Mezen is winding, with many rifts making navigation difficult. In the lower reaches, below the mouth of the Vashka River, the channel is replete with shoals and riffles. High water in May - June, rain floods in summer and autumn. It freezes in late October - mid-November, opens in late April - early May. The river is home to fishermen, grayling, lenok, burbot, char, dace, bream, nelma, omul, fisherman, whitefish, and pike perch.
  • The Onega River is a river in the north-west of Russia, in the Arkhangelsk region. The length of the Onega River is 416 km. Takes the preface from Lake Lacha. It flows across the plain, in places forming wide reaches. It flows first in a northerly direction, making a bend near the town of Mirolubivy. 75 km from the mouth the river divides into the Huge Onega and the Small Onega, which then merge again. Near the city, Onega flows into the Onega Bay of the White Sea. At the mouth it splits into two branches - Dvinsky and Karelian, divided by the island of Kiy. The banks are relatively high, forested, and there are water meadows in the middle reaches. The river is home to fish such as ide, roach, pike, perch, crucian carp and salmon.
  • The Northern Dvina River is a river in the north of European Russia.
    The length of the Northern Dvina River is 744 km (with the Malaya Northern Dvina), the length with the Sukhona River is 1300 km. The Northern Dvina River is formed by the confluence of the Sukhona and Yug rivers (near the city of Epochalny Ustyug in the Vologda region). Then it flows north, to the Arkhangelsk region. Near the city, Kotlas merges with the Vychegda, later turning to the northwest, and then gradually to the north. Approximately in the very north it merges with Pinega. Near Arkhangelsk and Severodvinsk it flows into the Dvina Bay of the White Sea. The river is home to fish: ide, roach, pike, perch, bream, burbot, crucian carp, and silver bream. The largest lakes in the Arkhangelsk region are Lacha, Kenozero and Kozhozero. A huge part of the lakes are concentrated to the west of Onega and are located in groups, attached to moraine piles. Among the countless lakes, there are often failed karst lakes with an unstable layer of water, as well as swamp and riverine lakes, or, as they are also called, oxbow lakes. The largest lake in the Lacha region is the main freshwater reservoir of the Arkhangelsk region, where up to 30 percent of every lake fish in the region is caught, mainly bream.

Let us remind you that the Arkhangelsk region includes the Nenets independent district. Among the lakes of the Nenets Okrug, Golodnaya Guba and lake systems such as the Vashutkinsky lakes, Indigersky lakes and others stand out to a greater extent. The lakes here are mostly shallow, their area is up to 3 square kilometers, the average depth is up to 3 meters, in rare cases - 5 meters. Lake basins in most cases are of residual glacial and thermokarst origin; relict oxbow lakes are located in river valleys.

Fishing in the Arkhangelsk region undoubtedly brings fishermen an excellent catch. The region's lakes are home to a wide variety of fish species, including roach, perch, pike, ide, bream and other species. Planned fishing is carried out on many lakes. The shores of the lakes are equipped with recreation centers where fishermen can stay overnight so that fishing is a comfortable vacation. In the Kenozersky National Park, in addition to the largest lake in the Kenozero Park, there is a whole chain of lakes, in one of which, Lekshmozero, the second largest, Lekshmozero whitefish and vendace are found.

White Sea

The White Sea, or, as it used to be called, the Icy Sea, is one of the smallest seas washing our country. Its surface area is 90 thousand km², along with numerous islands, among which the most famous are the Solovetsky Islands. The shores of the White Sea are indented by numerous lips and bays.

Very exciting fishing in the waters of the White Sea for such valuable species of fish as trout and salmon - large migratory marine fish that feed in the sea and spawn in freshwater rivers.

Typically, summer fishing begins in mid-June, after the end of the flood. Exceptions are also acceptable, for example, pre-flood fishing. Some rivers open up before the flood occurs, caused by heavy melting of snow, in this case unique data are obtained: a river cleared of ice, a small layer of water and its clear transparency, energetic fish and the likelihood of reaching the fishing spot on snow, on skis or a snowmobile.

Later, when the ice in the swamps melts, this probability will disappear. During the day the air temperature can rise to 15 degrees; each fish stays in the shade of trees or under fast ice. Such data, as usual, comes in April. The most unique thing is that in this case it is possible to fish with a dry fly while standing knee-deep in the snow. After the winter dreams of fishing, hundreds of flies tied over the winter waited in the wings! Unfortunately, such a period is very fleeting.

After the end of the spring flood (how quickly the water subsides and clears up depends on the amount of precipitation that fell during the winter), the main season begins, usually from mid-June. In mid-summer, night fishing is most productive as the nights are white and the sun only sets for a couple of hours. Fishing ends with ice cover in October. However, some rivers do not freeze in any frost throughout the winter, and fly fishing is possible on them in late autumn and even winter.

Winter fishing in the region belonging to the Northern Territory can be carried out in Arkhangelsk itself. Fishing within the city on the Northern Dvina is a particularly affordable option. But here the population of ichthyofauna representatives is declining every year. This is the merit of the enterprises that dump grimy waste into the Northern Dvina. While the ichthyofauna has not completely disappeared, you can catch perch and ruffe here, and if you are a highly professional fisherman, you will certainly catch whitefish and pike.

Winter fishing is carried out safely in the forest lakes of the Arkhangelsk region: Izhmozero and Smerdye. In the first case, you will need a local guide. In the second case, it will not be needed, since Smerdye is located next to the M8 highway. There are no cold winds here, and the catch can consist of bream, bream, ruff, perch and roach.

3rd option for winter fishing - White Sea. But this option is only for lovers of menacing romance: the wind is strong, the cold is powerful, like the local fish. What else is needed for breathtaking fishing. Probably nothing, this is a real adventure in itself, requiring overcoming many difficulties. But in order to fish here, you must get to the fishing site in off-road vehicles and take the necessary equipment with you, then smelt and navaga will definitely catch on your hooks.

Ways to increase your catch!

Having 10 years of fishing experience, I have learned many ways to return home with a rich catch. Here are the most effective:

  1. Bite activator. This additive with pheromones causes a wild appetite even in well-fed and passive fish, attracting them to the fishing spot from long distances. The Fish Hungry bite activator has proven itself to be excellent - more details...
  2. Gear with increased sensitivity. You should first familiarize yourself with the features of using a particular type.
  3. Pheromone lures. They attract the attention of fish, stimulate hunger and cause a schooling reflex, which allows you to collect a lot of fish in one place.

You can get the rest of the secrets of successful fishing for free by reading my other materials on the site.

There are many types of fish in the river, you will not be left without a catch. Flounder is often caught in the lower reaches in summer. For fishing, you can use all permitted types of gear, but experienced fishermen say that the most interesting activity is catching large pike with a spinning rod.

Fishing on Lach

The main activity in these places is bream fishing. There are also a lot of pike perch, perch, crucian carp, and pike. On tributaries in spring, the weight of pike reaches 6 kg; it mainly lives in channels up to one meter deep. The most important thing and, by the way, not always difficult is to find a place for pike; in the period from March to the end of April, for obvious reasons, there are simply no other fish. In May, white fish appear, a little later shoals of bream.

As for bream, it is not easy to catch. He is constantly on the move, so you will have to apply a lot of skill and skill.

By the way, if you come to this place for fishing, ask local fishermen for advice, they know exactly where this fish is found.

Around the end of April, whole schools of fish gather in shallow water, and you can catch them right from the shore. There are bream, ide, perch and roach here. It is best to choose a rod with a reel.

It is better not to go into shallow water on your own, as the places are swampy. It is recommended to fish in calm weather; cliffs and snags happen very often at this time.

The beauty of the north is combined with a pleasant and useful pastime. The fishing and hunting base “Mansa” is an excellent choice for an active holiday, exploring new places and gaining unforgettable impressions.

Located near the coast of the Barents Sea, the Mansa base provides an opportunity from May to September to go fishing for salmon, grayling, brown trout, char, pink salmon, river flounder and other types of fish.

The base, equipped with everything you need, will be your outpost while you and our huntsman conquer the waters and undoubtedly conduct successful fishing.

In addition, he will help with good advice and with the rental of missing equipment or gear, will assist in cutting and preserving the catch, suggest fishing spots and reveal the secret of preparing excellent fish dishes.

Snowmobiles such as "Buran" and "Lynx"

First option: helicopter transfer by MI-8 about 1.5 hours to the Mansa base

Second option: (depending on the weather) from Arkhangelsk by An-2 flight to the village of Nizhnyaya Pesha, then by Buran to the Mansa base (distance 80 km). Return by the same route

Fishing in Arkhangelsk does not stop either in summer or winter. In the summer, anglers stop at the lake channels to catch a good pike, which bites well after the ice melts. Common specimens are pike weighing from 3 to 5 kilograms. At this time, pike remain at depth in narrow channels, in channels and ditches, streams, from where they are caught with a spinning rod. In mid-spring, pike fishing stops, but the active period of bream begins.

Pike is a common catch

High activity of bream is observed from mid-April to early May: only two weeks. The best bait during this period is a worm, and fishing is carried out by retrieving. In Arkhangelsk, in the spring they do not feed the fish, but only mark the places of their daily migration. In the spring in the Arkhangelsk region, the water is so muddy that there is no point in camouflaging: the bream will not notice you anyway.

Crucian carp and bream on the feeder

From mid-May, the energetic bite of crucian carp begins, which choose to stay in a school. But the bite can be spontaneous; however, local fishermen note that the May holidays invariably foreshadow a rich catch. The best method for catching crucian carp is using a feeder, but without a feeder. Worms are used as bait on hooks. At the end of May, both bream and crucian carp are caught using this tackle. Because of this, many people come to the lakes and channels, so fishing spots in the Arkhangelsk region must be taken care of in advance.

Lacha is a very large lake, which is located in the Kargopol district, which belongs to the Arkhangelsk region. The area of the water surface is always changing and is in the range of 345–356 square kilometers. But the average depth is small: only 1.5 or 2 meters, although individual pits reach a depth of 5 meters. The following fish live in the lake:

  • crucian carp;
  • Roach;
  • Ide;
  • Perch;
  • Zander;
  • Pike;
  • vendace;
  • Burbot;
  • Whitefish;
  • Bream.

The majority of fish in the lake are bream. When the ice melts from the channels, fishermen postpone until next winter and begin to actively catch pike, the average size of which is up to 5 kilograms. She prefers to stay in streams, ditches and river channels at a depth of 1.5 meters. Fishing is good in channels whose width is in the range of 10–20 meters.

Lake Lacha

By mid-April, only small bee-eaters begin to be caught on spinning rods. Therefore, spinning rods fade into the background, as active fishing for linen begins in Arkhangelsk, the king of which is bream. Local experienced fishermen help track the movement of schools of bream, otherwise the bite will be inconsistent. Fishing for bream in the Arkhangelsk region continues until the beginning of the May days.

From May, crucian carp begin to catch on the hook. If fishing is carried out throughout the day, you can catch up to 4 fish, the weight of which is about two kilograms. When fishing for crucian carp, other types of fish related to leucorrhoea may also be hooked. Sometimes you come across small squirrels, but wouldn’t it be better to release them?

Dolgoye Lake, whose area is almost 45 square kilometers, belongs to the Plesetsk district of the Arkhangelsk region. The waters of this lake are inhabited by all the same fish as on Lake Lacha. Perhaps the only thing missing here is whitefish. Especially a lot of roach live in the thickets of last year's pondweed, the edges, which are located next to the reed edge. There is a large population of bleak in Dolgye Lake, which readily takes bait from the hook after lunch.

When the wind is light, anglers on Long Lake fish using reel gear, making long and extra-long casts. But when the wind blows, the tackle is constantly blown into the thickets, causing the equipment to be lost. But if fishing is carried out with a fly rod, the length of which is about 6 meters, then the casting accuracy increases sharply.

Winter fishing in the region belonging to the Northern Territory can be carried out in Arkhangelsk itself. Fishing within the city on the Northern Dvina is the most affordable option. But here the population of representatives of the ichthyofauna is declining every year. This is the merit of the enterprises that dump dirty waste into the Northern Dvina. While the ichthyofauna has not completely disappeared, you can catch perch and ruffe here, and if you are a professional fisherman, you will certainly catch whitefish and pike.

Winter fishing is successfully carried out in the forest lakes of the Arkhangelsk region: Izhmozero and Smerdye. In the first case, you will need a local guide. In the second case, it will not be needed, since Smerdye is located next to the M8 highway. There are no cold winds here, and the catch can consist of bream, bream, ruff, perch and roach.

Fishing rules in the Arkhangelsk region

  • within the borders of Kargopol, Nyandoma, Konoshsky, Velsky, Ustyansky, Shenkursky, Verkhnetoyemsky, Kotlassky, Krasnoborsky, Vilegodsky, Lensky districts - from April 25 to June 8;
  • within the boundaries of Plesetsk (including within the city of Mirny), Onega, Vinogradovsky, Kholmogorsky, Primorsky (including within the cities of Arkhangelsk, Novodvinsk), Pinezhsky districts - from May 1 to June 14;
  • within the boundaries of Leshukonsky and Mezensky districts - from May 15 to June 28.

During this period, fish form aggregations at spawning sites and make spawning migrations. The use of prohibited nets, seines, drags and other fishing gear leads to significant destruction of breeding fish and a decrease in fish numbers.

Also, the Fishing Rules in the spring-summer period establish a ban on the extraction (catch) of aquatic biological resources for the purposes of industrial production.

For violations of fishing rules, the legislation provides for administrative, civil and criminal liability.
