This forecast is based on an assessment of the state of the ichthyofauna depending on changes in meteorological quantities and the influence of the phases of the moon. The bite forecast is available on many fishing sites, some easier, some more difficult, but in most cases users are offered a certain result of “dancing with a tambourine.” In order to form unambiguously correct dependences of the bite of a particular type of fish in a particular region (and take responsibility for predicting the bite of a particular type of fish) with reference to the calendar, it is necessary to collect and process enormous amounts of data. In this case, it is necessary to take into account both natural factors (spawning time, weather anomalies) and human intervention (water level regulation, warm runoff, discharge of chemicals, etc.). It is safe to say that no one has detailed statistics and collecting them is useless, because... Such data quickly becomes outdated and loses relevance. It is known that in the same region the biting situation can change dramatically within just a couple of years (with the exception of places that are difficult for humans to reach).

Near the city (30 km) lies Lake Sauskanovskoye (Sumkinskoye). This is one of the largest oxbows of the Irtysh. The most popular places among spinners are in the area of the village of Yurty Irtyshak and under the far shore. In some years, the best catches are at the far end of the lake towards the village of Maslovo.
The shores of the lake are gentle, but mostly shallow and dirty. There are not always good places for fishing from the shore. Depends on the level. You can search. In front of Sumkino and in Sabanaki there are convenient places to launch a boat.
Of the Tobolsk lakes, Sauskanovskoye is the most popular.

This means that the situation with oxygen in the Irtysh is normal. But decent chebak and perch are rare in winter catches here. Of the large fish in the middle of winter, only ide bites. But pike, which is usually plentiful in the river, is found very rarely in winter in some years, almost by accident. And the reason for its low activity is clearly not oxygen. But in the semi-abandoned, vast but shallow Lake Svetloe, located 50 km from Tobolsk, pike bite perfectly on the girdle.
Another example: Wolf Lake - an oxbow lake of the Irtysh - is both large and deep, there is little algae, they have never heard of death there. And recently there are cages with trout there, an aerator is working, and in winter too. That is, everything is fine with oxygen. But after the first ice bite, even there comes the deadliest time, the usual catch is only a few perches. And 100 km west of Volkov, among peat bogs, lies Lake Shchuchye - also large, but shallow. You can only get there by winter road. There's a bite every now and then, but quite often the chebak bites like a machine gun; Perch also bite. It may be small, but you can pull out a hundred tails in a short winter day. In general, not everything is so simple with deaf winter. It is generally accepted that at this time you need to tune in to hunting for small fish and meager catches. Although it is in the deep winter that excellent catches of quite trophy fish occur.
And here it should be noted that in the middle of winter on such reservoirs, theory differs little from practice. The bite actually almost stops. And here, in Western Siberia, too. But now, new, modern gear has become available to fishermen, citizens have much more cars than in the days of 30-40 years ago. In recent years, many Siberians have acquired snowmobiles, on which they use winter roads, guided by navigators, to get to lakes where fishermen rarely set foot and only on ice - in warm weather getting there is extremely problematic. And then it turned out that the fishing was still successful, and crucian carp was caught from the ice very well, and the weather was not so critical for the bite. In the middle of winter, on a remote swamp lake, half-kilogram perches grab the bait as if they had rolled down a hungry mountain. Why don't fish bite in winter? Because she is cold, stuffy and dark. A joke immediately comes to mind. A woman from the balcony shouts to a child in the yard: “Vovochka, go home!” - Mom, do I want to eat?! - No, you're cold!
We are accustomed to looking for direct cause-and-effect relationships. It `s naturally. But nature is somewhat more complicated. However, enough of the swinging idols and stones in someone else’s garden. It's time to offer something of your own. Factors and facts Since we ended the first chapter with an anecdote, it is logical to start the second with a joke: “See the gopher? And I don't see. And he is." Gophers, steppe herbivorous animals, will help you understand what is happening under the ice in winter. As you know, they hibernate in winter. Not because it’s cold, but because the main issue for their population is food. And since they feed on grass, which does not grow in winter, it is more profitable for gophers to sleep in winter.
Moreover, in more southern regions, somewhere in the semi-deserts of southern Central Asia, gophers also sleep in the summer. Not because it’s stuffy in the semi-desert in summer, but because there’s no grass. And they adapted maximum activity and reproduction to the period when the semi-desert blossoms and is filled with lush grasses. “What does perch have to do with it?” - the impatient fisherman will ask. And despite the fact that in winter the fish bite weakly, primarily for the simple reason that it benefits from a decrease in activity. I don’t take into account small ponds, where there are really big problems with oxygen in winter, and after the ice forms, the fish go to the springs or tributaries in the hope of winning a place with more or less fresh water and surviving there until spring. Even in an oxygen-rich lake, there is little food for most fish in winter. The amount of plankton and benthos decreases sharply. Those who feed on them reduce their activity.
It is also worth noting the lack of major underwater life events that would stimulate activity. There is no spawning, no insects emerging. It is more profitable for fish to save energy. Pisces are like gophers in a hungry steppe, waiting out harsh times. In a large lake, even where there are starvation, perch and chebak cannot fall into complete stupor. After all, oxygen starvation develops quickly, but not everywhere. Death is a rather complex phenomenon... And then the chebak will have to leave some part of the lake, move to another layer of water, to tributaries, to the source, to a neighboring lake. Therefore, he cannot lie down in a hole for the whole winter - otherwise he will have nothing to breathe. The fish senses the onset of pestilence and, if possible, leaves such rivers or reservoirs. In the lower reaches of the Tobol River, death is a common occurrence; fish enter the Irtysh en masse. But most lake fish don't go far or stay at all. Often they have to leave the reservoir in confined spaces under the ice.
At the beginning of the death, the pike still continues to peck, so it stands still and feeds on sluggish, still moving chebaks and perches. It happens that the perch bite in the lake has become very sluggish, has almost disappeared, but the pike continues to bite on live bait. But the under-ice life of river burbot is full of events. Spawning is important! And this is a move and a meal before, a meal after. Burbot, it seems, does not wait for its prey, sitting in ambush, but searches for it, sneaks up and attacks. And lethargic winter fish are quite suitable for such a popular hunt. Burbot hunting is the exception that proves the rule. Burbot hunts half-asleep fish, which are in this state not at all from a lack of oxygen. After all, when the roach runs out of oxygen, the burbot will freeze with its belly up to the ice - it is much more demanding of it.
Why do fish still bite? The fact that perch and chebak remain somewhat active in lakes does not mean that they will bite. Apparently, when by the middle of winter there is little oxygen at the bottom or the bloodworms go too deep, peaceful fish almost cease to be interested in food - it becomes so scarce that there is no point in chasing miserable crumbs. But it seems that the fish brain somehow monitors the level of competition. And if it is high, then the fish increases feeding activity. This does not mean that in a lake rich in fish it will grab everything all year round, but the likelihood of a bite increases. And in some lakes among the swamps, which are accessible only in the deepest winter months and where the fishing pressure is small, in the middle and second half of winter the chebak and perch bite just fine. A striking example is Lake Shchuchye. Only 30 km from Tobolsk.
Now about lake pike. In most lakes it is at the top of the food pyramid. Although pike food reduces activity, unlike bloodworms, it does not burrow into the mud. Even crucian carp do not burrow into the mud as often as is commonly thought. In semi-abandoned lakes, fishermen with perches are forced to maintain some activity in order to avoid problem areas. In addition, a lack of oxygen can drive fines from under the shore itself and concentrate them in open spaces in the water column. Therefore, pike, although not very vigorously, still bite in many lakes until the start of death, even if the number of predators in this reservoir is very moderate. Such feeding activity makes sense - hunting justifies itself.
The fact that overkill phenomena can work to improve the bite, for fishermen who grew up on the repeatedly repeated postulates of the Soviet “deaf winter theory”, sounds, of course, wild. But practice proves that pike are more active in those reservoirs where the threat of death keeps its victims in good shape. But in a river like the Irtysh, the picture is different. There are no kills, the burbot is energetic and enterprising, he is the master of the winter river. So, perhaps the low activity of river pike is a way to avoid hopeless competition with the single barbel. The main thing is where, in most well-drained reservoirs, the dead winter occurs regardless of the oxygen regime, so it makes sense to turn your attention to fish reservoirs. Let’s leave aside all the small outlandish lakes, all outlandish and semi-outlandish rivers - everything is clear with them, the fish there either buried themselves in the springs, or, if possible, went to spend the winter in a large, oxygen-rich river. Well, or died en masse.
Large lakes and rivers that are not frozen, according to the Soviet “dead winter theory,” are the most promising bodies of water, and all thanks to a good oxygen regime. In fact, only a very few of them, mostly hard-to-reach ones, have a good bite all winter long. In our region - Western Siberia - there are very few lakes that are not frozen. All of them are located near large rivers, the surroundings of which, including floodplains, are well-developed lands, and the mentioned lakes are very well fished, so there is nothing to do there in the dead of winter. But on the taiga rivers, which do not suffer from death, there is excellent fishing in winter, and not only perch and pike, but also large ide can bite furiously.
You just need to take into account that the river systems in Western Siberia are huge, and fish actively move along them, so it can be difficult to find a collection site. But it is possible. For example, in the small river Aremzyanka, which flows 35 km from Tobolsk , in the 2012/13 season, a lot of chebak and perch came from the Irtysh for the winter, and the fish settled in a well-accessible area. The bite was great, although not all the time. If we talk about poorly fished reservoirs, then in our country these are primarily semi-abandoned lakes scattered among huge swamps. According to the Soviet “deaf winter theory”, in the middle - second half of winter, the bite there is at a minimum. In practice, the most successful ice fishing took place there.
Swamp lakes are a special world. On the one hand, they are very stable: they do not dry out, they are not flooded by large rivers, the species composition there is very poor, and the living conditions are quite harsh. And the behavior of even perches and chebaks in such lakes is reminiscent of the fastidiousness of crucian carp in a pond. In one winter, in many of these lakes over a large area, the fish bite well throughout the entire season, while in another winter, under similar conditions, it is very sluggish. Moreover, according to the echo sounder data, there are large fish there and there are a lot of them, but the bites are sporadic. Causes? Maybe the autumn rains affected the chemical composition of the water, maybe some crustacean bred in one year and did not breed in another, maybe a lot of fry went into winter or vice versa.
In general, information from the field is very important for fishing on semi-abandoned lakes. And here many make a serious mistake - they go to where the fish were biting last year. And it’s better to start the new fishing season, especially for chebak and perch, with a clean slate. It should be noted that there are noticeably more lakes where perch bite than those where in winter . In many reservoirs, the roach living there simply ignores the bait. The main gear for fishing for chebak and perch is a jig with a nozzle, and there are often more bites for a worm than for a bloodworm. At times, the perch takes well on spoons and balancers. But in general there are many blank spots in this topic - hard-to-reach reservoirs, as well as the behavior of the fish there, have so far been poorly studied.
Pike are more predictable. This can be easily explained by the fact that its food supply is more stable. The number of small perch and chebak is not subject to such fluctuations as, for example, fry. I won’t categorically say that my explanation is correct, but that’s how it seems to me. Lake pike is characterized by a fairly high feeding activity even with its low numbers. This means that it is caught well. The main gear is a zherlitsa. The most catchy places in semi-marine lakes are the edges of reed thickets and the middle of the lake. The winter lure itself is a well-known tackle. There is a lot of literature, including both masterpieces and articles that do not deserve special attention.
I’ll leave technical issues aside - long hikes also require moral preparation. And it happens: we covered 300 km in two cars, then 50 km on snowmobiles in frosty -20°C. We arrived at the legendary lake, from where no one had ever returned without a bag of one-kilogram perch, and rummaged around with an echo sounder: the fish stood in an almost continuous layer. And between four of us we caught seven tails in a whole day. And here, of course, self-control, a philosophical attitude and love of life are required. And sometimes, a fish will go to grab the bait, and the fisherman will need self-control in order to stop in time, stretch his legs, warm his hands, and remember that the catch is the most important part of the process, but only part... of the process of communicating with nature.
