From the history of the creation of the museum
In 1999, Navy veterans turned to the mayor of Moscow with a request to create a memorial military-historical complex. The appeal was approved and in 2003, submarine B-396 , was moored for eternal mooring in the waters of the Khimki Reservoir . The boat opened to the public in 2006.
In 2007, the exhibition was supplemented with unique exhibits: the transport-landing ekranoplane "Orlyonok" and the air-cushion landing-assault boat "SKAT" . Since February 2010, everyone can try themselves as ekranoplan pilots using a virtual pilot simulator.
What else can you see
On the territory of the museum complex of the history of the Navy, in addition to the submarine, you can visit several other interesting exhibits.
In 2007, the Orlyonok ekranoplan was installed on the territory of the complex - a special type of aircraft that, using the effect of the so-called aerodynamic screen, moves above the water surface at a height of half a meter. It is capable of flying at a speed of 400 km per hour not only over water, but also over tundra, ice - any relatively flat surface. Inside the ekranoplan, all instruments and mechanisms, seats and steering wheels of the pilots are preserved. In principle, he is able to fly even now. For those who want to try themselves as its pilot or passenger, there is a special computer stand simulator.
Also in 2007, the museum’s exposition was replenished with the combat landing hovercraft Skat. It is available for external inspection.
Submarine
DPL B-396 was laid down in 1979 in the city of Nizhny Novgorod on stocks. From 1980 to 1998, the boat was on combat duty in the Northern Fleet, in the Mediterranean Sea, along the western coast of Africa, and patrolled the northern state borders in the waters of the Barents and Norwegian Seas. Decommissioned in 1998, she was converted into a museum and in August 2003 made her final voyage from Severodvinsk to Moscow.
The museum boat includes seven compartments:
Torpedo
This is where visitors enter through the entrance hatch. An observation deck is equipped along the starboard side of the compartment, from which it is convenient to study the presented weapons, systems and torpedo launch control devices. A rescue wetsuit for submariners to escape through torpedo compartments in case of emergency is also demonstrated here.
Residential
Consists of two decks. On the bottom is the commander’s cabin, on the bulkhead of which there is a memorial plaque listing the stages of the submarine’s combat service. At the top there is a demonstration hall for educational and lecture work.
Central control station
Navigation, hydroacoustic and radar combat posts are located here. Some of the equipment has been preserved and is in working condition. The periscope is fixed in a raised position, so anyone can look into it. From the compartment, a vertical ladder leads to the navigation bridge and the upper deck of the superstructure.
Residential
Today this is the location of an exhibition dedicated to the history of the creation of diesel submarines and a detailed model of Project 641B.
Diesel
In this compartment you can look at a real diesel engine, control panel and systems that ensure its operation.
Electromotor
There is a special cutout in the deck for inspection of the electric motor.
Aft, residential
In addition to sleeping places for the crew, there is an aft hatch for the crew's emergency exit to the surface.
For the convenience of visitors, the doors and bulkheads of the conning towers and living quarters are made of transparent plastic, and the transitions between the compartments are widened. You can carefully examine the furnishings of the wardroom, galley, isolation ward, commander's, doctor's and officers' quarters.
There is an opportunity to call the ship's bell, sit in the navigator's place, and touch the most interesting exhibits with your hands. Additional lighting makes it easier to inspect hard-to-reach places where the engines and control mechanisms of the underwater ship are located.
90 meters long , is installed on a special underwater base, this made it possible to raise it by four meters and open the steering screw complex for inspection.
The submarine had a number of defensive guns. People interested in military equipment can go to the Museum of the Armed Forces in Moscow. There you will see not only a lot of weapons and equipment from different eras, but also learn many historical facts that will inspire you.
What instruments of torture and execution were used by people at different times. You can learn this from this article.
Exhibits
During the tour, visitors are allowed to explore and touch almost all of the exhibits. Feel like a sailor and sit in the navigator's chair, jump into the hatch in a second and ring the ship's bell. You will learn about the difficult life of submariners, what responsibilities and rules they have, which you should never deviate from. To make it more convenient for excursionists to enter and move around the boat, some hatches were replaced with the usual entrances and exits.
Note: people with disabilities can also board the submarine. The boat is divided into compartments, each of which performs a specific function, for a total of seven compartments.
The compartment where visitors immediately find themselves is called the torpedo room. You will be greeted by all kinds of devices, sensors, mechanisms, instruments, buttons, measuring devices. Wetsuits are also stored in this compartment in case of an emergency.
The second compartment is residential or, as it is also called, battery compartment. Has two decks. The commander's cabin is located at the bottom. On the walls there is information about what service the submarine served and where it served. The other deck is designed for meetings and lectures with the team, has a modern look and is equipped with audio and video equipment.
The third compartment houses the central control center. There are also two decks here. Combat posts, radar and sonar tubes are located on one deck. On the other deck there is a lot of different equipment and sensors, most of which are in working order. Well, what would a submarine be without a periscope? It is also here and you can look at it.
The fourth compartment has the same name as the second. On one of the decks there is a museum about the history of the development of diesel submarines. The central place is occupied by a model of the submarine 641B in a profile section.
In the fifth diesel compartment, look at the heart of the submarine - the diesel engine. Control systems, without which the boat will not work, are also located here. An electric motor is located in the sixth electric motor compartment. There is a hole above it with a fence for safety.
The seventh compartment is residential and aft. There are sleeping places and a standard hatch for emergency exit. In living quarters, for the convenience of guests, the doors are made transparent, and the passages between the compartments are expanded.
For an external understanding of the submarine, it was placed on a four-meter base, which made it possible to further examine the propeller-steering complex.
After finishing the excursion you understand how much courage you need to have to serve on a submarine. This is very hard work, both mentally and physically. People do not see their relatives for months and cannot contact them in any way on the high seas. They risk their lives every day, every hour.
After viewing the submarine, you can buy souvenirs in the souvenir shop: books and souvenirs related to maritime themes.
Landing assault boat "SKAT"
Appeared in service with the Navy since 1970 . To improve streamlining, the pilothouse is half recessed into the boat's hull. Five hinged doors are designed for landing Marines. “SKAT” can only be viewed from the outside, from the embankment of the memorial complex.
...and other interesting exhibits
At the Submarine Museum in Moscow you can also visit and see the following:
- The Skat assault boat has been in service with the Navy since 1970. Unfortunately, you cannot go inside it.
- Ekranoplan (combination of aircraft and ship) "Eaglet". Can move over any surface, move on land and water. The maximum speed is 400 km/h, the route range is 1500 km. Although you can only look at the Eaglet from the outside, in the museum you can easily fly it in a virtual flight simulator.
- Educational for schoolchildren - during a 45-minute program, children can learn a choice of: about various countries and cities, space and the Earth as its particle, the world of nuclear energy, St. Petersburg - the sea capital of the country.
The ekranoplan "Eaglet" and its virtual piloting
The ekranoplan is a unique symbiosis of an airplane and a ship. It can not only fly over any surface: water, ice, tundra, but also move over land, ensuring landings. Its flight range is 1500 kilometers and its speed is 400 km/h . Currently, the ekranoplan can only be viewed from the outside while walking along the embankment of the museum complex.
Opened in 2010, the virtual piloting simulator gives every visitor the opportunity to test themselves as the commander of this unique aircraft.
The simulator is designed in the form of a combat ekranoplane cockpit. Designed for virtual training of combat missions. The visitor can pilot in both automatic and manual mode. The simulator allows you to practice takeoff, landing and control in night and unusual weather conditions.
The stand can simultaneously accommodate 14 people: two in the pilot seats, the rest as passengers. The capabilities of panoramic 3D visualization , surround sound and control system simulators allow you to create the impression of a real presence on board the ekranoplan.
Educational
In 2011, a civil-patriotic educational center was opened on the basis of the virtual piloting stand. Here, using 3D visualization technology, famous historical battles, countries and cities of the world are recreated on panoramic screens, and star maps are studied. The following educational programs are conducted for schoolchildren:
- Traveling across cities, countries and continents;
- History of space exploration;
- Earth is one of the planets in the solar system;
- St. Petersburg is the sea capital of Russia;
- Journey into the mysterious world of atomic energy.
Each program lasts 45 minutes and is conducted in Russian and English. At the end of the program, the acquired knowledge is tested in the form of testing on personal monitors. The center can accommodate 24 people .
If you feel the spirit of an unshakable sailor within yourself, then you can go to the Titanic Museum in Moscow. Of course, you won’t be able to go on an ocean voyage, but you will fully feel like an honorary passenger of the legendary liner. After all, the exhibition was recreated as close as possible to the reality of that time.
This is not the whole spectrum, where, through emulation, you can travel in time.
