Khovrinskaya Hospital: legends of Moscow's unfinished construction

For several decades now, residents and guests of the northern outskirts of Moscow have been oppressed by the mere appearance of an abandoned building that looks like a gigantic ghost ship - the Khovrinskaya Hospital (KhZB). Its notoriety makes people avoid it, and some, on the contrary, are attracted by its gloom, mystery and terrible legends. What epithets did the Khovrinskaya abandoned hospital know, photos of which make the blood run cold. It is called Umbrella by analogy with the gloomy closed corporation from the movie “Resident Evil”, Unfinished Construction, Nemostor, Khovrinka. The walls of this hospital have seen murders, suicides, dark romance, stalker parties, and, of course, more than a dozen drug addicts and alcohol lovers. And it all started with the grandiose plans of the Soviet authorities.

History of Khovrinskaya Hospital

Construction of the future hospital began in 1980, but was suspended 5 years later when the necessary equipment began to be imported.

For 7 years it was planned to resume it, but since then they have not returned to it. The project was completely frozen 12 years after the start of implementation.

The main reason for the termination of construction was considered to be the lack of proper financing, but later it became known that the fault was due to an unsuitable site.

The area where the KhZB was built is swampy and in the last stages of construction, the building began to gradually flood and collapse due to the negative factors of soil influence.

Over the next 33 years, the building gradually deteriorated, becoming dangerous for regular visitors, and in 2021 a decision was made to demolish it, which was fully implemented at the end of the year.

At the moment, work is underway to prepare the territory for the construction of a modern microdistrict.

There was nothing left of Umbrella except photographs.

Mystic

The hospital building was erected on an old abandoned cemetery. This fact gives this place even more mystery and wildness. And the number of beds for which the hospital was supposed to be designed was 1300. The first two digits of the number also make you think - a damn dozen... of course, some may consider all this to be superstition, but if this were so, this hospital would be considered a place where Evil is reborn, and would all these stories exist?

Deaths in the Khovrinsky abandoned hospital

The HZB was accessible to everyone even when it was guarded, so for several decades fatal accidents regularly occurred on the territory of the huge unfinished building.

The history of Umbrella is famous not only for suicides, but also for deliberate murders. In 1990, a murdered girl was found on its premises.

After 15 years, a man was discovered who also lost his life against his own will.

Teenagers committed suicide several times in the vast abandoned area. Some jumped into the elevator shaft, some used the roof.

In addition to fatalities, Khovrinka is famous for accidents resulting in injuries and injuries.

Most often this happened to schoolchildren and stalkers who were looking for thrills among the collapsing buildings.

Dangers

Sagging concrete, protruding rusty reinforcement, collapsing walls, darkness, heights, open elevator shafts - all this poses both physical and psychological danger to people trapped inside. Of course, many still want to go to the hospital. Fans of arthouse photography, individuals who like such a oppressive atmosphere, fans of mysticism.

This building has become so popular that in mid-2015 it is planned to begin filming a documentary film based on real events, the title of which is “Khovrino”. The plot, naturally, is about the hospital and everything that happened and continues to happen in it. Many are looking forward to this film - who knows, what if we manage to learn something new?

Legends and stories about the abandoned hospital in Khovrino

There are many rumors and legends about the Khovrinsk Hospital; the huge abandoned buildings simply cannot help but attract attention with their eerie atmosphere. Until recently, Khorvinka was one of the main Moscow places where people went for thrills.

One of the reasons for the notoriety of CZD is its shape. From a bird's eye view, the buildings strongly resemble the logo of Umbrella, the corporation that started the zombie apocalypse in the famous film series. For this reason, its most popular unofficial name was born - Umbrella.

There are rumors that the Khovrinsky hospital began to be built on the site of an old cemetery and a church with a miraculous icon that once existed here. This is where all the stories of ghosts and spirits roaming the area and causing harm to all visitors came from.

The second popular tale was the presence of a secret crematorium and morgue in the second building, which are supposedly under the protection of the military. But numerous stalkers themselves dispelled this rumor, personally convinced of its implausibility.

But there are terrible stories that really happened. During perestroika, a satanic cult was located in abandoned basements, actively performing sacrifices.

At first, animals suffered from his actions, and subsequently mentally unbalanced adherents began to kill people. The police were unable to immediately stop the series of brutal ritual murders.

The sectarians returned several times until they managed to detain all the followers. During this time, many people disappeared.

Many ghost stories stem from teenagers hanging out in Umbrella. Children often intimidated new visitors by pretending to be evil spirits.

There is also a good legend concerning Khorvinka. On city forums you can find many stories about how those lost in numerous labyrinths of abandoned buildings were led to the exit by a kind ghost - Raf.

The spectacle is not for the faint of heart

The Khovrinsk hospital claimed many lives. The legends about her are numerous, and many are not fiction at all, but real stories. If you want to get inside, then first you should think carefully: is it necessary at all? And first make sure that your nerves are strong. Dead animals, bones, skulls, garbage, red spots - all this is to be seen. By the way, there really are a lot of dead dogs inside. There are even several stories about this.

One of them says that in a house located not far from the clinic, there lived a little old woman who had a dog. One day, an elderly woman lost her and decided to go to the hospital to look for her. She found her in one room. More precisely, these were the remains of an unfortunate animal. Someone tied his paws with a rope, and several more of these poor fellows lay nearby. The grandmother went to the police and showed them evidence in the form of severed and bound dog paws. They tried to organize a raid, but nothing worked, and the operation, which lasted several days, did not bring any results. Therefore, the old woman decided to track down the rapists on her own. And she died. As you might guess, the circumstances were very vague and suspicious - she fell into a trap, broke her legs and slowly died over the course of several days, unable to call for help.

Khovrinskaya abandoned hospital in culture

The abandoned buildings attracted the attention of not only extreme sports enthusiasts, but also cultural figures.

Umbrella became the main setting of the film “Khovrino. Blog from the Underworld,” and the book “Kremlin 2222. Khovrino.”

In addition to them, she is also mentioned in some other science fiction works by domestic authors.

Everywhere it appears in a negative light, being a place of concentration of evil forces.

Modern Umbrella

Where the Khovrinskaya hospital is located is never empty. This place is haunted and ghostly, filled with the screams and cries of children and strange sounds occasionally coming from the depths of the rooms at night. Whether this is true or not - only those people who have seen and heard it with their own eyes know. However, there are so many mysteries about this place and so many inexplicable phenomena happened here that you can believe what is said.

Umbrella also has “permanent residents.” These are, of course, homeless people. There are a lot of them. And they live there together with Raf. This is the god of Umbrella. There is not enough information about this character, but it did not appear out of nowhere. Raf guards Umbrella, and he is there all the time. It happened that he saved people who fell into traps or got into trouble. However, then he disappeared until an indefinite period.

Khovrinskaya Hospital is a place where the most unusual personalities flock, so to speak. These are skins, emo, goths, punks... In general, representatives of a wide variety of subcultures. They managed to drive out the Satanists, but these people came to replace them. But there are also normal “visitors” there. For example, in the hospital they train emergency response dogs.

Plans Fail

How many times they tried to demolish this unfinished complex - nothing worked. The hospital seems to be alive - as if it doesn’t want to be demolished. In 2009, the complex was transferred to the ownership of the capital. At the same time, they drew up a regulation on the demolition of existing buildings and structures, but suddenly an investor appeared who promised to deal with this building and exchanged it for a new plot of land. But then this man mysteriously disappeared. Three years later, in 2012, a new regulation was made on the demolition of this building, however, this plan did not come true - a few months later the building was put up for auction, setting its price at 1,800,000,000 rubles. This is too cosmic an amount for such a structure.

In 2014, the capital's deputy mayor for construction assured that this building would be sold in 2015 so that it could be demolished and a new hospital built. In March of this year, this issue was considered again. Well, who knows how events will develop further. But for now, the building where Evil itself is reborn stands in its place.

Abandoned hospitals in Moscow

In addition to Khorvinka, there are several other abandoned hospitals in Moscow, which extreme lovers love no less.

In a fairly crowded place in the capital there is a former clinic - a two-story building with a high accident rate. The building is boarded up and it is extremely dangerous to be inside due to the destroyed roof and cave-ins into the basement.

Of great interest to stalkers is the hidden burnt laboratory, which can be accessed through two of the five entrances. The facility does not have any security, so getting inside is quite easy.

Inside you can find old reagents, abandoned respirators, and a lot of broken glass. Most of the items were taken away by looters long ago.

Another abandoned medical facility in Moscow is the unfinished psychiatric hospital in Pechatniki. The building has only two floors; according to the stalkers, there is nothing interesting inside. The object is not guarded.

Medical sobering station No. 1 also has only 2 floors and is one of the abandoned institutions. Now its premises are actively used by people who do not have a place to live, who several years ago tripled the fire here, thereby increasing the accident rate of the building.

Medical and sanitary unit No. 21 was listed among the abandoned medical units for 10 years. Institutions, but recently they began to reconstruct it to continue operation.

7 years ago, a tuberculosis clinic consisting of three buildings was abandoned. Getting here is quite difficult because of the security guard who does his job efficiently. Recently information appeared about the possible start of reconstruction.

The Metrostroy clinic, although abandoned, is also under constant surveillance. Moreover, the building is equipped with an alarm system. Getting here is quite problematic.

The hospital in Kuntsevo is also guarded, but not well enough; it is quite possible to enter its territory. According to the stalkers, many of the rooms are empty inside, many doors are closed. There is no emergency status.

The medical unit is another interesting abandoned place, as it was closed only 5 years ago. Until recently, it was quite easy to get into its territory, but now all the entrances are closed. There is security.

The hospital and the medical clinic were abandoned several years ago, but are still under guard. You can enter the territory through holes in the fence; the building itself is in good condition.

The maternity hospital has been abandoned for 6 years and consists of four floors. In some rooms, furniture, medical equipment, and documentation have been preserved.

The children's psychoneurological clinic was closed four years ago, but is still under protection. All furniture and equipment were taken out.

The Basmanny hospital is in great demand among stalkers, as it has a large territory, many of which contain furniture, equipment and reagents. There is no security.

Basmannaya Hospital

The Olginka Hospital is one of the oldest abandoned buildings; the building was built in the century before last; at the moment its condition is very poor, so climbing inside is highly not recommended. The object is under security.

Olginka Hospital

There are many abandoned buildings of various hospitals scattered throughout the capital, which were supposed to undergo restoration, which never happened.

All of them have free access, as there is no security at all.

Interesting Facts

It is worth noting that in the place where the Khovrinskaya abandoned hospital is now located, a stream used to flow. More precisely, there was the Likhoborka River and a fairly extensive wetland. In addition, there were treatment facilities for the boarding house, which was located next to this territory. Well, even with such general data about the past of this place, we can say with confidence that the geological situation is absolutely not suitable for construction. For example, in 2014 it was discovered that the first floor of this building had practically “gone” underground.

Australian madhouse

Another insane asylum is located in Australia. The history of the mental hospital, like most others, is associated with mysticism.

People who visited Beechworth spoke of disappearances and murders without a trace. A laboratory was later discovered containing patient body parts in glass jars. They were intended for various kinds of experiments. In 1950 there was a fire, after which all the banks disappeared without a trace. In total, about 9,000 patients died within the walls of the hospital.

So we got to know a little about some abandoned mental hospitals around the world.

This is not the entire list of scary clinics on Earth. All of them seem creepy to us for one simple reason - there were mentally ill individuals here, and some of them are still haunted by their ghosts. It is not advisable to visit such places, but it is unlikely that anyone will stop in pursuit of unforgettable adventures.

Architecture

Top view of the building, 2021
The layout of the eleven-story building is original and different from similar buildings of the Soviet period. The hospital is made in the form of a three-rayed star with branches at the ends. The three wings of the building converge in the middle, the side parts form three courtyards occupied by extensions[7].

The hospital, designed for 1,300 beds, is designed in two buildings with a three-level roof, connected by a wide corridor, which is now flooded. The hospital is designed in the brutalist style, which is characterized by massiveness, the use of reinforced concrete and rough shapes[5]. Next to the main building is the building of the pathology department[22]. Due to the incompleteness of construction, fragments of walls and interfloor ceilings are missing in some places. The basements of the building are flooded[23].

Deadly virus

From above, the building is shaped like a triangular cross with branches and resembles an international biohazard sign. There was nothing mystical or frightening about it until the film “Resident Evil” became a cult classic. The fact is that a similar symbol appears in the film with Milla Jovovich and the computer game of the same name (it’s called Umbrella). Today, fans of the legendary film saga like to exaggerate and say that the building was actually built to carry out secret development of a terrible virus that could destroy humanity. They are silent about the medical personnel who turned into zombies in the cult horror film. Are you afraid to prophesy?
