Lake Sartlan, Novosibirsk region
Lake Sartlan in the Novosibirsk region belongs to the category of endorheic lakes of the Barabinsk group.
This is a relatively shallow body of water with an average depth of 2-3 meters. Due to the peculiarities of the food supply, the diversity of bottom and coastal vegetation, the waters are rich in fish. Lake Sartlan with an average water surface area of 238 km 2 is the third largest reservoir in the Novosibirsk region. Until the beginning of the 19th century, it was part of the huge Lake Chany, whose area in those years reached tens of thousands of square kilometers (today - about 1500 km 2). Therefore, reservoirs are largely similar in physical, chemical and biological characteristics.
Among the Baraba lakes, Sartlan is one of the deepest. The average water thickness is about 2.5-3.5 meters depending on the season, exceeding 6 meters in some areas. The shape of the water mirror is oval, slightly elongated from northeast to southwest, the greatest length is 25.5 km, width is 16 km. Due to the fact that the banks are low and the slope is gentle, large areas are overgrown with reeds and other water-coastal vegetation. The bottom is muddy and there is a lot of algae in the thickness.
The surrounding area has been inhabited since time immemorial. In recent centuries, the Bashkirs and related peoples lived here. The very name of Lake Sartlan, according to linguists, is derived from the Bashkir word “surtan”, which translates as “pike”. You couldn’t give a more precise name to a body of water – there are a lot of toothy predators in the water area.

Hydrology
Lake Sartlan is an endorheic, flat, slightly brackish reservoir. The composition of water belongs to the sodium bicarbonate-chloride-sulfate group. The influx of moisture is mainly due to snow melting. Several streams and rivers flow in, the largest of which is the river. Karapuz. During periods of particularly heavy flood, the bowl overflows and the Saraika River flows out of the lake.
Unfortunately, most local reservoirs are prone to fish kills due to their shallow depths in winter. Sartlan, being deeper, has become a pleasant exception, so the ichthyofauna here is richer. Ice cover is established by the end of October, reaching a thickness of 1.2 m at the peak of frost. Breakup begins in April and continues until mid-May.
Interesting from a scientific point of view is the unstable water regime, subject to long-term cycles of watering. There are intra-annual cycles with a periodicity of 2-22 years, and intra-century cycles with a duration of 30-50 years. The following parameters depend on these factors:
- mineralization;
- surface area;
- depth;
- change in species and numbers of hydrobionts.
The minimum water level was recorded in 1969 (109.63 m above sea level), the maximum was observed in 1947 (110.86 m above sea level).
Weather and natural features of Lake Sartlan
The weather on Sartlan is determined by the sharply continental climate of the Baraba steppe, in the center of which the lake is located. There are cold winters and hot, dry summers. The reservoir is freed from ice at the end of April and freezes at the end of October. In the hot months, the air warms up to +25°C, and the water off the coast reaches +24°C. From May to October, extreme heat is possible, when the air warms up to +35–37°C, and in the winter months temperatures drop to -45°C.
The water level in a reservoir tends to change every few years. The total mineralization of lake water and the surface area depend on this. The banks are flat, gently sloping under the water, the bottom is muddy, viscous, and in some places there is sand near the shore. The coastline is partly open, partly overgrown with reeds. Access dirt roads become difficult to navigate only in the off-season and after prolonged rains.

Fish farming
In the Novosibirsk region, Lake Sartlan is considered one of the most productive. It is no coincidence that since the 1970s, regular work has been carried out to stock it with valuable commercial species. In the vicinity of the village of Krasny Yar there is a fishing complex connected to the lake by a canal. During the Soviet Union, fishing was carried out on an industrial scale. Today, due to a decrease in catch volumes, limited stocking and economic difficulties, there is a decrease in the average size of fish and the dominance of unproductive species.
The main fishing targets are induced carp and representatives of the local ichthyofauna:
- silver crucian carp;
- bream;
- roach;
- pike;
- perch;
- ide.
In 1971-1977, nelma was transported from the Ob River basin to Lake Sartlan for commercial cultivation.

How to get there
The easiest way to get there is by car. Driving from Novosibirsk, Kuzbass or Omsk is necessary along the Baikal highway to the Barabinsk interchange. Then the path lies south in the direction of Taskaevo to the village of Krasny Yar. On average, the distance from Omsk will be 390 km, from Kemerovo 630 km, from the regional capital – 395 km. There are two roads leading to the western and eastern parts of the lake. They are connected by a dirt road running along the southern shore of Sartlan.
You can stay in the settlements of Malyshevo, Petropavlovsky, Alekseevka, Karmakla. The best places for fishing are located near the village of Krasny Yar, at the mouth of the Karapuz River. There is a recreation center, fishing and hunting lodges, a tent camp and other tourist facilities on the lake.
How to get there
From Novosibirsk, take the P-254 highway to the junction in the Barabinsk area and turn left onto the P-381 road in the direction of the regional center of Zdvinsk. After 44 km, you should turn left from the highway in the direction of Karmakla and drive about another 8 km to the coast. The journey takes about 5 hours, the length of the route from Novosibirsk is 364 km. Fishermen from Omsk get to Sartlan by leaving the city along the Syropyatsky tract in the direction of Novosibirsk and travel 335 km along the P-254 highway to the same junction in Barabinsk and further to Karmakla.
It is possible to get to Lake Sartlan by public transport. You can get to Barabinsk station by rail from both the west and the east; many Siberian trains stop here.
From Barabinsk you can take local buses departing from the city bus station in the direction of Barabinsk-Zdvinsk or Barabinsk-Taskaevo to the lake. The bus station is located right next to the railway station at st. Puteynaya, 18.

Fishing on Sartlan
It is already the fifth year that residents of the Novosibirsk region are excited by rumors about the mysterious and terrible “Sartlan disease”. The disease got its name from one of the lakes in the Baraba forest-steppe - Sartlan, where the fish were infected with a toxin unknown to science. Cats who tasted it fell dead. And in people, doctors found tight bundles of dead muscle fibers in their muscles. When the disease is severe, a person simply becomes numb from unexpected piercing pain, begins to choke and dies in terrible agony from an unbearable painful shock.
. Until recently, several surviving collective fish farms fed around Sartlan. The gifts of the lake were dispersed throughout the region and even flowed beyond its borders through barter. Fish was readily exchanged for coal, fuel, timber, and spare parts.
Like a bolt from the blue, a strict ban on fishing for carp and ide in Sartlan struck. And the scary phrase “Sartlan disease” appeared in local newspapers. The first victims were the fishermen themselves. The disease appeared suddenly. Even in the morning the man was absolutely healthy, he worked all day on the lake with other fishermen. Well, I'm a little cold. Well, in the evening I ate some fresh fish from Sartlan - and... at best, he remained crippled for the rest of his life. In severely ill patients, for some unknown reason, the muscles of the whole body tensed convulsively and literally tore into pieces, and the person fell apart, like a barrel whose hoops had burst. More often, however, the insidious disease was limited to causing a few stinging “punctures” in the muscles and just as suddenly disappearing.
Doctors honestly admitted: no one knows how to treat the “Sartlan disease.” Only one thing is clear: this is not an infection - germs and viruses have nothing to do with it. Then maybe poisoning? Yes, some mysterious toxin was found in the affected fish, which presumably causes the disease. But they could not identify the poison, and the disease itself was very unusual. It doesn't look like banal poisoning at all.
But there is nothing new under the sun, and the “Sartlan disease” turned out to have quite a rich backstory. Even with the name of the disease, Novosibirsk residents seemed to have clearly gotten excited. The name was given “offhand” - after the name of the native lake Sartlan, and more, so to speak, for internal use, but it threatens to develop into an official one. But with the same success the disease could be christened after the name of any other lake, where outbreaks of a similar disease were noted at different times. There are several such damned places in the country: in the Leningrad region - Lake Yuksovskoye, in the Kurgan region - Lake Itkul, in Altai - Lake Ostrovnoye, not counting the Novosibirsk lakes Sartlan and Ubinskoye.

For a long time, scientists have been trying to find the original source of the disease. That is, the carrier of that same mysterious toxin, which, gradually accumulating in fish, in one unlucky hour provokes another outbreak of an incurable disease. The culprit, in particular, is the genus of perennial aquatic and marsh plants of the Umbelliferae family - poisonous hemlock or vekh. The poisonous weed often poisons cows and sheep that wander into swamps and lakes. Among the suspects are other semi-aquatic plants, as well as rare acids. According to another version, the disease is not caused by any one acid, but by a complex mixture of several fatty acids. Individually they are not very dangerous. But in some proportion - fatal! - the mixture becomes a terrible poison.

There is evidence that no toxins were found in fish. Several small rivers flow into the lake (including the Karapuz River), and during periods of high levels (in spring) the Saraika River flows out. The maximum recorded water temperature in summer is 28.7 °C.
ICHTHYOFAUNA There is a lot of fish in Sartlan, the reservoir is considered highly productive. The lake is home to crucian carp, perch, carp, peled, roach, ide, pike, dace and other fish species. The lake is regularly stocked with fish, and commercial farming of carp and peled is carried out there. The carp has acclimatized in the lake, but natural spawning is ineffective, and the population is maintained mainly by juveniles produced in the fish hatchery. Good afternoon! After Sartlan we decided to visit the lake. Chans. The main focus was, of course, on relaxation. No overnight stay. After all, we have two children with us from 0 to almost 3 years old. But we still have the fisherman’s belongings with us and the porridge is cooked) Not early in the morning on the spot. It looks like the sun, but the wind just knocks you off your feet. It's stormy. Only in the evening did they decide to inflate the boat and go out to sea. We stood by the reeds with fishing rods and our son and fed him (not our son☺️). Basically, within the first two minutes we realized that on such a wave it was pointless, to my deep regret (The situation was saved by an ultra light kit purchased the day before the vacation. We decided to update a new method of fishing for ourselves. The first cast of edible rubber is there! O_o First Okushok. And off we went! It pecked on almost every cast. We were in shock. We tugged lightly, and the wind was already just rocking our boat, it was getting cold, even though it wasn’t 6 p.m. yet. We moved ashore, got the kids dressed. - Lake Sartlan gave its name to the little-studied Sartlan disease (other names are Yuksovsky disease, Gaffian disease).
