Behavior of perch in winter

Perch is a common inhabitant of almost all bodies of water. This striped robber hangs out in rivers of various sizes, in lakes, in reservoirs, and even in sea bays with more or less desalinated water. In the warm season, perch prefers to live and hunt alone. But winter dictates its own laws. With the onset of severe cold weather, perches gather in groups, mistakenly called schools.

In fact, perch is not a schooling fish. In real schools of fish there are signs of a hierarchical structure and complex systems of internal communication. Perches gather in groups only because in cold weather there are fewer and fewer areas with a comfortable temperature in the reservoirs. This is the real point of catching perch in winter: by finding a group’s anchorage, you can get a significant catch.

Since fish are poikilothermic (cold-blooded) animals, their behavior follows the general principle: the lower the ambient temperature, the less activity. This process begins to develop in the fall. The metabolism of fish is also affected by the oxygen content in the water. In connection with these circumstances, fishermen distinguish three periods within the winter season: first ice, deep winter and last ice.

First ice: where to look for perch?

First ice is the time of freezing, the very beginning of the season. There is still a lot of dissolved oxygen in the water, the perch is quite alert and actively hunting. It is on the first ice that fishing for huge perches in winter is promising. You can catch an excellent large croaker at this time even in shallow water: the fish willingly scurries close to the shore in search of food. The duration of a good bite when fishing for perch on the first ice depends on the size of the reservoir. On small lakes this pleasure may end in a couple of weeks.
