Non-trivial training: roller skating in winter. Personal experience

Where - and, most importantly, why - to roller skate in winter, Masha Botvinina found out. Actually, I consider myself a pretty advanced roller skater. About three years ago I practically slept in skates. Then the fuse passed a little. But, going to the only place in Moscow where you can go roller skating in winter - Roll Hall on Tulskaya - I hoped that my skills still remained.

In addition, I learned that here, on Tula, is the first School of the Roller Sports Federation in Russia. And here you can not just ride in a circle like a pony (although this process, in general, is pleasant and interesting), but also take personal training with an instructor.

Is an instructor really needed in this matter? Is it so difficult to just pick up and go, even if you are a beginner? And what can he teach you if you are not quite a beginner? And in general, what is it like to roller skate in December, when all normal people skate? These are roughly the questions that occupied me.

And one more thing: - how will I feel walking with a bag of roller skates along the snowy streets? It would probably be funnier only with flippers.

The black and white videos are Seba, and the lonely gray ones are “fitness”. Please note that on the gray ones there is an incomprehensible thing hanging over one wheel - this is a brake. It’s not on professional skates, because there are plenty of ways to stop without it.

By the way, you wouldn’t have to carry the rollers with you. When I negotiated with the instructor Alexander Sukhorukov, he repeated three times that they had a good performance. I didn’t quite believe it and still brought my skates. But, of course, I looked into the rental shop and found that the instructor had not embellished the reality; everything was really not bad here. The skates are from the Seba and Rollerblade brands, which make rollers for professionals and people who are not interested in skating back and forth around the park. But there are also “fitness” classes - they are suitable if you are just going to ride only back and forth.

Even at the box office, newcomers are given protection for their hands, elbows, knees and head. I said that I was an experienced fighter and was not going to fall, and refused to defend myself. But I asked Sasha to show me those same exercises for neophytes. Maybe there's something I don't know?

It turned out, of course, I don’t know. It turned out that Sasha has an inexhaustible supply of ingenious exercises that must be performed on the spot. (And it also turned out that he is not only an instructor, he is also the head of the School and trains other instructors. And he has teaching experience since 2000.)

The first thing he made me do was change my legs, placing them so that the back rested on the front wheel. It turns out that this is how you learn to maintain balance - a very useful skill.

All rollers are very funny, except those who are trying to complete the exercise -)

The most important thing for beginners to understand is that the knees should always be bent and the front of the shin should rest against the “tongue” of the boot. This rule is “Our Father” for roller skaters, and for alpine skiers, and, I suspect, for a number of other athletes.

A good balance workout is to ride on one leg. And then to another. And at the same time remember that you need to ride on the outer edge. And bend your knees again.

Then Sasha made me ride on one leg. And to the other. And the most difficult thing is to answer the question: “why are you going?” "But why? - Sasha asked me. - How? Explain!

I tried to say something about the transfer of the center of gravity, and realized that my theory was at zero. Even for a person who has been skating for a long time, this is a difficult question: the movement is a reflex. And for a beginner, this question, I suspect, is generally something at the level of quantum physics.

But it turns out that in order for a beginner to understand the principles of movement, there is a special exercise - “flashlight”. The point is that the legs first synchronously move apart in different directions, and then move together just as synchronously. In this case, first the movement occurs on the outer edge of the wheels, and then on the inner one. In general, you need to make your legs like a wheel.

I remember riding a horse. I didn’t have such legs there!

I try to repeat it, Sasha assures me that if I imagine that I just got off the horse, it will become clearer to me. I laugh because I literally got off the horse a week ago, and my legs weren’t round on it. Hope -)

The next important point is to learn how to work with your knees. They need to be strongly bent and unbent, thus pushing off. The harder you push off, the faster you go. (And then my dance reflexes let me down. I’ve been learning to dance on straight legs for almost a year, stretching my knee. And then suddenly I have to bend. I sincerely tried, but it didn’t work out very well. It’s kind of like taking a photo when you’re dead tired - it’s like you have to smile , and you think you smiled, and then you look at the photo - and there is an unhappy face.

And finally, basic braking skills. (They always suffered for me. Of course, why use roller brakes when you can hit a pole?!)

Let's figure out how the legs should stand

The first way to stop is T-stop. This is when the back foot is placed perpendicular to the direction of travel and brakes with all 4 wheels. It turned out that in order to slow down like that, you just need to bend your knees! And, so as not to turn around, strain your leg more.

here it is - T-stop. It is not necessary to stretch your arms, but for balance you can

With a little practice everything gets much better, although my right leg is still a little lazy.

The second - and, in my opinion, the most ancient method of braking - is the plow. By the way, its basis is still the same flashlight, only unfinished. You need to spread your legs and start pressing them firmly into the floor, with your toes pointing inward.

Why am I stretching my arms again if the problem is in my legs?

And the most important skill for a beginner is the ability to fall correctly. It is, of course, also included in the basic training program. Falling on your back is the last thing, it’s not far from your head. If you start to fall backwards, you should try to sit down sharply, hugging your knees. So you can, if not completely avoid falling, then at least fall forward, and there you have protection (should be)).

If you fall forward, you need to fall on your hands and do a sharp push-up, you will get shock absorption. Or roll over, putting your shoulder up.

And if the speed of the fall is high, you can try running on your hands. But this is a trick for the pros

Sasha said that, in his experience, a beginner can confidently drive forward, turn and stop after the first lesson. And for students with a good base, there is an opportunity to continue their studies in different areas. For example, slalom - that is, learning to deftly go around cups placed in a line. Or, for example, learn to drive without being afraid of curbs and steps and hearing the enthusiastic “wow!” And even figure roller skating.

In addition, roller sports have a lot of directions, from simple skating in parks to roller derby. This is really cool to try!

I still remember some things from the past

But the main thing in videos is, of course, drive, freedom and speed. And since, apart from the skates themselves, no additional devices are needed, this gives the feeling that you yourself, your own body, generates the speed. You are free to fly around the city wherever you want. And yes, all muscles become toned. Girl, where did you get those...uh...legs? And it’s simple – rollers! In addition, +8 centimeters to height. And yes, of course you can lose weight, lose weight!

And in general, if you could buy emotions in coffee shops, my morning would start something like this: “Double endorphin with adrenaline, please.” In the meantime, they don’t sell such cocktails, you have to make do on your own. For example, ride.

And if you skate all winter at the Roller Hall, then in the summer you can conquer Moscow. I seriously intend to do this. An excellent anti-crisis and antidepressant plan, I think.

We thank the Roller Sports Federation School Roller Scholl, the roller skating rink “Roll Hall” on Tulskaya, the head of the School Alexander Sukhorukov for a wonderful lesson and instructor Ilya Voevodin for taking photographs.

By the way, Roller School holds open free lessons once a week - details here.

Information on prices for admission and equipment rental at the Roll Hall can be found here.
