What kind of fish is found on Seliger
It is difficult to list the entire list of Seliger fish due to the large number of varieties. Real fishermen do not chase what they get, but go fishing with purpose. The most commonly hunted fish species are:
- Bream is a commercial fish species. From mid-summer, closer to autumn, it is more difficult to catch. The bream goes into the depths. For fishing to be successful, you will need a boat.
- Pike, like all predators, feels like the mistress of the lake. On Seliger it can be caught where there are shallows, snags, and coastal thickets.
- On Seliger you can catch perch weighing up to 1.5 kg. Fish live in almost all places of the lake, but for fishing to be successful, you need to choose the right gear and bait.
- Pike perch can be called the king of Seliger. This is what fans of spinning rods come here to fish for. According to reviews from experienced fishermen, pike perch can be caught weighing up to 1 kg, but there are trophies weighing about 8 kg.
- Burbot is found in great abundance on Seliger, but there is a high chance of catching it in winter. Fish loves cold water, which cools down to the required temperature in November or even December.
- The variety of fish includes chub, trout, bream, eels and other fish species. There are a lot of them in the lake, but it is unwise to purposefully go fishing for them. You can catch large numbers of such fish if you get a bite. In other cases, you will periodically come across different varieties.
In photos posted on the Internet by fishermen, Seliger fish lures fishing enthusiasts in summer and winter. Even if you don’t manage to catch the coveted perch or pike perch, you will always be able to catch a variety of fish on your fish.
Fishing only
They have been fishing on Seliger since the 17th century. In those days, each monk who lived in the sacred Nile Wasteland had his own place. The local population also fished next to them. From here, fish were transported to many Russian cities.
Today, fishing on Seliger is still incredibly popular. Seliger attracts fishermen from all over the country with the presence of a huge amount of a wide variety of fish in its waters. The lake is home to more than 30 species of living creatures.
What kind of fish is found in Selinger
There are many fish in Selinger; below we list what you can catch here.
Bream
This is the most numerous species. It can be caught in all local waters. During spawning (from May to June), bream moves closer to the shore, to the shallows, where the water temperature is much warmer. After the end of spawning, the fish moves to the middle of the lake, where they settle in deep holes. Ostashkovsky Reach is especially rich in bream.
Zander
This is the most valuable Seliger fish. An individual weighs about eight hundred grams, and its length is usually 40 cm. But the lucky ones also received eight-kilogram specimens. Pike perch loves clean water and small fish. Its main habitat is the bottom of a reservoir. It only spawns on the surface.
Pike
Pike have chosen coastal shallows and reed thickets. Fish rarely visit deep places. It is caught in the Selizharovsky Reach and in the small river Polonovka.
Perch
There is plenty of perch on Seliger. There are especially many fingerlings - varieties of perch. A large one and a half kilogram specimen can be caught on the rocks.
Acne
Catching the introduced glass eel is not easy. It prefers to hide in the muddy bottom and eat small fish, as well as worms, small frogs, tadpoles, snails and crustaceans. The eel is able to move across wet ground to feast on its beloved peas.
Trout
Trout is found in the Shcheberikha River, as well as in the Ostashkovsky Reach.
Grayling
This fish is a distant relative of salmon. It is distinguished by its variegated color and the presence of a large dorsal fin. Grayling is a daytime fish. She loves snails, tadpoles, eggs and small insects, for which she can jump over the water.
Features of fishing on Selinger
Fishing is of great importance on Seliger.
It is advisable to give preference to feeding areas. Such places are available in paid areas, where fish swim much more often. Here you can get advice on catching any type of fish that lives on Seliger. You can combine comfort and fishing, as well as get a prepared place, at a recreation center with a fishing and hunting bias. The base staff provides vacationers with feeding places on the lake, which is the property of the base. Experienced fishermen can try their luck in this exciting activity on their own. They are able to feed the fish themselves, choose a suitable place and completely devote themselves to their favorite activity. Often visiting fishing enthusiasts choose a place near a town or village. There are a lot of fish there, they are well-fed, but not too large.
When choosing a tourist base, you should find out about the type of fishing that is offered here, since on Seliger each reservoir has its own fish. It is better to come to these places at the end of August or beginning of September. At this time, predators are actively pecking as they begin to prepare for a harsh winter.
The soil on Seliger is unusual and worms are almost never found in it. Therefore, it is necessary to take care of the bait in advance. Local residents earn money by selling worms and other bait, which is very cheap. Advertisements for offering similar products can be found on special signs.
You can fish on Seliger by watching seagulls.
Predators force small fish to rise to the surface, where these voracious birds await them. If an angler is lucky enough to spot a flock of seagulls, he can catch a pike or pike perch in this place. If you are interested in fish on Seliger and want to catch it yourself, go to higina.ru to book a hotel room.
Where to fish on Seliger
The length of Seliger is about 100 km. The system consists of lakes of different sizes connected by channels. On a general scale, there are more than 30 species of fish found here. To find the best places for fishing on Seliger, you need to know which lake is most inhabited by the species of interest.
Most avid fishermen love fishing on Seliger precisely because of the pike perch. Fish are found in all lakes, but most often large concentrations are formed in the Slobodsky, Ostashkovsky and Kravotynsky reaches. Pike perch spends more time in deep depressions where the water is clear. Fish come to the surface while searching for food or spawning. With the onset of hunting, individuals swim into shallow water, but it is very difficult to catch them. Most often, pike perch weighing up to 900 g is caught. The length of such a fish is about 40 cm. A professional considers fishing successful if he catches a trophy pike perch weighing up to 8 kg from Seliger.
The most successful fishing in May on Seliger will bring a good catch of bream. Even in June, the fish swim in shallow water and can be caught from the shore. Bream lives throughout the entire water area of the lake. Fans come across specimens weighing up to 1.5 kg. Professionals associate fishing only with catching trophies weighing about 5 kg. From mid-summer, closer to autumn, you will have to swim in a boat to deep places for bream. Fish settle in holes and gather in schools.
Seliger's perch has several varieties. A youngling is considered a trophy. If you are thinking about organizing fishing on Seliger in 2019, you need to hunt for this perch where there are shallow bodies of water. The fingerling is cunning and difficult to catch. Usually you come across fish weighing up to 1.5 kg. Large perch rubs near the stones.
They don’t purposefully go after eels. It is better to catch it when relaxation and fishing on Seliger are combined into one event. Eels live where there is a lot of silt. Fish are able to move on land and stay out of water for up to 12 hours. Occasionally, night migrations occur. Flocks crawl overland into neighboring bodies of water. Eels are caught at night or early in the morning. For bait they use a worm and small fish.
In the 19th century, Seliger was famous for its large number of grayling. Fish were found in all parts of the lake. After mass fishing, the population decreased. Now only amateurs go fishing for grayling. Individuals weighing up to 1.5 kg are caught using a spinning rod. The habitat is small ponds. Grayling loves pools, places where trees have fallen into the water. The best time for fishing is July and October. At this time, the grayling begins to eat.
Pike can be found in any shallow water of Seliger, but the largest concentrations can be found in the Selizharovsky and Troitsky reaches, as well as the Polonovka River.
Seliger is rich in trout and peled. If you are hunting for this fish, the best fishing place is the Shchebirka River, as well as the Ostashkovsky Reach.

Seliger fish.
For many years, Muscovites have been choosing Lake Seliger as a wonderful place for recreation and fishing, close to Moscow. A large number of fishermen from the Moscow region regularly come to Seliger for periods of two days or more. Fishing on Seliger is popular not only in summer, but also in winter.
In Seliger, in the rivers and lakes associated with it, there are about 30 species of fish. First of all, these are bream, pike perch, pike, perch, roach, bleak, and silver bream. There is a lot of smelt and ruff in Seliger. Less commonly caught are ide, tench, crucian carp, burbot, vendace, verkhovka, and gudgeon. Whitefish, grayling, chub, asp, sabrefish, carp, rudd, lamprey, dace, spined loach, sculpin, and loach are found in single specimens. Occasionally, fish released into the lake are caught: eel and peled. Some lakes are home to catfish. Previously, as scientific sources testify, sterlet rose from the Volga to Seliger. In terms of importance and abundance, bream undoubtedly ranks first in the ichthyofauna of the Valdai lakes. Bream is the main fish of Seliger. In May - June, during spawning, it gathers in fairly large herds and stays in the shallows, in the coastal part, where the water is warmer and there is a lot of vegetation. The main spawning grounds for bream are Vesetsky Reach, Lake Seremo (southern), the southern part of Selizharovsky Reach, Orlov, Dudarnya, Temenskaya, Rudinskaya and some others. After spawning, large bream moves to the middle, disperses into holes and lives there, at depths of 10 m or more. In the bays and coastal areas, at depths of no more than 3-4 m, only juvenile bream live. The areas where bream spawn and juveniles are concentrated have been declared fish reserves and sanctuaries. The Ostashkovsky Reach is the richest in bream. According to the observations of ichthyologists, bream in Seliger lives in several separate herds. One large herd lives mainly in the Ostashkovsky, Kravotynsky and Volokhovshchinsky reaches, the second in the Berezovsky reach, and the third in the Selizharovsky reach. To the north of Polonovka, in the Sosnitsky and Polnovsky reaches, bream was not previously found, but now, judging by the catches, there has also been a separate herd of bream there. Pike perch is the subject of secret and open dreams of every fisherman. The average pike perch found here weighs approximately 0.8 kg and is about 40 cm long. Large ones can weigh up to 8 kg. Pike perch feeds primarily on smelt, as well as perch, ruffe, roach, bleak, and vendace. The main spawning grounds for pike perch are the coast between the villages of Zhar and Peski, sections of the coast on the Kravotynsky Reach, and shallows near Gorodomlya and Klichen. Pike perch is concentrated mainly in the Ostashkovsky and Kravotynsky reaches. It is also found in other reaches and lakes. Lake Sabro is famous for its pike perch. Pike loves coastal areas, shallows, reed thickets and is rarely found in the middle of reaches, at depths. Most of the pike are in the Selizharovsky, Troitsky, Kravotynsky reaches, in the internal Seliger rivers Nepri and Polonovka. Perch is found in significant numbers everywhere. It is interesting that fingerling perch is considered a special species on Seliger. They call him “sharpened”. Large perch caught “on the rocks” weighs up to 1.5 kg. In addition to fish, Seliger was once home to many crayfish. At the end of the last century, about a million of them were caught here every year. However, after the mass death of crayfish at the beginning of this century, they are found only in small lakes.

What to fish with on Seliger
Choosing a fishing spot on Seliger is an important matter, but even the most successful determination of the accumulation of the desired type of fish does not guarantee a 100% catch. To get the desired result, you need to choose the right gear, bait, and groundbait.
It is best to catch pike with a spinning rod. Spinners use a rotating type: “Universal”, “Kemi”, “Baikal” and other similar models. Experienced fishermen recommend Canada spinners. In addition to pike, you can catch other predators with a spinning rod. For example, both pike and perch go well after the Trofimov spinner. However, there is one more trick. Perch like the color red. To catch a predator, bright hairs are attached to the spoon.
Pike are attracted by bait. An excellent bait is finely chopped fish scattered in the water. In addition to spinning, pike can be caught on Seliger using girders. The essence of the method is to place bait on a hook. A pole is stuck into the ground. The girder itself and a small plastic bottle with small bread crumbs are attached to it. The bottom of the bottle is pierced with a nail. From a container swaying in the wind, crackers pour out in portions and float through the water, attracting small fish. When the pike approaches, the fry swim away, and the predator remains with the bait of the pike.
It is good to feed perch, pike perch, burbot, and catfish with worms. They are thrown in large quantities, but first mixed generously with liquid clay. The worms will slowly work their way out of the clumps as they dissolve, attracting larger fish. Burbot is easy to lure with rotten meat. Use spoiled fish or meat as bait
Fishing on Seliger. Fishing methods.
Bream and pike take first place among the fish species living on Seliger, for which fishing is most popular.
Pike fishing
- one of the most favorite pastimes of fishermen on Seliger. When fishing with a spinning spinner, you should use rotating ones: “Baikal”, “uni-versal”, Trofimovsky, “Kemi” and others. The largest catch in July and August, when both pike and perch are caught in one place, is produced by the Trofimov spinner. Good ones are “Kemi”, “Canada” and a spoon with “Baikal” equipment, on the tee of which you need to attach red hairs especially for perch. The predator can clearly see the wide surface of these spinners from afar. This quality of wide spoons is especially valuable when fishing during the “blooming” of water on Seliger, which usually occurs at the end of July or at the beginning of August. It should be noted that on most of the lakes surrounding Seliger there is no “blooming” of water during the summer, and it is best at this time to move from Seliger to the surrounding lakes.
When spinning fishing in September and later, the best results are obtained by rotating spoons of a larger size and elongated shape, such as “Baikal” and “Universalka”. Pike prefers the edges of aquatic vegetation, in small bays. If you find the mouth of any stream, be sure to fish it: small fish are sure to scurry around here, pike are hidden on the edge of the reed thickets, and schools of perch roam in clean places. Pike are found in large numbers in the Selizharovsky, Troitsky, Kravotynsky reaches, as well as on the Nepri and Polonovka rivers. It is no secret that pike prefers two habitat zones on Seliger. The “grass fish” looks for food in the coastal vegetation, while the “reach fish”, which prefers the open spaces of the lake, eats the fish it encounters in the depths.
Features of fishing on Seliger
The peculiarity of fishing on Lake Seliger is that even a beginner can get a good catch. The lake contains almost all common fish species. Experienced fishermen can guide themselves, but for novice fishermen it is best to choose paid recreation centers. Firstly, there are houses for overnight stays. Secondly, experienced instructors work at the Seliger bases. Professionals will help you choose gear and recommend a place.
The advantage of Seliger's paid bases is the availability of feeding places. A person can immediately go fishing. However, there is a huge disadvantage here. Large fish are almost rarely found in well-fed areas.
Experienced amateurs who often fish on Seliger take bait, lures, and bait with them. Worms are in short supply here. They are difficult to even find in the ground. If you do not stock up on worms, you will have to buy them from the local population. Numerous advertisements indicate the sale, but this is again an unnecessary waste.
Fishing Features
When preparing for fishing, you must pay attention to choosing a place. This is due to the fact that not all reservoirs of Seliger can contain the species of fish of interest. For beginners, it is best to go to paid recreation centers. There are excellent fishing conditions there . Instructors are ready to provide all possible assistance in selecting gear. A big advantage of paid recreation centers is the availability of feeding places. Boats with fishermen go there every day. The disadvantage of paid fishing spots is the lack of large specimens.
Experienced fishermen independently select places. They prepare bait to attract more fish. The amount of bait should be limited, since the goal is to lure the fish, and not to feed it. Steamed grain is usually used as bait.
One of the peculiarities of fishing on Seliger is that in these places it is very difficult to find a worm in the soil. This is why they need to stock up in advance. also purchase these baits from local residents . On many houses you can find advertisements for the sale of worms.
It is known that in the reservoirs of Seliger you need to focus on seagulls. Large predatory fish, such as pike perch, actively drive fry to the surface of the water. The seagulls take advantage of this and catch the young themselves. A cluster of seagulls above the surface signals the presence of a large number of fish in the water.
Map of Lake Seliger for fishermen
There are so-called online maps indicating the fishing spots of Seliger. However, they do not provide accurate information. Frequent changes occur in nature. This applies to the weather and the topography of the lake bottom. In addition, schools of fish migrate. Experienced anglers make their own maps while fishing and trust their eyes and research.
If we describe the bottom topography in general terms, then Seliger has an average depth of 5 m. There are large depressions up to 20 m deep. The main bottom sediments consist of silt, sand, and stone.
Fishing on Seliger.
Fishing lovers know well that the Tver region is a blessed land for fisherman. The resort of Seliger includes many large and small lakes; it is not for nothing that this region is called “the land of a thousand lakes.”
The largest lakes are considered to be the cascade of Upper Volga lakes ( Lake Sterzh, Lake Vselug, Lake Peno, Lake Volgo ). The total length of these lakes from the navigable part of the source of the Volga to the Selezharovsky beishlot (dam) is 90-95 km. These lakes are also considered the most stocked with fish . The flowing water of these lakes (this is essentially the spilled Volga), the good ecology of the source of the Volga (not only are there no enterprises here, but there are also no cultivated farmlands and farms left from which fertilizer and sewage could fall into the lakes) and most importantly - The absence of industrial fishing makes it possible for the fish stocks of these lakes to recover well. In addition, the population density (the number of villages along the shores) and the number of vacationers coming here (including fishermen) are much lower than directly on Lake Seliger. Other negative aspects of fishing on Seliger include the presence in Ostashkov of a leather factory and sewage treatment facilities in Ostashkov itself and the stagnant water of the lake (a large number of reaches), which leads to low self-purification of the lake and naturally affects its fish stocks.
Fishing on Seliger and all Upper Volga lakes is FREE! There is only a ban on fishing from a boat during the spring spawning season. As a rule, it is valid here from May 1 and ends on June 10 each year (dates may vary slightly from year to year).

The “KP” expedition “Down the Mother Volga” has begun! Chapter 1
The lake system, which is popularly called “Seliger”, was successfully located halfway between the two capitals and somehow on its own, perhaps without specifically wanting it, turned into a cult tourist place - “at the behest of the pike.” Gradually, “Seliger” acquired a tourist “fat” for every taste. There are simply “guest houses” that were built from clapboards in the city of Borovichi and accommodate tourists. There is, for example, the guest house “At Petrovich’s”, where you can come and really (this is not a metaphor) get really drunk with the owner. And then describe on the guest house’s website the entire epic course of the drinking session - where he fell, how Petrovich fell, and where someone was found in the morning. There are hotels with swimming pools and conference rooms for 140 people, and there are simply camping grounds. Everything is.

In preparation for the start, we chose the Vershina Seliger country hotel; it was conveniently located - just 20 kilometers from the source of the Volga. The first start of our expedition ended in failure - the author of these lines was taken straight from the “Peaks of Seliger” to a Moscow hospital with pneumonia. Therefore, I saw the hotel vaguely, as if through a gray muslin folded four times. But today (almost a month after the unsuccessful attempt to start the journey - Ed.) I examined and saw everything. Birch bark baskets at the exit from the hotel building. The baskets contain mosquito and tick repellents. Halls for tea drinking, where someone’s not greedy hand puts out free boxes of excellent tea, sugar - you can scoop up enough sugar into your hat - and jugs of the purest Seliger water. The hotel huts were built from solid logs. Usually in such buildings there is audibility in the interior, as in the Moscow dormitory named after. monk Berthold Schwartz. But here all the internal walls were made of solid logs. Log houses with “over-cutting” are expensive, but this is an application for a mansion, not a barracks. Latrines corresponded to at least five stars - bidets, shampoos, towels, bathrobes. True, all this pleasure with food was not cheap - four thousand a day, for two people. We were fed in the same cottage restaurant-hut with a dancing veranda over the water.

Fishing
There was no fish on the standard menu. There was a puck of Olivier pressed in the capital’s fashion, two tablespoons in size, and thick pasta with minced meat - pasta. Well, and the purest Seliger water in jugs - as much as you want. They decided to get the fish themselves. At the hotel boat station, Vitya and Egor received a boat, and they had their own spinning rods.

An Asian comrade, who was giving out a fishing certificate to the public, looked tremblingly at Lake Seliger in the calendar middle of the Russian summer and suddenly muttered into the walkie-talkie:
- Vasya, this is Merab, Vasya, please bring the heater, I’m cold.
But the fishermen didn’t care. I admonished them kindly: “Be careful on the water, just now in Chelyabinsk seven people drowned in the same boat...”. They didn’t hear me; with their hands, trembling from fishing greed, they straightened the gear, prepared the cages and landing nets.

For fish
I also went for fish - to a village general store that I noticed along the way. The last hundred meters to the store, like Sidorov’s goat with a twig, I was driven by the sharp rain - the main sign of this summer. Every two hours it rains, so I got there.
On the porch of the store, two local naiads froze in the doorway. Judging by the exterior and the pink and lettuce clutches, out of place in the village, the mischievous rain interrupted their evening promenade. The young ladies looked attentively and predatorily at the visiting Muscovite. They were beautiful in their own way, as the classic wrote, “a dim beauty” that could tear to shreds the heart of an unmarried midshipman-submariner who had just returned from a one-year standby, or a lost geologist. The girls didn’t even think about letting me into the store. With the words: “Lord, strengthen me, forgive me, betrothed!”, I squeezed inside, trying not to touch the soft spots and bulges. And the young ladies remained at the door - they decided to waylay me on the way out. I heard out of the corner of my ear how one said to the other:
— Why does he have a patch with the Russian flag?
- And so as not to forget what country he lives in.
Despite the fact that these speeches were filled with girlish provincial melancholy, which even found its way into the literature of the 19th century, the ladies cackled, and I entered the store. It contained everything from polyethylene to “bastards” with vodka. Because of such abundance of goods, it was difficult for the vision to focus on the fish carcasses, as if covered with gold leaf. The price tag read: “Hot mackerel 300 rubles.” Nearby sat a dirty plastic basket with three fish: “Vobla, Astrakhan - 400 rubles.” There was something symbolic in this - the Astrakhan roach, fast asleep at the source of the great Volga River. But this assortment, despite the deep associations, still caused a scandal. And I turned to the saleswoman with a logical question: “Why is there no fish for sale in the Volna store, located on the shore of Lake Seliger?” The saleswoman answered me in a brilliant kohen:
- For what? Everyone here has fish!
For a well-worn Astrakhan roach in the store they ask for 400 rubles.
Photo: Victor GUSEINOV
I left the general store in terrible thought, like a Muscovite - from a metro car on the roundabout at rush hour. Immersed in kohen, I didn’t notice the girls at the door, and they flew off somewhere to the side.
The eel itself is not local
There were indeed fish in the lake. Vitya and Yegor pulled out five small fish, kissed them according to state custom, and released them into the wild. We did not know what to do with them in an expedition that had not yet started. And then we just went to the city of Ostashkov and bought catfish there. We easily found the “tourist” fish rows, where local and imported delicacies lay in smoked firebrands, piles and logs - catfish, bream, perch... There was also an unknown sea fish, greenling, which is brought here in frozen briquettes.
No matter what anyone says, there are fish here!
Photo: Victor GUSEINOV
“But don’t worry,” the saleswoman told us, “it’s smoked right away, just instantly.” Defrost and smoke.
Tourists are lured with magnets, all sorts of trinkets and the sign “fish”.
Photo: Victor GUSEINOV
We pressed:
- And the eel? Did the eel remain in Seliger?
The saleswoman sighed.
— The fish farms have been closed for a long time, no one is stocking the lake with fish. Seliger eel is only available by order, and it’s not a fact that the men will catch it within a week.
- Whose eel do you have?
On the counter in front of the saleswoman was a styrofoam TV box. It contained neat bundles of eels, looking like a telephone cable cut by vandals before being sold off. The saleswoman explained to us the secrets of craftsmanship:
- Do you see how small this eel is? This is the diameter of a Brunswick sausage. And it should be as thick as a fire hydrant hose. The Seliger eel is real, it is very muscular, but this one is fat, on artificial food, grew in rest….
One of the catfish caught the attention of journalists and ended up among their purchases.

We were never told the country of origin of this fish sausage, but we guessed it. In this country, it seems, they make everything – even “Seliger” eels. Perhaps the state program will solve these problems, and the Seliger eel will not make a living - it will grab swimmers by the legs and capsize small boats. But so far this was far from happening. How do we get to Astrakhan?

Features of fishing on Seliger.
The deep waters of the Volga and the purest lakes of the Upper Volga await both professionals experienced in this type of outdoor activity and beginners who decide to try their luck in fishing during a vacation, weekend, or just relax on Seliger. The most beautiful Russian landscape, exciting and spectacular fishing will bring true, incomparable pleasure to fishing adventure seekers.
Fishing tourism on Seliger continues all year round. During the spring-summer period, any fish can be caught well. Lakes Vselug and Peno, like other lakes in the Upper Volga region, are rich in a wide variety of fish.
free fishing at the source of the Volga fishing on Lake Vselug
Lakes Vselug and Peno are inhabited by bream, pike perch, perch, chub, catfish, rudd, carp, whitefish, grayling, saberfish, dace, and peled. The bait is a traditional worm. Almost all the fish are caught on it. But the trouble is that it is very difficult to get worms in these places, so you need to stock up on them in advance, before going fishing. However, fish such as bream, roach, silver bream, crucian carp, and carp can also be caught using vegetable baits: porridge, steamed grains.
Reasonable bait can contribute to fishing success. Reasonable means that the bait should be in moderation so as not to saturate the fish, but only to lure it to the fishing spot and keep it there. Therefore, you need to add bait in small portions, but periodically, without waiting until the bite stops.
after fishing, fishing on Peno
Vselug is especially famous for its large predators - pike, pike perch, and perch. Fishermen even from towns and villages located on the shores of Lake Peno come here in motor boats to get this fish. The best place to catch a predator is near a rocky island in the middle of the lake. Here they catch it with a spinning rod, or even better - on a track with a long spinner release.
Not only Vselug, but also Lake Peno and other magnificent Tver reservoirs are famous for their wealth. In total, more than thirty species of fish are found here. Pike perch, perch, pike, bream, ide, chub, roach, crucian carp, burbot, smelt, trout, sterlet, grayling, carp, carp, silver carp, catfish, tench become desirable prey at any time of the year.
recreation and fishing on Seliger, fishing from a boat
The fishing “Eldorado” will give everyone the opportunity to choose fishing to their liking - from quiet contemplation of floats in the channel to sniper exercises in casting a spoon, where a precisely splashed bait causes an instant and powerful attack from an asp. And in deep holes you can play tug of war with catfish.
what kind of fish can be caught on Seliger
Pike perch is the most valuable fish of Seliger, the subject of secret and open dreams of every fisherman.
It is called "sharpened". Large perch caught “on the rocks” weighs up to 1.5 kg. In addition to fish, Seliger was once home to many crayfish. At the end of the last century, about a million of them were caught here every year. However, after the mass death of crayfish at the beginning of this century, they are found only in small lakes.
Predatory fish
Perch is the most common fish in the Upper Volga reservoirs. It is found here in almost all lakes and rivers. Large individuals stay solitary, but in general, perch is a schooling fish. Schools of perch constantly migrate in search of food and oxygenated water. Large fish stay near the bottom during migration, while small fish swim closer to the surface.
The color of a perch largely depends on the environment in which it lives. In some forest lakes of the Seliger region with dark water, for example in Cherny, Svyatoy, Dolgy, completely black perches are found. Perches living in clear water, on sandy shallow reaches, for example on Krovotynsky, are light in color, they even lack a dark spot on the first dorsal fin, and transverse stripes on the sides are barely noticeable. I often observed how perches changed their color: a large deep-water perch, almost all dark green, in a cage on the sandy shore takes on a yellowish-scarlet color.
There are two known forms of perch. The small (grass) one, living near the coast, rarely reaches a weight of 100–200 g, and the large (deep) one, living in deeper places, weighs 1.5–2 kg under normal conditions. In Seliger there is another type of perch - the “sharp perch”, which is caught on stones and reaches 1–1.5 kg. The diet of perch depends on its habitat.
On overgrown grassy reaches, perch does not disdain worms and larvae of aquatic insects, such as the mosquito (bloodworm). I have often observed how perches eat the jelly-like eggs of pond snails and toothless snails, as well as frogs. On wide sandy reaches, perch prefers fish.
As a rule, ruffs become its prey. But recently, the population of ruffes in Seliger has greatly decreased due to the deliberate release of large numbers of eels into the lake. Therefore, now the perch has to be content with bleak, roach and other topwaters. Pike perch is a schooling predatory fish, the largest representative of the perch family. It lives on wide windy reaches with a flat sandy or rocky bottom, for example on the Krovotynsky, Ostashkovsky, Polonovsky reaches of Seliger, as well as on the Upper Volga Lake Sterzh and in the Polonovka channel. Lake Sabro is famous for its pike perch. Pike perch prefers clean, oxygen-rich spaces.
Does not like shallow waters or overgrown muddy ponds. It usually lives in holes, cluttered pools with a rocky pebble-sandy bottom, on snags on the slopes of flooded riverbeds and in reservoirs formed by beaver dams. By the end of summer, pike perch swim closer to the shore. The pike perch feeds on small runaway fish (minnow, bleak, ruff, small perch). In rare cases, pike perch reaches 100–130 cm and weighs 30 kg. However, fishermen consider a fish weighing more than 4 kg to be an enviable catch. Pike perch is agile, strong and persistent in the pursuit of prey. I have seen how, in the heat of pursuit of a bleak, the pike perch “flies out” into very shallow places, and sometimes right onto the sandy shore.
In the latter case, after floundering, it usually rolls back into the water, but often instead of water it falls into the hands of a person or, exhausted, falls asleep on the shore. Pike perch is considered a nocturnal predator, a dawn fish, but can also be caught during the day. Only at night and at dawn does he go out to the banks where small change collects and beat it. The sounds of pike perch fighting are characteristic - it is a ringing gurgle; it feels like someone threw a boulder into the water next to you. During the day, the pike perch sits in holes, from where it can occasionally strike. Pike perch is one of the desired prey of the amateur fisherman, firstly, because fishing for pike perch is a highly sporting activity, and, secondly, the meat of this fish is considered a delicacy. Previously, pike perch caught in Seliger was served on the royal table. The eel is a predatory fish of the river eel family and is probably the most unusual fish of Seliger.
It was launched into the lake many years ago and took root there safely. But, naturally, eels do not reproduce in Seliger - this fish spawns in the Atlantic, in the depths of the Sargasso Sea, after which it dies. The emerging larvae, picked up by the Gulf Stream, move along with the warm water mass to the shores of Europe for three long years.
The eel prefers calm waters, but is also found in fast currents. It lives in the lower layers at different depths and on any bottom soil that would provide shelter: a hole, a boulder, a snag, dense thickets of grass. In the sand, eels often dig holes for themselves in which they can hide from enemies, despite the fact that they have no natural enemies within the lake (except for humans).
The eel is capable of crossing large areas of land on grass wet with dew, moving from one body of water to another, thus ending up in closed, closed lakes. He can also make such walks to forage. Residents of the village of Volokhovshchina and fishermen have more than once seen how eels crawled from Seliger through the night dew to the pea fields of Khachin Island. The eel hunts at night, combing the shallow coastal waters, but grabs the bait during the day if it is in close proximity.
It feeds on insect larvae, mollusks, frogs and small fish. Reaches a length of 2 m and a weight of 4 kg. The eel has poor vision and in search of food uses the organs of touch and smell, which are very well developed in it. The eel is a very strong fish, and to catch it you will need not only strength, but also the ability to hook and remove the fish.
The eel’s ability to catch snags and bottom stones with its strong tail is known, so for a novice fisherman the most important thing is to tear the fish off the bottom so that it does not have time to catch, and bring it to the surface as quickly as possible. If the eel still gets caught, then you can say goodbye to the hook - I’ve seen millimeter-long fishing line breaks before my eyes.
Juicy, tender, boneless and pleasant to the taste, eel meat is considered an exquisite delicacy, which, unfortunately, does a disservice to the eel. In Moscow restaurants, the price of a serving of eel reaches 1 thousand rubles. This serves as a huge temptation for the residents of Ostashkov and the surrounding area of Seliger. Currently, there are several underground fishing cooperatives that catch eels with nets of a thousand or more hooks.
Unfortunately, the Ostashkovsky fish factory has practically stopped working due to lack of funding and further stocking of the lake with fish is not carried out. So eels have become rare in Seliger. Pike is a fish from the pike family, one of the most common predatory fish in the Upper Volga region.
It is perhaps easier to name places where it is not present - these are some remote overgrown forest lakes, as well as fast rocky streams. Selects places with weak and moderate currents, sometimes next to a rapid, a small creek behind a cape, or a tree, bush, or stone lying in the water. On large reaches it tries to stay in places where small fish are found. Large pike prefer deep snags, whirlpools, and places below riffles.
Medium and small fish prefer to stay near the edge of thickets of reeds or algae. Pike, especially adult pike, are not very picky about the amount of oxygen dissolved in water. Sometimes it is found in small isolated bodies of water. Most likely, this is due to the fact that waterfowl, such as ducks, flying from place to place in the spring, carry pike eggs stuck to them on their legs and feathers. Pike reaches a length of 1.5 m and a weight of 35 kg. In 1916, a pike weighing 24 kg, 136 cm long and 65.7 cm in girth was caught in Seliger.
The age of the fish was accurately determined by its scales - 33 years. Pike feeds mainly on fish, including even their own fry. Once, when opening a pike measuring 53.5 cm, in its stomach we found a pike 27 cm long, and in its stomach, in turn, there was a pike 17 cm long. In June–July, pikes actively feed in the reeds and coastal thickets, eating , except for fry, frogs and crayfish. By August, schools of fry go to the depths, and pike rushes after them.
A hungry pike can attack waterfowl, water rats, squirrels while they are crossing water bodies... Pike has an excellent sense of smell - I was convinced of this when I fed it with canned saury and sprats (!), which have a sharp oily smell, to the surprise of my neighbors, who believed that pike could not be fed. Pike is an ambush predator and is perfectly camouflaged on the ground. Outwardly, it looks like a smooth log and only a barely noticeable movement of the fins indicates that it is a fish. The pike is very strong and resourceful; when hooked, it tries to swim away in the canopy or under snags. Before my eyes, the pike “drew a figure eight”, i.e. jumped out of the water, flew almost 1.5 m, made a beautiful pirouette, shook her head and disappeared into the waves, leaving me with nothing. Two years ago, one such pike, after an unexpected throw, managed to throw me off the bridge. And a fisherman I knew, an adult strong man, who got confused while fishing, was pulled off the boat by a pike. Burbot is the only representative of the cod family among freshwater fish. In the network of Upper Volga reservoirs, it lives only in Lake Seliger. This is a cold-loving relic fish, preserved from the Ice Age. It is found on deep reaches that are poorly warmed by the sun (Ostashkovsky, Polonovsky, Troitsky). Usually you should look for it near deep holes, under snags, near uneven bottoms. In winter, burbot can be found in fairly deep places with a rocky bottom near the streams flowing into the lake. Sometimes he gets stranded almost at the very shore, where underwater springs flow and where small fish come. Burbots do not have great speed compared to sprinters such as pike, perch, and pike perch. This is explained by the fact that this fish hunts in winter, when its victims are sluggish and inactive, so burbot does not need to chase prey. Burbot hunts at night on the shallows in the coastal zone. Its food is minnows, small roaches and ruffs. It also eats worms, crayfish, and frogs. In summer, burbot leads a sedentary lifestyle, and in hot weather it generally falls into torpor and stays at the bottom of deep holes, pools, under cliffs, snags, in crayfish holes, in places of cold springs, etc. Ruff. This small fish of the perch family got its name from its ability to violently ruffle its fins when it is pulled out of the water. The ruff prefers mainly deep bays, holes, whirlpools, and shaded places. This is a typical bottom fish that does not like light. The usual size of a ruffe is 7–15 cm in length and weighs 20–35 g. Only rare individuals reach a length of 25–30 cm and a weight of 200 g. In isolated lakes, giant ruffes are found, measuring 20–35 cm and weighing 500 g. They feed on worms , mollusks, insect larvae. It eats eggs of previously spawned fish in huge quantities.
Due to its small size and gluttony, it is considered a trash fish and pest. Previously, ruffes lived on Seliger in huge numbers. They were the favorite food of the locals. Because of the locals’ passion for this fish, they were called “ruffy eaters.” An eel released into the lake reduced the ruffe population to a minimum. However, recently their population has been increasing again, probably due to a decrease in eel numbers. Non-predatory fish
Tench is a sedentary fish that stays alone in shaded places among aquatic vegetation - heavily overgrown ponds, oxbow lakes, lakes, creeks, bays and bows. Tench is undemanding to the oxygen content in water and can live where other fish do not live. Survives in frozen waters, plunging into silt.
Tench is a typical bottom-dwelling fish. It leaves its permanent habitat only during floods. It feeds on insect larvae, worms, small mollusks, and the remains of plant food, which it obtains in the bottom silt, sometimes delving into it up to 7–8 cm. The usual dimensions of tench are 30–50 cm in length and weigh 450–600 g. Some individuals reach a weight of 6 kg. Seliger fishermen sometimes come across 8–10 year old tench weighing 1.5–3 kg.
Of all the reaches of Seliger, tench chose the shallow Selizharovsky reach, overgrown with reeds and algae. It is found there most often. In terms of catches in the Upper Volga lakes, tench ranks tenth.
Roach is a schooling fish that lives in all Upper Volga lakes and rivers. Prefers quiet water, slow current. This fish loves warm, quiet water rich in vegetation. Large individuals choose places with greater depth for parking. The roach reaches a length of 45 cm and a weight of 2 kg. Roaches eat worms, insect larvae, mollusks, crustaceans, and various plant organisms. In turn, roach is a desirable prey for many predators.
Rudd is also a schooling fish. Its usual length is 17–20 cm and weighs 100–250 g. Only a few individuals reach 35 cm and weigh 1.5 kg. In Upper Volga reservoirs it is less common than roach. It lives mainly in bays and oxbows of rivers, in flowing ponds and lakes, where reeds, reeds and other aquatic plants grow in abundance. Doesn't like strong currents. It almost always lives at shallow and medium depths.
It feeds mainly on plant foods, algae and aquatic plants, insects and their larvae. Unlike many other fish, in the heat it does not hide in holes and other cool places, but likes to bask in the sun - it swims near the surface of the water. Her ability to feed and get used to a certain place is amazing. Bream, tench, roach and rudd are fish of the carp family. Smelt is a fish of the smelt family of the salmon order, found only in one single place - the Upper Volga Lake Peno. This is a unique fish. Both the fish and Lake Peno were famous throughout Russia. Smelt feeds mainly on plant foods; in rare cases, it eats fish eggs, as well as small benthic organisms. Prefers places with medium currents, loves rocky areas of the bottom, water saturated with oxygen. Fried smelt has an excellent taste.
Winter fishing on the lake
With the onset of frost and the appearance of ice cover (the lakes on Seliger are covered with ice in November - December), ice (winter) fishing begins, which is extremely popular in Russia. The main catch of ice fishing is perch, pike perch, pike, bream, and roach.
You can catch them immediately after the ice freezes, throughout the winter and in the spring. Pike bite more often when the thermometer approaches zero. Various baits are used. It is pleasant to think that pike feed on roach, perch on gudgeon and bleak, burbot on ruff, gudgeon, and perch.
winter fishing on Peno, Tver region winter fishing on Seliger
The places where rivers flow, underwater springs, below riffles, at the edges of pits, and near underwater plants are considered to be productive. Another interesting type of fishing is vertical trolling. Depending on the time of year, you can choose which fish and in what way you will catch.
The articles describe in detail and clearly what is needed for successful fishing, what is bait and bait for fish: bream, carp, crucian carp, etc. Recipes for bait and methods for preparing bait are given, taking into account seasonality; bait in the fall and bait in winter are specified.
Fishing on Seliger: cool season all year round!
Are you going to Seliger? Then we can only envy you! After all, you can catch more than 30 species of fish there, not to mention that trophy fishing on Seliger will not leave anyone indifferent! The Tver region is a blessed land for any fisherman, be it an amateur or an accomplished professional. The impressive system of Seliger lakes provides unique conditions for the life of fish. It is for this reason that there is a chance to compete not just with rare, but also truly large fish.
Just look on the Internet to read hundreds of reviews about fishing on Seliger on local forums. And it was noted that most of them confidently confirm the information from trophies and the abundance of fishing spots.
On Seliger you can try any sports gear and each (without a doubt!) will prove itself to one degree or another, but it will definitely not leave you without a catch. In addition to the main lakes, it is worth paying serious attention to reaches and creeks. After all, it is in these watery “nooks and crannies” that gray-haired lake “monsters” can hide.
Lake District
The main part of Lake Seliger is located in the northwestern part of the Tver region. Its area is 265 sq. km, and the length of the coastline is 500 kilometers. And this is not counting small lakes and tributaries, of which there are incredibly many here. The capital of the lake region is the city of Ostashkov, located on the southern shore of the lake 374 km from Moscow.
In total, Seliger is home to 30 species of fish, including roach, bream, rudd, perch, pike perch and pike. You can find burbot and tench. Autumn is the time to catch predatory fish. Pike perch and pike are found in huge numbers in the waters of Seliger. Therefore, there are enough trophies for everyone.
One of the features of Lake Seliger is the problem of spinning fishing. For the most part, the bottom of the lake is covered with a thick layer of silt, and there are not many places for spinning anglers. However, fishing with wires, “tracks”, as well as trolling give good results.
Pike perch and pike
First of all, in the fall, fishermen go to Seliger for pike. The average weight of this fish here is 4 kg, however, 8-kg specimens are also caught.
It is best to catch pike near the line of aquatic vegetation. Pike can be caught both from the shore and from boats. The water in the lake is very transparent, allowing you to see to a depth of 5 meters. In the coastal thickets you can often spot fish lurking in ambush. In addition, clear water is very helpful for novice fishermen, as they can see the behavior of the bait in the water. Various baits are used for posting, however, on Seliger it is preferable to fish with a wobbler or live bait. It is best to catch pike at the mouths of rivers flowing into the lake.
The pike perch on Seliger is large and strong. You can catch it at any time of the year. However, the best time starts from mid-October until freeze-up. To catch pike perch on Seliger, fishing and trolling are recommended. The tackle is the same as for pike, but the size of the bait should be smaller. Pike perch loves deep places or reaches; the largest Ostashkovsky reach is a good place for those who are going to the lake for the first time. The average weight of pike perch on Seliger is 2.5–4 kg.
Burbot is unsociable
Speaking about autumn fishing, one cannot ignore the most valuable and rare trophy on Seliger - burbot. This relict fish has lived in northern reservoirs since the Ice Age and is caught only in cold and stormy weather. Burbot goes hunting when the water temperature drops below 10 degrees.
For fishing it is better to use live bait. In addition to small fish, a frog, a crayfish shell or neck, or a large worm are suitable. It is believed that the best bait for this fish is small pipe cleaners. They catch burbot at the very bottom using a large hook with a steel leader. The average weight of Seliger burbot is 3–6 kg. If you manage to catch a burbot, but the hook gets caught in the lip, release the fish back into the lake. This is an endangered species, but with careful management there is hope for restoration of the population.
What kind of fish can you catch on Seliger?
If you are a fan of spinning, then do not pass by pike fishing spots on Seliger. Believe me, the toothy predators here are not some kind of “pencils” and “screwnuts”, but truly seasoned representatives of their species.
Connoisseurs of bream fishing will not be able to sit quietly with a fishing rod, because in addition to ordinary bream fishermen, there is a great chance of hooking a real “silver spade” - bream, which will decorate any table or photo report.
Whatever you say, fishing on Seliger in the summer is not complete without catching zealous “sailors”. Perches dart almost everywhere, sometimes even swimming into beach areas, chasing fry. But if you want to catch a respectable “humpback whale”, then you should go for deep overgrown holes and edges.
The carp here are capricious and cautious. But if you take the time and taste preferences of the local “fatties”, your list of trophies will probably be replenished with a new entry.
There is no need to talk about minnows, roaches, bleak and other white “trifles”. Catch it - I don’t want to. But not everyone can catch a catfish. But on Seliger you will have the opportunity to test the “grandfather’s” quok, and even personally get to know the mustachioed giant of the local waters.
Fishing for pike perch on Seliger
Local pike perch grows up to 8 kg, but “barkans” (700–800 gram individuals) are more common in catches. Unlike pike and perch, which constantly move around the reservoir in search of food, pike perch rarely leaves the shelter. Getting a fanged one is a great success.
Indigenous fishermen hunt for it at a certain time - from the end of June to mid-August. They are caught using lures or small fish. But the most productive method of pike perch hunting is considered to be the “path”.

Where to find fishing spots on Seliger?
Seliger is a large chain of lakes connected by narrow and wide channels. We can safely say that you can look for fish in a pond using traditional advice from fishing books. You can find grass pike along the shoreline overgrown with hornwort or water lilies, and bream can be caught in holes and sandy shallows.
If you go out on the water on a boat, it is not at all necessary to have an echo sounder with you. You can also feel the bottom with an ordinary piece of lead on a fishing line. And if you managed to find a shady backwater, covered with thick branches, then even a hedgehog will understand: there is fish here. Moreover, first of all, you should expect a predator. I would like to note that fishing on local lakes is free, which is good news.
Fishing in June becomes especially productive. At the beginning of summer, most of the coastal waters are overgrown with a continuous “carpet” of plants, where fish like to hide. Find or prepare “windows” in it, feed it, and you can count on catching a respectable crucian carp, tench or carp.
Lake Seliger
Seliger is one of the significant lakes in our country, which stretches 66 km from north to south and 37 km from west to east. The average depth of the lake is 5.8 m, the maximum is 24 m.
Lake Seliger was formed about 20 thousand years ago, when ancient river valleys were filled with water from a melting glacier. The first mentions of Seliger are found in chronicles of the 12th–13th centuries. At that time, the lake, more often called Sereger, was part of the Novgorod routes. Translated from Finnish, Seliger is interpreted as “lake on a drag”, “rugged lake”.
Under Peter I, a project was proposed to connect Seliger with the Pola River and Lake Ilmen. Later, under Catherine II, Novgorod Governor-General Ya.E. Sievers was ready to begin its practical implementation - the construction of a canal that would connect Seliger with Ilmen and further with the Baltic. The shape of the lake is very unusual and bizarre.
Seliger consists of 24 reaches and lakes, connected by short straits, intercurrents, and long straits - rivers. Sometimes the same stretch or lake has different names. For example, the Ostashkovsky reach is often also called the Gorodsky or Bolshoi, lakes Seremo and Glubokoe - the Lomsky and Lezhnevsky reaches. A tourist needs to know this in order to navigate the local names.
A characteristic feature of the lake is a scattering of large and small islands. There are 169 of them in total. In the center of the lake is the huge island of Khachin (31 km2). There are also large islands - Gorodomlya, Klichen, Zhuravka, Stolbny, Velikiy and others.
Klichen Island is one of the Seliger islands, located within Ostashkov: a bridge leads to it from Zhitnoye Island, which can be reached by a dam. Klichen is the most comfortable and suitable for tourists. There are trails along the island, fire pits and parking areas.
How to get to Seliger: There are several roads leading to Seliger. There is only one “official” road around Seliger: Ostashkov – camp sites: Svapusche (turn to the Volgoverkhovye), Zaluchye, Sosnitsa. It’s best to pick up after Ostashkov to the left – through Svapusche to Zaluchye. There is a decent road (asphalt), then beyond Zaluchie to the right, then straight through the village, across the bridge (pipe) to the right to the village. Berezovsky Ryadok, and down to the lake. When entering Ostashkov you can buy a map of Seliger from the locals. All “unofficial” roads are also marked along it.

How to catch fish on Lake Seliger?
As for fishing gear, on Seliger a whole “world” for creativity opens up before you. The rich species composition of fish, depths, relief and other nuances will allow you to try out both traditional and special fishing methods.
For example, not every fisherman can boast that he has caught pike using “circles” or “on the track”. No, not by trolling, but on a regular rowing boat, throwing a lure on a fishing line into the water. Such savage fishing on Seliger will certainly bear fruit in your experience.
And if you want modernity, then at your disposal:
- fly fishing and spinning;
- feeder and float;
- summer jig and carp fishing.
And any other amateur sport fishing on Lake Seliger, which will bring you incredible pleasure from both the fishing process and tangible results!
Fishing from a boat
The shores of the lake are, as a rule, inaccessible, densely overgrown with reeds. Having a boat solves this problem. And you can only get to the fishing spots by water.
On Seliger, as elsewhere, fish hide in unusual places. Pike perch and large perch look for high places and underwater rock ridges. Grass pike and bass prefer snags and shallow thickets, bream prefer exits from holes.
Local fishermen most often use side rods. Thanks to its miniature size, this tackle does not restrict the fisherman’s movement. More often they catch bream with it. But if you have a good reel, you can use it to pull in pike, carp, and pike perch.

Pike fishing on Seliger
There are many toothy predators and they can be caught at any time (except for the period of spawning ban). It is customary to distinguish between “reach” pikes and “grass” pikes. The former hunt in the vast expanses of the reservoir, while the latter hunt in coastal thickets. Reach predators are caught using girdles or circles.
Zherlitsy are good for lazy or busy fishermen: just place them in the deep places of the stretch, and then you can go to the bathhouse, barbecue or go on an excursion. Fishing with mugs is more labor-intensive: the mugs are first launched, then collected, the bait is changed and launched again. You have to row over considerable distances.
A spinning rod is indispensable for catching grass weeds. The bait is thrown to the point where the predator is supposed to be, relying on its grasping instinct. It is not necessary to use live bait in this case. The toothy one without hesitation pounces on metal spoons, silicones and poppers.
During the period of blooming water, wide baits are relevant - they are visible to pike from afar. During the autumn feast, rotating lures of elongated shape come to the fore. After freezing, pike are caught for supply.

Fishing on Seliger
7 minutes Author: Konstantin Pavlov 84
Fishing has long ceased to be a profession for most people. Fishermen do not go for fish, but for pleasure, for impressions.
One of the famous fishing places where you can fully satiate yourself with the beauty of nature and have excellent fishing is Seliger. This beautiful name hides a lake located on the territory of the Tver and Novgorod regions of the Russian Federation. Otherwise, Lake Seliger is called Ostashkovsky. The second name is derived directly from the name of the city, which was founded and still exists on the banks of the Seliger River.
Fishing on Seliger is special. And so does the lake itself. This is not an ordinary closed reservoir in the usual sense of fishermen, but a chain of lakes. They are like beads of different sizes strung on a thread, connected to each other by small ducts. Even on geographic maps that are sparse in color, Seliger, stretching for hundreds of kilometers, looks majestic and bizarre: “ragged” shores, dozens of islands, hundreds of rivers and channels flowing into the lake.
Fishing with spinning rod, jig and trolling on Seliger
Spinners fish coastal areas using the following technique: they stop the boat 30 m from the shore, throw the bait to the very edge of the reed beds and guide it towards the lake. Wide spoon spoons work better. Given the huge size of the lake, there are few suitable places for jig fishing. Finding a sandy or rocky bottom without an echo sounder is difficult, and working steps on a thick layer of silt is simply impossible.
Trolling is prohibited in the Tver region. Lovers of trophy fishing are helped out by the good old “track”. 50 m of fishing line with heavy jigs at the end are tied to a short fishing rod.
The baits are bunches of worms or crawlers. The tackle is lowered into the water and slowly rowed with oars.

Tourist bases
Designed directly for comfortable relaxation on a Russian scale. This means entertainment, a steam room, and various organized excursions. There will be no problems with the accommodation of fishermen in such places. But, if the purpose of the trip is fishing, then you must be prepared for it. Know inside and out the fishing spots of Seliger, the types of fish that live in its waters, be aware of the baits, lures and baits used in each specific area of the large Lake Seliger.
Popular tourist centers of Seliger
There are a lot of recreation centers on Seliger. You can find something for every taste and budget. Some of the popular bases are: “Hig”, “Fishing Village”, “Chaika”.
Recreation center "Higina" on the shore of Khatin Bor Bay. A huge all-inclusive complex. Accommodation ranges from budget rooms to detached cottages.
The lowest prices are in winter.
The base “Fishing Village” is a base in a pine forest on the shore of Lake Vselug. Sandy beaches, green lawns and rustic-style houses. Everything is simple and sincere.
The Chaika base is the closest base to the capital that can be found on Seliger. There are both summer houses and comfortable cottages on the territory. There is rental of watercraft and sports equipment for cycling.
Economy class bases include such complexes as Orlinka and Baranovo. Here the price per night starts from 700 rubles. Slightly higher prices at middle-class bases. For example, “Greenstone”, “Borovoye”, “Verkhnevolzhye”.
VIP apartments can be rented at the Palace Hotel. This is a large hotel complex on the lake. Before major reconstruction, this building was the estate of the Tolstoys, landowners from the Tver region. Here prices for single rooms start from 3 thousand (out of season), but the service is appropriate.
Fishing bases
Specialized bases specifically for fishermen. The service includes not only houses, food and other benefits of civilization, but also exactly what the fishermen need. There are fishing guides here who can not only tell you everything in theory about fishing spots on Seliger, but are also able to organize a practical trip.
Usually, these are professional fishermen, equipped and equipped with gear according to the latest “fashion” of the fishing world. They are pleasant to look at, and even more pleasant to listen to.
Often, internal trade in fishing goods necessary directly for local fishing is organized here. Each body of water has its own “tricks”, this is no secret to anyone. So be prepared to shell out some cash, you will definitely want to have something new in your fishing collection. And you will also have to pay for the experience that the guide will share. But the knowledge and experience gained will pay for your expenses a hundredfold.
